INTRODUCTION
The CONSTITUTION Notebook Program is a PC-based study aid for the United
States Constitution.
It is software distributed on a shareware basis.
It is divided into 3 parts for distribution via BBS.
Part 1 will work without parts 2 or 3. It must be unpacked using the -d
option. Part 1 can be unpacked from another drive onto a single 720K floppy.
However, unpacking to a hard drive is recommended.
Part 1 contains those materials that you need to complete the EVALuation
exercises which are printed out when you press F3 EVAL while the Main Menu of
the TCN program is displayed. If you follow the instructions in these 14
pages of exercises exactly and do not press the F3 BROWS key (you can and
will press F3 when it has other mnemonics), you can complete the evaluation
exercises without crashing. Upon completion, you will know enough about the
TCN program to decide whether to download the other parts of the package or
to find another tool to study the Constitution.
You incur an obligation to register the TCN program after you use it 10
times. Downloading and unpacking parts 2 and 3 does NOT automatically
obligate you to register. Also, this version of the TCN program does not nag
you about registration. Neither is it crippled or copy protected in any way,
nor will it erase files or disable itself for any reason.
Part 2 contains the balance of the 100 + pages of provided commentary as well
as the user documentation files (also 100 + pages). If you download it, you
can use the F3 BROWS key without causing a crash. Part 2 will NOT work
without part 1. It must be unpacked into the same drive and directory as you
unpacked part 1. Use the -d option.
Parts 1 and 2 will fit on a single 1.44 meg floppy. However, a hard drive is
recommended.
Part 3 is totally optional. Parts 1 and 2 work fine without it. It is just
a resource of ASCII files containing the text of the 6 historically
significant rights documents that are discussed in the commentary provided
with this evaluation copy of the TCN program. The documents included are:
Magna Carta
English Bill of Rights
Declaration of Independence
French Bill of Rights
Universal Declaration of Human Rights
United States Constitution
You can use these files without having the TCN program at all. Great care
has been exercised in the preparation of the file that contains the text of
the United States Constitution. It may actually be flawless. The other
files are in pretty good shape, too, though frankly, not nearly as much care
was exercised in their preparation.
GETTING STARTED WITH PART 1
Start the TCN program. The Main Menu will appear approximately 41 seconds
(maximum, assuming you unpacked on a hard drive. Can be 75 seconds on a slow
floppy with a 4.77 MHz 8088 processor.) after you type TCN and press ENTER at
the DOS prompt. On a 33 MHz 486, less than 2 seconds is required.
Press F2 INTRO to get an introduction to the TCN program. The first 5
statements will do for now, but you can read the whole thing if you want to.
Press the ESC key to return to the Main Menu.
Press F1 to access help-on-help. This tells you about the help facility.
Just don't press the F3 BROWS key if you didn't download and unpack part 2 of
3.
Press the ESC key to return to the Main Menu.
Press F3 EVAL to print out the 14 pages of evaluation exercises. If you did
not download and unpack part 2 of 3, follow the instructions exactly to avoid
crashing the program or hanging it up. If you press F3 BROWS, the TCN
program WILL crash, guaranteed. If you try to access a seminar other than
the one specifically mentioned in the EVALuation exercises, the program will
hang up and you will have to re-boot your computer.
When you first type 4 and press ENTER, up to 3 minutes and 5 seconds
(maximum, assuming you unpacked on a hard drive. Can take 3 minutes and 45
seconds on a slow floppy with a 4.77 MHz 8088 processor.) can elapse before
the next menu appears. This delay is normal for the TCN program. It usually
occurs only once when you execute the TCN program. Download part 2 of 3 and
browse PREFACE.DOC using the help-on-help facility for more information. On
a 33 MHz 486, 4 seconds is all it takes.
The following describes some ad-libbing you can do even if you didn't
download and unpack part 2 of 3.
Type 1 and press F1 to get help about Main Menu option 1. Remember, do not
press the F3 BROWS key if you did not download and unpack part 2 of 3.
Press the ESC key to return to the Main Menu.
If you like, type each number (2 thru 14) and press F1 to review the on
screen help for the other Main Menu options. PG UP, PG DN, HOME and END work
on those helps that cover more than one screen. Instructions about F3 still
apply. Press the ESC key to return to the Main Menu.
To review shareware information, type 14 while the Main Menu is displayed and
press ENTER. Allow several seconds while the associated file is decrypted.
Function keys F2 thru F6 address specific areas about shareware distribution
as it applies to the TCN program. F7 prints the registration form.
COMPLETE DESCRIPTION
BBS distribution provides limited space for program descriptions. A more
complete description of the TCN program's capabilities follows:
US Constitution, on-screen, complete (includes 27th amendment), with over 100
pages of provided commentary plus interactive search and indexing capability,
on-screen helps, more. Provided commentary compares, contrasts the United
States Constitution with 5 other historically significant rights documents on
a paragraph-by-paragraph basis. Review, edit provided commentary or produce
your own. Independently study YOUR rights. Gauge relative reading
simplicity or complexity of various parts of the Constitution with provided
battery of lexicography data and program functions. Share your findings
using either hard copy print out or ASCII files produced using the TCN
program. Use the provided parse engine to update your package without
reordering or downloading if the Constitution is amended. Requires 512K RAM.
A trial version (includes all of parts 1, 2 and 3) that can be operated from
360K or 720K floppies is available from TCNbP Company, Box 516, OLLA, LA
71465 for $9.95. Specify disk size when ordering.
