HELLO!
Thank you for your interest in the United States Constitution.
The TCN program and the other materials in this package support an
independent study of the United States Constitution and YOUR rights.
The package is distributed on a shareware basis.

The "GO" Program
This program is the "GO" program.
Generally, the GO program introduces you to the TCN program and installs it
on your computer.
Specifically, the GO program does the following:
1. Provides information about:
a. the TCN package
b. shareware distribution
c. starting the TCN program
2. Evaluates your distribution copy of the TCN package for:
a. completeness
b. labeling
3. Verifies minimum hardware present
a. performs tests
b. notifies you of the results
c. makes recommendations based on results
4. Hard drive evaluation/operation (recommended)
a. provides default drive and directory selection
b. lets you edit defaults
c. copies the TCN package onto your hard drive
5. Supports floppy evaluation/operation
a. optional for systems with a hard disk
b. default for systems with no hard drive or inadequate space
After the TCN package is installed on a computer, you don't have to run the
GO program on that computer again.
You can run the GO program again to install the TCN package on another
computer.
MINIMUM HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
The GO program automatically checks your computer for:
1. minimum required RAM
2. hard drive present
3. minimum required hard drive space (if present)
You are advised of the results during installation.
FYI, the TCN program requires 440Kbytes of free RAM to operate. The minimum
standard configuration that provides this much RAM is 512Kbytes.
Also, FYI, the TCN program can be evaluated and even operated from floppies.
A hard drive is recommended. A minimum of 1.5 Mbytes of hard disk space is
required to operate the TCN program.
OTHER HARDWARE CONSIDERATIONS
Monitor, monochrome or color can be used.
Mouse, not required, ignored by program.
Printer, TCN and GO use device name LPT1:. If you have a laser printer, be
sure the form feed works.
Keyboard: Version 1.22 of program has more natural interface with keyboard
than prior versions.
Consider the copy of The CONSTITUTION Notebook Program that you are now using
as your ORIGINAL copy. This is the copy you should use to share the program
with others should you choose to do so. Sharing unmodified copies of this
program is perfectly legal and ok with TCNbP Company.
A properly labeled, complete set of ORIGINAL diskettes is very helpful during
installation.
TCNbP Company recommends that you prepare labels for the diskettes in your
ORIGINAL copy. Also, verify that you ORIGINAL copy is complete. To do this,
press F2 and follow the instructions that appear on your screen.
Press any other key to continue without making labels.
The next three screens help you verify that your ORIGINAL copy of The
CONSTITUTION Notebook Program is complete and that the diskettes are properly
labeled.
The first two screens help you prepare labels. The 3rd screen tells you the
actual title of each diskette. When you know the title of a diskette, you
can affix the appropriate label.
On 4 (four) diskette labels, write TCNbP Version 1.22 ORIGINAL.
Leave room to add a unique diskette title (given on the next screen) at the
bottom of each label.
TCNbP is a convenient abbreviation for The CONSTITUTION Notebook Program.
Laser labels are available at no charge to registered users.

