Welcome, Sysop!
Installing a new copy of SRE
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Welcome to SRE 0.986. To install this program should be simple, but
sometimes it might be frustrating if your BBS and SRE don't want to get
along.
1. Type INSTALL SRE to set up the doorfile information and create a
batch file. We have tested the game with DOOR.SYS and DORINFO1.DEF;
I do not yet have support for the 52-line DOOR.SYS. I have
added several others, but they are not fully tested. If one
does not work, try another. For example, Spitfire has 4
formats; one may work! There isn't any harm in installing for a
compatible BBS format; for example, if you run TAG, and you wish
to set up for DORINFO1.DEF instead of DOOR.SYS, you can run the
RBBS setup.
2. Install the door to run the batch file (SRE.BAT) from the BBS.
(See your BBS manual if you do not know how to do this. The
installer may have some clues also.)
2.1.If you have Wildcat 3.0 or WWIV, the game may have trouble
running locally. You may want to ask a remote user to try the
game before you throw it out. Also, if it works remotely, then
to run locally, use a second copy of the batch file that has the
switch /LOCAL when you run SRE.
2.2.If you have WWIV, there is a program available on our BBS
(WW4SR21.ARJ) that helps you set up SRE with WWIV. (Try it only
if you can't get SRE to run with our INSTALL program.)
2.3.If you have Genesis Deluxe, there is a program called GENPC that
will replace SRDOOR. SRDOOR attempts to convert Genesis Deluxe
door info to DOORFILE.SR; GENPC will do this also, but the
author of GENPC knows exactly how Genesis works, so GENPC works
better than SRDOOR. Also, I have asked Carter Downer to send me
the door format for Genesis Deluxe, so SRE will soon support
Genesis Deluxe.
2.4.If you have PC-Board 14.x, there is a program called P2SR that
will replace SRDOOR. You can set up for PC-Board 12, and then
replace the line in your batch file with "SRDOOR" with "P2SR".
2.5.If you have Wildcat 3.0, and you can't get it to work REMOTELY,
please read WARNING.!!!.
3. RESET the game with "SRE RESET". *** VERY IMPORTANT ***
(Note: SRE.EXE is the executable, and RESET is the parameter.)
Upgrading an older version of SRE
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Just UNARJ the SRE.ARJ file. The data files, *.SR, are not included
in the ARJ so that your game will not be erased. You do not have to reset,
but sometimes certain features of the new game may not work correctly. A
RESET will enable all features of the new version to work, but until then
you can still continue your old game. If you have a version 0.974 or
older, re-run INSTALL and make a new batch file. (The new batch file is
several times faster than the old one.) I recommending a RESET also, if
you're running 0.974 or older, but you don't have to.
Have fun with the game, and be sure to fill out the registration! If you
would like to register, fill out the form in SREREG.TXT. Registration is
done by sending registration numbers; you do not have to call us to get a
registered version.
One new feature added in SRE 0.983 is RESOURCE.DAT. There is NO such
file included with the ARJ because if you just unarj everything, it would
write over your file! So the instructions are in RESOURCE.HLP, and you
can look at that file if you'd like to customize SRE with RESOURCE.DAT.
You can also customize the game with ANSI screens (see SRE.DOC for details),
or your own text descriptions. To add text descriptions, see SREHELP.DAT,
and put your descriptions in HELP.DAT.
Another thing is the WALKTHRU.SRE file; this is a sample game that's played
by me! To watch me play, type
SRE Display WALKTHRU.SRE /Local
(I'm not a very good player, though.)
Read WHATS.NEW! If you have any more questions, see Q&A.TXT!
