Distributors: Please use the above description.
Type MENU to read the documentation.
All the main documentation is in the various CHAPTER*.COM
files. These display a chapter screen-by-screen or
topic-by-topic when run. The displayed screens include
non-standard characters that can confuse printers and the
DOS "TYPE" command, so you will not be able to print extracts
or use a text browser in the conventional way.
The programs CHAPTER*.COM and WBTSMENU.COM are sub-programs
of MENU.BAT and are not intended to be run independently.
If you attempt to run them they will only display a help
message and then terminate.
WBTSR.COM is the TSR program itself. Genrally it is
inadvisable to type the name of a TSR program merely to see
what will happen. You will probably end up with an unwanted
installed facility that you can only get rid of by switching
the computer off. In the case of World Best TSR you are
safe, because it won't install unless you invoke it with the
right parameters.
To obtain a 1-page summary of operating essentials, print the
file TIPS.PRN.
File VENDOR contains information for distributors.
File LEGAL contains legal notices which are to be applied as
is if they were written here in full.
Files GO.BAT RUN.BAT and READ.ME, if present, duplicate each other.
They serve only to provide an informative starting point in case you
receive this software on an unlabelled diskette.
Make sure that your current directory contains all the files listed
in file PACKING.LST.
To read the main documentation, type MENU at the prompt.
Changes since version 1.0
------------- Version 1.43 enhancements --------------
1. The following features omitted from version 1.3 are reintroducted:
Caps Lock Bell (now <Lock> bell - extended to Scroll lock & Num Lock).
Instant Screen Blanker - now just beeps if you are in 43/50 line mode.
15 minute Screen Dimmer - now deactivated in 43/50 line mode.
2. The dialogue box fault that prevented replication of certain files has
been fixed. Text entry now works much better. If the entry field fills
up with text, a "beep" warning is now given, and the editing mode
reverts from "Insert" to "Overwrite".
3. Files RUN.BAT GO.BAT and WBTSR.DOC added. These files provide a
brief description and 2 familiar starting commands for users who
have received an unsolicited and possibly unlabelled copy.
RUN.BAT & GO.BAT as issued by the author are identical, but your
distributor may substitute other files of the same name.
4. Improved method of guessing whether a file contains text or data.
All runs of the same repeated character are assumed to be text.
Line wrap mode is turned ON if any line on the first screen is
longer than 256 characters.
5. New ON/OFF feature to make the F11/F12 keys work with all programs.
Occupies the same menu slot as "Print local $" so both features
cannot be used at once. Registered users can choose. For unregistered
users, the active feature depends on what country you are in.
--------------------- Erratum -----------------------
The printer features have always affected all the parallel ports,
not just LPT1 (as stated by older documentation).
------------- Version 1.3 enhancements --------------
1. Text search pattern can now include TAB,SPACE and most control characters.
2. When searching for text in a tagged group, the tags of files in which
the pattern was not found are demoted to "+".
3. Disk operations on machines with only one diskette drive are now safely
handled (provided you have DOS 3.2 or later).
4. The One finger typing feature now works when composing characters using
Alt+numeric pad.
5. Alternative hot keys.
6. Registered users can preset the ON/OFF options at installation time.
7. Pops up on 43 & 50 line screens, ocuupying the top 25 lines only.
8. Pitch of the key click is recalibrated each time the hot key is
pressed and so now sounds the same regardless of machine speed.
9. Compatible with Windows 3.1 .
There is more on this topic in the notes issued to registered users.
10. When appropriate at installation time, version 1.3 displays:
"WBTSR: Warning! Release Scroll Lock Key!"
11. MS-DOS 5 users can install the TSR with the LOADHIGH command.
When loaded high the TSR occupies no conventional memory at all.
12. Directory displays are sorted twice, using the last two selected
sort methods in turn. This ensures that you can leave and re-enter
a directory without disturbing its sort order.
13. Registered users can preset the default sort order at installation.
14. Registered users can choose either bright or normal screen intensity,
and upper or lower case filenames in directories.
15. In countries where the DOS currency symbol is '$' the "Print local $"
feature is replaced by a new "Copy sets 'A'" option.
---------- Version 1.3 missing features ------------
Existing users will find that 3 features of ealier versions are missing.
Omitted features did not work perfectly on PC/AT compatibles.
The problem was simple, but the cure is not.
Missing features will reappear in version 2 .
---------- Version 1.3 bug fixes ------------
1. You can no longer tag or attempt to delete the ".." directory.
2. Esc from "Alter file date" now correctly redraws the screen.
3. If you pop back into the previous view and create a directory,
you now get the directory you want.
4. "Esc" while locating text in marked files now exits from the search,
not from the entire program.
6. The partial display of a very large directory is now correct even after
deleting some files. Display no longer fills up with garbage.
7. Message "Unable to show entire diectory" did not always appear.
Now always shown when appropriate.
8. Correct statistics are now shown after entering a named directory.
9. When you deleted a subdirectory,
the "files in this directory" statistic would be reduced by 1.
Now correctly reduces the "subdirs in this directory" statistic by 1.
10. No longer reports "disk absent or door open" if you pop up the TSR when
there is no diskette in the default drive. The indefinite identity of
the current directory is safely handled.
11. The key combination Ctrl + Caps Lock was not ignored by earlier
versions. On XT keyboards this could cause the sense of the Caps Lock
warning light to become reversed.
12. The pitch of the key click was proportional to machine speed, and was
inaudible on very fast & very slow machines. The TSR now recalculates
the correct click pitch each time the hot key is pressed. This enables
correct pitch to be maintained even when machine speed is changed by
operation of a "turbo" switch.
13. The rename, copy, move, replicate & delete functions failed to detect
that a disk was empty, and attempted to manipulate an imaginary file.
Empty disk is now detected.