You have a complete set of ORIGINAL diskettes.
You can proceed through the remainder of the installation.
A complete set of ORIGINAL diskettes was not detected.
You need a complete ORIGINAL set of diskettes before you install. If your
ORIGINAL set is incomplete and it came from a vendor who uses compression
routines (5 1/4" sets that consist of fewer than 4 diskettes), ensure that
you have completed the unpacking process. Otherwise, double-check your
order.
Press PG UP to repeat disk identification test.
Press ESC to exit the GO program and obtain a complete set.
Press any other key to continue with installation.
You can evaluate TCNbP on floppies and install it on your hard drive later.
One caveat: If you evaluate on floppies, the GO program will not
automatically install:
1. New seminars created with the F8 key under Main Menu option 3.
2. Different version or portion of the US Constitution parsed using
Main Menu option 10.
You can still try these functions. However, you may require technical
support from TCNbP Company to transfer the appropriate files to your hard
drive if you decide to do so later.
TCNbP Company will support registered users who take this approach.
Press function keys F1 through F6 to see information about the TCN program
and shareware. TCNbP Company recommends that you read this information.
Press function key F7 to start the installation process.
Press function key F8 to quit without installing the TCN program.
You have selected the install option.
The install option lets you install to hard drive (if available) or to
floppies.
If you wish you can press the ESC key to return to the previous screen.
Press any other key to proceed with installation.
When you press F3, the title of the diskette in the current drive is
displayed on line 21 of your display.
Press F3 now to verify the title of this diskette is "Program Diskette".
When you have done so, affix the appropriate label.
Place another diskette in the current drive and press F3. Affix the
appropriate label. Repeat until each diskette in your ORIGINAL set is
identified and labeled.
To review labeling instructions, press PG UP.
This computer does not have enough RAM free to operate the TCN program.
If it has 512Kbytes (or more) RAM installed, try unloading some TSRs and run
the GO program again.
Otherwise, try another computer.
INSTALLATION IS TERMINATED
The specified drive is not available.
Specify another drive or install on floppies.
The drive you specified does not have enough free space on it.
Your options are:
1. Specify another drive.
2. Exit the GO program and free up some hard disk space. The TCN
package requires 1.5 megabytes of hard disk space, minimum.
3. Install on floppies.
INTRODUCTION
What, EXACTLY, is written in the United States Constitution?
And what does it mean?
Any sound attempt to apply the US Constitution must address these two
questions, especially the first.
The CONSTITUTION Notebook Program is intended to help you answer these two
questions for yourself.
The package is designed to introduce itself to you and install itself on your
computer with no documentation.
When installation is complete, brief instructions required to start The
CONSTITUTION Notebook Program appear on the screen. These instructions
remind you of the drive and directory name you chose to install the program
and tell you how to access it. They tell you about the TCN command. And
they encourage you to print out the introductory exercises and perform them.
The introductory exercises tell you what the various keyboard keys do.
They also lead you to provided reports produced using the program. These
provided reports demonstrate two things:
1) One (and certainly not the only) way to interpret the Preamble, and
2) How the TCN program supports interpretation.
Using its INTERACTIVE SEARCH FUNCTION, you can determine whether or not a
remembered phrase appears in the Constitution. Vocabulary lists provide an
exact source of search words.
Using its INTERACTIVE INDEXING FUNCTION, you can compile phrases related to
any issue of interpretation. Phrases are compiled in a report with a heading
of your choice.
You can group related reports.
A report can also contain up to 1,000 words of your comments related to the
issue of interpretation it addresses.
You can create your own reports using the program.
Any report can be accessed for review, update, output to printer or an ASCII
disk file, and any report can be deleted.
The package includes both on-line and off-line materials to support your
independent study of the United States Constitution. The Constitution is
available on-line in its entirety. Five other significant historical
documents related to individual rights are available on-line in paragraph-
sized segments. All six documents are available off-line (not under program
control) in their entirety as ASCII text files. The following list names all
documents provided in this form:
Magna Carta
English Bill of Rights
Declaration of Independence
United States Constitution (and all 27 amendments)
French Bill of Rights
Universal Declaration of Human Rights
You can access these files for printout or analysis using your word
processor.
If you care to, you can type in other documents or articles related to
interpretation of the Constitution.
Using the program, you can: (1) study the Constitution as a standalone
document; (2) compare it to the five other provided significant historical
documents (available on-line in paragraph-sized segments) related to
individual rights; (3) compare it against articles or other related documents
that you type in; or (4) teachers can type in assignments or exam questions
to be completed by students.
To help you get started, the package provides on-line reports with examples
of the first two kinds of analysis accomplished using the program. You can
use the program as a tool to continue this analysis in your own way,
reviewing provided reports at your leisure, ignoring them or even deleting
them if you choose to do so.
The program includes a battery of statistics concerning word usage and
reading complexity (lexicography). If the Constitution is amended, you can
update your package without reordering.
On-line helps introduce each Main Menu option. From within each help, you
can print an entire file of information related to that Main Menu option if
desired.
Over 100 pages of user documentation is available on disk with the package.
If desired you can print specific parts of it from help screens, or all of it
either from the DOS prompt or using your word processor. However, this is
not required to evaluate the program. Once you get past the introductory
exercises, the other functions of the program are straightforward enough that
you can operate them without additional documentation. No less, scattered
throughout the documentation files are hints about using the program that may
not be intuitively obvious. Rule of thumb: If you register, you probably
should at least skim through all of it once; if you do reach a point where
you know you want to print it out, you probably should register if you
haven't already done so.
CAVEATS
TCNbP Company has made a reasonable effort to assure the quality of The
CONSTITUTION Notebook Program. In its current form, the program is powerful
enough, flexible enough and stable enough to be a viable tool for studying
the United States Constitution. However, flaws may exist in various aspects
of the product. TCNbP Company makes no claim concerning the suitability of
this product for a particular purpose.
Despite all efforts to the contrary, The CONSTITUTION Notebook Program may
crash, the output of the program may contain errors, the provided files
containing the text of the US Constitution may contain errors, errors or
omissions may occur in the provided user documentation, you might obtain a
defective copy of the program (even from TCNbP Company), your floppy drive or
your fixed drive may crash, or your computer could malfunction while you are
using the program. TCNbP Company assumes no responsibility for direct or
consequential damages that may arise out of use of the program or any part of
the package.
The user accepts all risk and responsibility resulting from use of the
program or any materials in this package.
Also, and especially, no part of the package is to be construed as legal
advice.
WARRANTY
TCNbP Company warrants that copies of the program obtained directly from
TCNbP Company are faithful copies of the program. TCNbP Company assumes no
responsibility for the quality of copies obtained from other sources. TCNbP
Company makes no other claims regarding this product. See CAVEATS in a prior

