Turkey considers everything south of the Alps to be within the Turkish
sphere of influence. If you have any designs on Sevastopol or Rumania
you can forget them right now. Cooperation on certain, how you say,
'other matters'? is a distinct possibility, however. One of those
matters would be the Italians moving A Rom-Ven ...

To: Russia
Well, I pretty much have all my moves figured out except for A Tri.
That unit is at your disposal; it's most obvious use would be to
assist you into Vienna. Unfortunately that would, as I've pointed
out, leave both Rumania and Sevastopol vulnerable (*AND* if you
tried to defend both Warsaw would fall this year rather than next).
What would you like me to do?
Sultan Abdul Hamid
P.S. - Order the Italians to move A Rom-Ven.

Only if you enjoy jousting with ghosts. Do you really think that the
Germans will take a defensive posture in Galicia? I think he will try
for either Sevastopol or Rumania; afterall, he has shown the procliv-
ity for daring strikes. But even if he doesn't voluntarily vacate
Galicia, even if you did manage to dislodge him, he would still
retreat to Rumania. I assume you don't want the Germans in Galicia,
and I have made it quite clear to him that I would consider such a
move an act of war (against Turkey) ...
A Tri can either: 1) Support A Bud-Ven, 2) Support A Bud, or 3) Sup-
port A Bud-Rum. Anything else in S'05, and A Tri will act on its own ...

Indeed it is. But if it is declared to be over (as oppossed to being
won), then whoever has the most supply centers will be the winner.
That means a desperate race for centers among the remaining players.

The 'race' may mean that for Germany, but for Turkey it means taking
out the Austrians and finishing the conquest of Italy. (I've had all
I can of Italy's schizophrenic moves).

To: Moderator
My moves are based on the belief that the game will not last beyond
this game year: Austria has quit, and France appears to have done the
same. In Austria's case, it is understandable, if not forgivable. In
France's case, it is neither - he was the most powerful country on the
board before he went into civil disorder. I hate quitters - they rob
the deserving of their just rewards and punishments (as the case might
be). If, as I believe, the game does end this game year, I don't want
to be stuck in a supply center tie with Germany. Thus, I am throwing
all caution to the wind in a desperate grab for victory.

That's what I was trying to explain to you before the builds/disbandments.
I also suspect that he will move A Mun-Boh in preparation either for an
attack on Warsaw or on Vienna. The latter would get him a quick supply
center, but the former would keep his forces concentrated. If you wish to
stay in Budapest, do so. I could move F Ank-Bla so that you would have
assistance to retake either Sevastopol or Rumania ...

Not only has he not been on Exec in four days, he has not read this
message area in at least ten days (I know because I left him a
receipted "check" message just like I left everyone else).

Certainly those messages weren't mine. I still don't like it when
people quit (as you read in the analysis of my moves), but at least
you had the courtesy to let us know - which is more than can be said
for several other people ...

I have to disagree with you there. While the games are much quicker,
and you don't have to worry about things like system crashes and
people losing interest, conducting diplomacy is nearly impossible.
Secrecy is the very nature of diplomacy and secrecy in a face-to-face
game is an oxymoron. Think about it: If you were to go off in a corner
with me, wouldn't that make Austria awful suspicious? You bet it would.
Face-to-face games thus become less diplomatic and more tactical ...

The game must be over since the moves were due Monday, were recieved,
and have yet to be posted. With the next moves being due tomorrow
night, this would seem to be a reasonable assumption. Even if the game
were to be continued, I would have to go CD since I have no current
unit locations and have to leave town for two days. I will be posting
my version of the game analysis in Mahoney ...

A FINAL WORD
(This is a quote from Article.005)
At this point, I would like to examine what I regard as the major
causes which impel players to cease communicating and hence, help
ruin the game.
1. DESPONDENCY. Some people commit suicide when terribly depressed. In
Diplomacy, this same frame of mind leads to withdrawal from commun-
ication, if not from the game entirely. This is the type of player
who, in chess, will resign the minute he's down a major piece. I'm
sure you've all met this type. If can't win, he'll take his marbles
and go home. No loss, really; but why did he join a game in which
he has only 1 chance in 7 of winning anyway?
2. FATALISM. This type of player believes in "que sera, sera" and as
soon as she's convinced the direction of the game is set, she stops
writing - if she ever started writing in the first place. She is
very often also the type who will wait to see what everybody else
does. Then, if she's France, she wonders why Italy moves A Ven-Pie,
England moves F Lon-Eng, and Germany moves A Mun-Bur.
In short, the good player is not one who wins, but one who negotiates.
The best players are those who never stop negotiating, even in the
face of overwhelming and seemingly immovable odds.
