STACKER NOTE Stac Electronics Technical Note
Subject: Using Diskeditors to Eliminate Invalid Directory Entries.
STEC001 - 4/09/92
____________________________________________________________________________
Occasionally, when disk repair utilities such as Norton Disk Doctor or
PCTools diskfix cannot repair invalid directory entries, it is necessary to
delete them using a diskeditor. This note features two procedures for doing
so using Norton Diskeditor or the Edit Disk function of PCSHELL. After
following these procedures, it is necessary to run CHKDSK /F on the Stacker
drive to reclaim lost clusters.
Procedures:
============== USING NORTON DISKEDIT =======================================
1)in NORTON UTILITIES execute DISKEDIT /W.
2)press Alt-D and select the host drive
3)press Alt-R and select the root directory
4)Place the highlighted bar on the Stacvol file and <ENTER>
5)press F4 to view as directory
6)press Ctrl-S
7)enter name of directory or file to be deleted and <ENTER>
8)press F2
9)type E5 (this is the DOS delete character)
10)press Ctrl-Q to write changes
11)EXIT diskedit
12)REBOOT
================= USING PCSHELL=========================================
1)Execute PCSHELL d: (WHERE d:=HOST DRIVE LETTER)
2)with mouse or arrow keys select the STACVOL file (in the root dir.)
3)press Alt F(FILE) and select <SEARCH> (press H)
4)enter name of directory or file to be deleted and <ENTER>
5)select O.K. (will report FOUND)
6)select EDIT
7)type E5 (We are now in the HEX EDITOR.)
8)press F5 to save
9)EXIT pcshell
10)REBOOT
** Don't forget to run CHKDSK /F on the Stacker drive to reclaim lost
clusters. (When prompted to convert chains to files type N(o) )