If your copy appears defective, contact the distributor who sold it to you.
If your copy came from TCNbP Company, send the purchased diskettes back to
TCNbP Company at your expense with a list of your reasons for believing they
are defective. TCNbP Company will return a new copy to you at no additional

COPYRIGHTS, THE US CONSTITUTION and SHAREWARE
Article I Section 8 of the United States Constitution reads in part:
. . . Congress shall have Power . . .
To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited
Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective
Writings and Discoveries; . . .
This paragraph of the Constitution provides the Constitutional basis for
copyrights.
The CONSTITUTION Notebook Program contains copyrighted materials.
Versions 1.05, 1.06, 1.20, 1.21 and 1.22 of The CONSTITUTION Notebook Program
are distributed on a shareware basis. The shareware mode of distribution is
in no way a relinquishment of TCNbP Company's copyright protection under the
Constitution and related statutes.
In accordance with commonly accepted shareware practices, you can evaluate
this program without incurring any obligation to TCNbP Company. However, if
you find the program useful and you continue to use it, either on a regular
or a sporadic basis, you are obligated to register. Continued unregistered
use of this program beyond an amount reasonably required for evaluation is a
violation of United States copyright laws.

SHAREWARE, COPYRIGHT, and REGISTRATION INFORMATION
As a result of the shareware mode of distribution, possession of a copy of
The CONSTITUTION Notebook Program entitles you to limited privileges.
Registration of your copy increases the extent of privileges and has other
benefits. TCNbP Company claims exclusive rights to some aspects of copyright
protection. No one else can exercise these rights without written consent
from TCNbP Company.
The following paragraphs explain the license granted to those who possess an
unregistered copy. Materials under F3 and F4 explain privileges and
exclusive rights as they apply to registered copies and unregistered copies
of The CONSTITUTION Notebook Program. Materials under F5 answer who, when
and how questions concerning registration.
Privileges for Individuals with an Unregistered Copy
First, it is perfectly ok with TCNbP Company if you possess an unregistered
copy. This is true no matter where you obtained that copy and even if you
got your copy free of charge. However, this is a license to EVALUATE the
program; it is NOT a license to use the program indefinitely without
registering. You can operate the program up to 10 times without incurring an
obligation to register. Once you determine that the program is useful to
you, you are obligated to register before using the program on a continuing
basis. Please honor the trust that has been placed in you by this, the
shareware, mode of distribution.
Second, it is perfectly ok with TCNbP Company if you make and distribute
unmodified copies of the diskettes. This is equally true for shareware
vendors and anyone else who wishes to distribute unmodified copies of the
diskettes. Any fees charged are between provider and recipient. All
warranty support is between provider and recipient. Unless otherwise stated
in writing, no fee paid to any vendor for trial diskettes applies toward

this program, shareware or not, registered or not. You can make hard copies
or soft copies. Due to concessions that had to be made for use with the
program, these files are NOT an exact replication of the United States
Constitution. There may be errors. Therefore, when you distribute copies,
please send along a copy of the file USATEXT.DOC in the directory USERDOC.
You can make unmodified hard copies or soft copies of the file USATEXT.DOC
for this purpose only. This exception does not apply to any other provided
user documentation file.
BENEFITS OF REGISTRATION

presented in the comments section of your subjects screen followed by a
line of asterisks. Add comments about related sections of other rights
documents. Also, cross index phrases from other related sections of the
US Constitution. Teachers can pass these out to students who can use
them to complete assignments.

All the preceding benefits are included at no charge with registration.
However, you can neither cite nor produce hard copy for commercial
distribution, any help screen, the provided on-line exercises, or user
documentation without written permission from TCNbP Company.
Benefits of extended registration follow.
