1 LIST CHANGES WITH EDITION 105
There are several format changes starting with this edition of
the list:
The list now uses the "R" designation for RBBS and all sections
will be filled out. If I do not know a piece of information, I
will substitute a "?". As usual, this will apply to NEW and
UPDATED entries only.
The following modem information is displayed for new and updated
boards. The field is in columns 50-53 in the following format:
mMxx
m = Minimum speed
M = Maximum speed
0 = 300
1 = 1200
2 = 2400
9 = 9600 and greater
xx = Modulation type(s):
V = V.32 or V.32bis
U = USRobotics HST
D = USRobotics Dual Standard (V32 and HST)
H = Hayes VSM
B = Hayes Ultra (V32 and VSM)
O = Other proprietary method
These modulation indicators appear for those boards supporting
9600 baud or greater maximum rates. As additional modulation
types are added, I will consider them for their own letters.
These features appear to be the most important for a caller to
determine if they can connect with a board. Higher baud rate
claims (e.g. greater than 9600) depend so much on manufacturer,
modulation, and settings of both the calling modem and BBS modem
that 9600 will continue to be the maximum entry.
The entry supports two modulation types so boards which support
different types on multiple lines can indicate this.
NOTE: Several BBS sysops appear to not be able to read when
entering this information in the questionnaires. They seem to
want to enter 9600+ baud as their MINIMUM baud rate. In some
cases, this may be true, but in most, I doubt it! I have left
those entries as they are.
2 SOFTWARE DESIGNATION CHANGES?
It looks like it's time to consider some changes to the Software
designations on the list. As you can see from the table below,
some of the software with its own designation just isn't as
popular as it once was. New BBS software is also coming on the
market and becoming more popular.
[Note: these numbers are from an interim version of edition 105,
if you try this count with the 105 release version, it will
undoubtedly be different. Please don't worry about correcting
these counts, it's the relative numbers which are important.]

I'm interested in knowing what you feel are the popular BBS
software which do not currently have their own designations. I
will be changing some myself over the next couple of months. If
you have an opinion, please leave a comment on BOBsBBS
(916-929-7511).
BBS Software Authors and other interested parties, please note:
You are the most likely to contact me if your software is not
listed separately. Please indicate the numbers of boards
CURRENTLY ON THE LIST which support your software. It is best if
you can give me a list of these boards by copying their entries
in the list. Thanks for your cooperation.
3 The ANNOTATED USBBS?
When sysops enter information for consideration for USBBS, they
are asked additional information about their board which does not
appear on the single line USBBS list. What would you think of a
SEPARATE list which contains additional lines with this
information?
The list would be larger and would be maintained the same as
USBBS. That is, it would follow the same rules for qualification
and the information would not be verified. However, it would
contain two/three additional lines for each board containing
focus and feature comments from the lister. It would be
delivered in a separate archive file on the same schedule as
USBBS.
At the current time, sysops wishing to be included in such a list
would have to contact BOBsBBS *ONLY* and leave their new/updated
information. The list would be started from scratch and would
contain only new/updated BBS information. As a side note, this
might also serve to get more current information on many boards.
The body of the listing would look like this:
916-929-7511 CA Sacramento Bob Breedlove X 29V 26+BOBsBBS, USBBS 2/1
FOCUS: Communications, Business, Programming for MS-DOS
Home of USBBS National BBS List, BOBsLIST. Communications,
utility, business, programming files for MS-DOS
Note that the first line is the same as that in USBBS. As usual, I
will make no particular effort to verify any of this information.
I want your comments on this. If I don't here from enough of you, I
will NOT produce this list. Please leave comments on BOBsBBS
916-929-7511. Thanks for your continued support of USBBS.
4 UPDATE SCHEDULE
USBBS is updated from entries submitted by callers throughout the
month. Only updates made to an official update point through the
indicated method can be assured to make the list if the board
qualifies.
The final update to USBBS is made on the last weekend of the
month before the edition month unless the first is on a weekend.
The list is usually available Sunday morning. I distribute it
personally to the distribution points sometime on the day it is
available.
In special circumstances, I may have to distribute the list at
other times either earlier or later than the schedule. I try to
leave notice at the download points when such times occur.
5 FILES
The following files are included in the USBBSxxx.ZIP archive:
USBBSxxx.LST The list itself.
USBBSxxx.TXT Distribution and Update points for the USBBS
list.
Eventually, there will be 4-5 update points --
one in each geographic part of the country. The
distribution points for the list are boards that
I personally upload the list to shortly after it
is updated.
This file will be included with each edition of
the list.
USBBSxxx.NWS You're looking at this file. It will be included
periodically as there is information to pass on
about the list.
