The first known written form of the phrase was in 1845 in The Oxford English Dictionary. The first time it appeared in any story was in William Makepeace Thackeray when he used it in a story submitted and printed in a magazine called Punch. * Johnny-come-lately: someone who arrives late or someone who is not very experienced, or a newcomer. The usage of this phrase first appeared in 1839 when journalist Charles F. Briggs wrote it in "The Adventures of Harry Franco."