You can buy a proof reader's tape of the United States Constitution offered
by TCNbP Company. The tape contains a reading of the United States
Constitution with spelling, initial caps, and punctuation enunciated for the
benefit of proofing the Constitution. If you are fanatical about the
accuracy of your copy of the Constitution (many versions in print contain
minor and even major errors), this tape can be of benefit to you. The tape
is available, as is, for $10.00 to registered users.
You can buy a commented version of "The Constitution Notebook" seminar. This
is similar to the uncommented version described above. However, it includes
comments prepared by TCNbP Company. Cost $10.00
You can buy uncommented versions of the seminars for the Magna Carta, English
Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence, French Bill of Rights, and
Universal Declaration of Human Rights. These are desirable to those who want
to make their own comments about the related documents without having to
erase those made by TCNbP Company. Teachers can pass these out to students
who can use them to complete assignments. Cost, $10.00.
EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS RETAINED BY TCNbP COMPANY
Those copyright privileges that TCNbP Company shares with others have been
described under F3 and F4.
Materials under this function key describe those copyright privileges that
TCNbP Company claims exclusively for itself. Possession of a copy of the
program does not entitle any individual, any group, any organization, any
corporation, any company, any sole proprietorship or any other such business
entity to these privileges, be that copy registered or not. To exercise
these privileges, you must get written permission from TCNbP Company.
Exclusive rights consist of the following:
1) Commercial production or distribution of printed user documentation
based on either:
the text of provided on-line information (including helps,
installation program screens, documentation accessed using function
keys F1 though F6, and text displayed during Main Menu option 14),
the provided on-line exercises, or
the files contained in the directory USERDOC.
2) Production or distribution of updates to, or modifications of, the
product.
3) Production or distribution of hard copies of source code in assembly
language, high-level, or any other language.
REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Materials under this function key tell who should register, when to register
and how to register.
Who Should Register
Any individual or department finding use of the program beneficial should
register. If you continue (either on a regular or sporadic basis) to use the
program past the amount allowed to evaluate it, REGISTER. See "When to
Register" in a heading which follows.
One registration is requested if the program is used by immediate family
members only.
If the program is being used in a business, government, political or other
organization, one registration is requested from each separate department
using the program. Subordinate departments are considered as being separate.
Even if the main office of an organization registers, subordinate departments
using the program should register separately.
When to Register
You are not required to register until you determine that use of the program
is beneficial to you. If you use the program on a continuing basis (either
regularly or sporadically) past a reasonable evaluation period, you must
register.
Conversely, if you try the program and discover that its use is of no benefit
to you, there is no obligation to register. Simply reformat the diskettes on
which your program resides or erase it from your fixed drive to make the
space available for something that is of benefit to you.
TCNbP Company imposes no set time period for evaluation. However, if you use
this program more than 10 times, you are obligated to register.
How to Register.
To register, complete the registration form (print it out by pressing F7) and
mail it along with your registration fee of $15.00, $25.00, or $35.00 to
TCNbP Company, P.O. Box 516, Olla, LA 71465. Verify registration fee amount
and TCNbP Company's address using the TCN program's Main Menu option 14.
NOTE: If you are installing the program, you can review the help information
for F2, F3, F4, F5 and F6 under the TCN program's Main Menu option 14. The
registration form can be printed out from there, too.
To start the TCN Program, proceed as follows:
Put the Program Diskette in a floppy drive.
Make that drive current.
1. Typically, at the DOS prompt, type A: or B:

