... I always hope that this chapter will be nonexistent in each number of SWB
but unfortunately there are allways some programs that disappoint me so much I
wouldn't like others to 'be had' or using time/money to aqquire something (in
my eyes) useless.
There are enough good ones out there! My compliments to the authors this month
- only two programs !!!
1. FALLING demo - CSG - disappointing VGA and SoundBlaster demo ...
2. BUTTONSTAR 1.21s - Mark DiBiaso - restrictions make one think!

│ 1. * FALLING demo (c) 1992 CSG │
└───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
This australian demo with about 270 kb of VGA 320x200 graphics and SoundBla-
ster should be able to produce something original and beautiful but doesn't!
The foreground is a nice falling figure taken from Sierra's SpaceQuest IV and
the background is the old Funnel rainbow cirkle making the impression that he
is falling ... with the one originality that some hair is moving due to the
wind pressure and no other variations on the theme ...
The scrolling text is not impressive or contains any interesting.
I cannot speak of the SB-sound (as owner of an AdLib) but my primary interest
in these demos are mostly that I hope for beautiful graphics which is not
fullfilled with this one ...
Something funny about distribution licenses - Falling is for free, but author
(why does most demoauthors have to hide behind nicknames ... I find nothing
'cool' about that - only see fear of that author's own name is not impressive
enough!) prohibits commerciel distribution for a fee!
Must admit that I don't think he can legally make such a claim when you con-
sider that the interesting graphics is not his own!!!
Just to make it clear: I'm not tempted and I do follow authors wishes!
Can be found on bbs's. Not recommendable!

..... ???
Sorry! was just following Mark DiBiaso's example for his ButtonStar program
for Windows 3.x but it isn't very understandable so we'll start again from
scratch in normal language:
How can anyone be able able to test a program if it is only possible to test
10% of it and you are restricted from accessing to at least 60% of your pro-
grams ???
Marks idea about a buttonbased program launcher together with or instead of
Program Manager SEEMS to a very nice idea ... untill the restrictions built
in the program make one think a bit further !
The idea is a long toolbar with all icons collected in the bar - move your
mouse to an icon and the name is shown on the title bar, doubleclik on one
and launch it ...
The install program in nicely done and installs ButtonStar in ProgramManager
without difficulties, and Mark informs well enough of changes in the system to
be undone after testing ...
Unfortunately Mark only has chosen to activate 9 buttons out of the possible
66 and every user who choses to install ButtonStar INSTEAD of Program Manager
is then restricted from accessing most of his programs as ButtonStar uses 2 of
stated 9 buttons for itself with 7 left to the user...
It is of course possible to test those installed icons but at this point I
really had lost the interest in it .... and began to think a bit! With 6 to
7 programs in the launchbar it is about the same size as one of my ProgMan
groups, and the extra facilities just doesn't seem worth it (a litte memory
display etc) ...
... and even if - then I would get allmost the same possibilities with collec-
ting all icons in one group and keep this open which would almost be the same
as the maximum of 66 buttons ..... and for users with bigger harddisks the ca-
pacity of 66 buttons (or rather 64) seems to small!
No, I won't buy this one!
DemoWare - full version costs 18$ + s/h - it normally can't be said that 20$
or less isn't too much for ANY program when author has to mail a disk with up-
date and/or full version but I might be tempted here!
