VERSION : 3.5
OS : DOS
DATE : August 26, 1991 PAGE : 1/2
TITLE : Running TUNE to configure Paradox 3.5 for protected
mode operation
Paradox 3.5 has been designed to run in 286 protected mode.
However, on many machines, you will need to run Tune, in order
for Paradox to be able put the processor chip into protected mode
correctly.
Tune is run as part of the Custom Configuration Program (CCP)
script. If you are going to run the CCP in order to execute the
"Tune" program, you should first start Paradox in real mode.
This is done from the DOS prompt, in c:\pdox35 by typing:
C:\PDOX35>paradox -real custom
This will start Paradox in real mode and play the CCP script,
unless there is already a paradox.cfg file which is changing your
working directory. In that case you will get a message "Can't
find Custom Script" and you will have to change directories so
that Paradox can find the CCP. Select: Tools/More/Directory to
change to the \pdox35 directory. Then type Scripts/Play/Custom.
You are now in the Custom Configuration Program. Select the
following menu choices: Tune/ProtectedMode/Configure.
Tune will likely ask you to hit the space bar at several points
while it tests your machine. Your machine may hang or reboot
while Tune is running. This is normal. Just restart the CCP
again and rerun Tune. Tune creates markers throughout, to mark
its progress, so that it will be able to return to the point
where it last left off, until it completes its operation.
Once Paradox/Tune is complete it will return you to the
"Configure DefaultMode Return" menu. Select Return, then select
Do_it! Select hard disk, or Network (type in your private
directory if you select network). This will exit you out of
Custom: you will not be able to make any other changes at this
time, however Paradox will now be able to put your computer into
protected mode whenever you run it. You can now run the CCP
again at any time, to make any other customization changes that
you wish.
If Paradox still does not work properly in protected mode, the
most likely explanation is that you have a software conflict of
some kind. Set up a "clean machine", a so called "plain vanilla
system": rename C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT (ie to AUTOEXEC.OLD), and rename

CONFIG.SYS (ie to CONFIG.OLD). Create a temporary CONFIG.SYS
file with the following two statements:
FILES = 20
BUFFERS = 20
You can also create an autoexec.bat file with a path and prompt
statement (such as the one in your original autoexec.bat file).
Then reboot your computer. Go through the process of running
Tune again. If Paradox works now, you will need to experiment
with your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT to determine where the
conflict is and how to fix it.
For information on other sections of the CCP, check chapter 14 of
the User's Guide.