Make the root directory current.
1. Type CD \

Type TCN
Press ENTER.
To start the TCN program, proceed as follows:
Make the current drive the hard drive you installed to.
1. At the DOS prompt, type

Type TCN
Press ENTER.
TCN PROGRAM DELAYS
Noticeable delays occur at 3 points during operation of the TCN program:
1) From the TCN command at the DOS prompt to display of the Main Menu, 75
seconds.
2) From the Main Menu to the first option that requires loading of master
data base, 3 minutes and 45 seconds. This delay is not repeated unless you
load a different version using Main Menu option 2.
3) Exiting the comment editor after the number of lines is changed, up to
15 seconds. This delay does not occur if you only browse a report.
These delays are normal.
The times above are maximum delays on an old model PC with a 4.77 MHz 8088
processor with the TCN program operating on a floppy drive. Hard drives,
coprocessors, faster clock speeds, or more powerful processors each
contribute to faster operation.
This information is provided so you can know that your machine is not locked
up.
When you start the TCN program for the first time . . .
When the Main Menu appears, press F1 before doing anything else. This gives
you help on help.
If you didn't read the INTROduction under F1 a few screens back, not to
worry. It's available under F2.
Press F3 to print out the EVALuation exercises.
STARTING THE TCN PROGRAM
INSTALLATION OF THE TCN PROGRAM IS NOW COMPLETE!
The following instructions help you operate the TCN program, both during
evaluation and later.
You can browse through them now using PG UP and PG DN.
You can print them out now using the F7 key.
These instructions are automatically saved in a file named START.DOC on the
copy of your User Documentation Diskette now residing in the current drive.
This file can be browsed later using your word processor or the DOS command
TYPE START.DOC |MORE.
You can print the file later using your word processor or the DOS command
TYPE START.DOC >PRN.

TCN PROGRAM DATA BACKUP
Files associated with the TCN package are created or modified when you:
edit, create, delete, or modify (synonym or subject) reports; create a new
seminar; parse another version or portion of the US Constitution, or; edit
syllable data.
TCNbP Company recommends that you periodically backup your data files
associated with the TCN package.
EXITING THE GO PROGRAM
To exit the GO program, press ESC 3 times.
Then start the TCN program as described previously.

A copy of TCN or LX already exists on the specified path.
If you continue installation on the specified path, all associated
information will be permanently lost.

