The Romans celebrated the festival of the Lupercalia on February 15th and they also believed that on February 14th was the first day of spring and the mating season for birds. The latter promoted people to begin selecting mates on the 14th and having a festive celebration of their choice on the 15th. Over several years this remained the custom.