HELP ON HELP
The F1 function key is the Help key.
Context sensitive help is available for Main Menu options 2 - 9, 11, and 13.
Press F1 when "1 Help" is displayed at the left side of the bottom line on
the screen.
To get help for any Main Menu option, type its number while the Main Menu is
displayed and press F1.
To operate a Main Menu option, type its number while the Main Menu is
displayed and press ENTER.
BACK SPACE or DELETE keys clear your typed entry if you make a mistake.
To get this help on help screen, press F1 without typing a number.
The intent of on-screen help is to aid your evaluation of the TCN Program.
Help text mostly tells what you can do and why you might want to do it.
Detailed information telling how to accomplish various tasks keystroke-by-
keystroke is contained in the user documentation files. When the help for a
Main Menu option is displayed, press F3 to browse the entire related user
documentation file.
While browsing a user documentation file, press F7 to print that file.
Help on help allows you to browse user documentation files not related to a
specific Main Menu option. A menu of these files follows. To access one of
these files, press F3, type its number and press ENTER. While browsing any
of these files, press F7 to print it.

NOTE: EVAL.DOC is a 14-page file that introduces you to the program. You
can browse it or print it out here. You can also print it out by pressing
the F3 key while the Main Menu is displayed. TCNbP Company strongly
recommends that you use these materials to guide your evaluation of The
CONSTITUTION Notebook Program.
You can print the entire user manual using the BOOK command. To do this,
exit this program. Put the user documentation diskette (2 of 2) or (4 of 4)
in the current drive. At the DOS prompt, type BOOK. Have 120 sheets of
paper in your printer.
EXIT
Use the Exit option to exit the TCN program without rebooting your computer.
Select Main Menu option 1.
Press ENTER.
Type Y or y. (No need to press ENTER.)
You are returned to DOS or your desktop/menu program.
If you do not want to exit, type n or N.
You are returned to the Main Menu screen.
CHOOSE VERSION OR PORTION
Use the Choose Version or Portion option to select the version of the United
States Constitution that you want to work in.
The default version is the entire Constitution and all 27 amendments along
with the ratification resolution and the resolution proposing the Bill of
Rights.
If you do not use option 2, the default version of the Constitution is read
by the program the first time you operate an option that needs the data.
Version is at the top level of the notebook data hierarchy. Below version
are seminars and reports (synonym and subject).
To operate Choose Version or Portion, type 2 at the Main Menu
Press ENTER.
All data displayed on this screen is entered during Main Menu option 10
dialogue.
Use the up or down arrow keys, HOME, END, PG UP, PG DN to scroll through the
available versions.
Highlight a version and press ENTER to select it.
Press ESC to keep the current version or portion loaded.
CHOOSE SEMINAR
Use the Choose Seminar option to select an existing seminar or to create a
new seminar. Notice that version 1.22 does not support seminar deletion.
The default seminar is the first seminar associated with the current version.
You can change the title of a seminar at any time by highlighting it and
typing the new title.
Use scroll keys to highlight a desired seminar and press ENTER to select it.
Press F8 to create a new seminar. Its title gets put at the end of the
existing list. Rearrangement is not supported.
Seminar is the 2nd tier in the notebook data hierarchy. Above it is version.
Below it are reports (subject and synonym).
SUBJECT
Use the Subject option to create a new report, review, edit, delete or print
any report or export it to an ASCII file.
A subject report consists of a title, a list of key words, a list of related
phrases, and up to 190 lines of comments that you type in.
The title is up to 60 characters long. You can change the title of a report
by highlighting it and typing the changes.
Subject reports occupy half (synonyms are other half) of the bottom tier of
the notebook data hierarchy. Above them are seminars and versions.
Subject reports are useful when addressing an aspect of Constitutional
interpretation not strictly related to word use. The title makes the
difference between a subject report and a synonym report.

EVALuation exercises printed out using F3 at the Main Menu.

Use the Word Parameter Search option to compile lists of words based on raw
word data.
You can use this option to generate a vocabulary list of a single Article,
paragraph, or sentence - even a clause.
Most individuals who use this option likely suffer from chronic
lexicographer's syndrome!
PARAMETER SEARCHES, CLAUSES
Use the Clause Parameter Search option to compile lists of clauses conforming
to raw complexity data.
Among those using this option likely are rabid trivia buffs who will
enthusiastically stump unsuspecting friends and relatives with questions like
"What is the longest clause in the United States Constitution?"
PROFILES, WORD USE
Use the reports displayed under the Word Use Profile option to gauge the
reading complexity of a version or portion of the US Constitution.
You can parse sections of the Constitution using Main Menu option 10. Have a
look at Main Menu option 2 to see the provided parsed sections.
Statistics displayed with the Word Use Profile option are compiled from the
entire parsed section. You can parse fairly small sections; however, the
parse engine begins to squirrel out as the parsed sections get smaller. The
data produced by the provided parsed sections appears reliable as far as has
been checked thus far. TCNbP Company makes no claims regarding the accuracy
of the results produced by this function. It seems reliable enough to beat a
manually generated profile or no profile, but that's about all.

ANALYZE SOURCE FILE
Use the Analyze Source File option to produce an encoded version of a version
of the Constitution that you wish to analyze.
One benefit of this encoding is that it cannot be changed from within the
program. Thus, whatever you see on the screen a year from now is what you
entered as your Constitution text, no matter how often you edit the source
files. (Although, TCNbP Company recommends that you keep a secure copy of
any source file you ever parse as an additional form of backup.)
TCNbP Company has exercised excruciating care to produce a reliable rendition
of Constitutional text for this program. Nonetheless, compromises had to be
made. If the approach taken by TCNbP Company significantly interferes with
some aspect of your interpretation, modify the provided text files of the
Constitution and parse it using this option.
Other reasons to parse a version are: in case the Constitution is amended;
for fun - just to see the parse engine run. Race your computer against your
neighbor's computer; to produce profile data for Main Menu options 8 and 9;
maybe to parse a version of the Constitution with superseded phrases omitted.
You might want to devote an entire data base to one specific area of study.
You can parse the exact same file again and use that separate but identical
data base for a different area of study.
This help has given you hints about what you can do and why you might want or

SYLLABLE DATA
Use the Syllable Data option to input or edit raw data describing the number
of syllables in each word used in the Constitution.
The TCN program can automatically count the number of letters in a word, or
the number of times that a word is used. However, it cannot automatically
determine the number of syllables in a word. The user (you) have to tell it.
The Syllable Data option is the tool that lets you do that.
If you parse a different version of the US Constitution, select vocabulary
list 2 under Main Menu option 11. Words (if any) requiring syllable data
will float to the top of this list since the computer thinks they have zero
syllables. Enter the appropriate number of syllables for each word.
Highlighting advances automatically each time you press a number key.
When you press ESC, your data is saved. You are given the option to update
your profiles for Main Menu options 8 and 9. Syllable sort is updated, also.
If you decline, you can do it later using Main Menu option 8, secondary menu
option 4 to produce identical results.
OPTIONS
Use the Options option to check or modify installation options.
Secondary menu option 2 is the most used. It selects foreground and
background colors for the TCN program.
If you used the install program (GO), you really shouldn't need the other two
options on the secondary menu. They are provided to support registered users
only.
Their use is not intuitively obvious.
CHOOSE VOCABULARY LIST
Use the Choose Vocabulary List option to select a list other than the default
list or to get the default list back.
When Main Menu option 10 is used, 9 unique vocabulary lists based on the
source file are produced by the parse engine. Each of these lists can
contribute in some unique way to analyzing the US Constitution. Admittedly,
few users will use them all. But many will use more than one. TCNbP Company
has provided the lists for you to use or ignore at your leisure.
The properties of each list are described in the file MM13.DOC which can be
browsed from this screen using F3.
SHAREWARE INFORMATION
Use the Shareware Information option to obtain information regarding
registration of the TCN program.
The information that comes up on the screen is protected in an encrypted
file. Use that address and payment amount information. The encrypted
information is displayed first when you operate Main Menu option 14. If you
press a function key, the encrypted information is not repeated when you
ESCape from the function key text. To see the encrypted text again, exit to
the Main Menu and come back to Main Menu option 14.
Use the function keys to review additional information (also made available
in the install, GO, program) regarding your license to evaluate the TCN
program.
You incur an obligation to register with TCNbP Company no later than the 11th
time you use this program. If you do not know what this means, use Main Menu
option 14 to find out.

information about word use.
One important piece of information is the list or lists in which a word

Use the browse key to read more information about the various vocabulary
lists.
F2 CONC Help
Concordance-like listing of phrases.
Keywords are highlighted.
If you press F2 in a vocabulary list, all displayed phrases have the same
keyword. If you pressed F2 while in the middle column of a Subjects screen
or a Synonym screen, various phrases can contain different keywords or screen
can be empty.
You can use this display to add or delete indexes of individual occurrences
of a keyword. Watch prompt at bottom of screen for advice.
Left column contains a reference that corresponds to each displayed phrase.
The reference indicates in which part of the Constitution the corresponding
phrase appears. Art = Article Amd = Amendment Sec = Section
F3 Text Help
Text of the United States Constitution.
You can scroll through the Constitution using the PG UP or PG DN keys to move
one screen at a time.
Key words are highlighted.
You can move among occurrences of key words using the left and right arrow
keys.
The HOME and END keys are active.
Subjects Title Select Screen Help
Screen contains list of titles in current seminar (selected using Main Menu
option 3). Titles can be provided by TCNbP Company or created by you.
Screen may contain a single blank highlighted (reverse video) line.
To change existing title, use the scroll keys to highlight it and type new
title.
To create a new title, press F8. A blank highlighted line is created at the
end of the existing list.
To access a heading, highlight it and press ENTER.
To delete a heading, access it, TAB to the Subject Heading: field and press
F4.
Vocabulary List Help
The vocabulary list appears in the left column of the Subject screen or the
Synonym screen.
Press F2 to display all phrases that contain the highlighted word.
Press F3 to display Constitutional text that contains the highlighted word.
Select from 9 available lists using Main Menu option 13.
Use the TAB key to move among fields and columns of this screen.
Observe the prompt at the bottom of the screen for advice.
Synonyms Titles Help
The middle column contains a list of words with synonyms.
It can be blank. If so, you cannot access it.
To add a word to this list, highlight it in the left column and press ENTER.
Thus you create a title.
To access a title, TAB into the middle column, highlight the desired title
and press ENTER. The entire middle column changes.
Key Words Help
The middle column contains a list of key words related to the current heading
or title.
Key words are added from the left column using the ENTER key or F2 and the
ENTER key.
Use F4 in the middle column to delete key words.
Comments Help
The comments column appears at the right side of the screen.
It can contain up to 190 lines of comments provided by TCNbP Company or typed
in by you.
You can access any comments for review or update at any time.
Subject Title Help
The third line of the screen contains the title of the selected subject.
TAB into this field to print out the subject or delete it.
Synonym Title Help
The synonym title appears at the top of the middle column.
TAB into this field to print out the synonym report or delete it.
Syllable Data Entry List Help
The list displayed is a vocabulary list much like the ones available under
Main Menu option 13. However, you can enter or edit syllable data in the
vocabulary list displayed using Main Menu option 11.
You can scroll through the list using PG UP, PG DN, HOME, END, and the up and
down arrow keys as per usual.
If you type a number, it is entered in the syllable data column and the
highlighting is advanced to the next word automatically. No need to press
ENTER.
