  21.    This diskette contains drivers and programs for Windows 3.1 users who
  22.    have a Sound Blaster Micro Channel Version.
  23.  
  24.    If you obtained the drivers and programs mentioned in this file as a ZIP
  25.    file from a bulletin board, please unzip the contents into a diskette
  26.    labeled

  48. III. Installing the drivers
  49. ---------------------------
  50.  
  51.    1. Start Windows v3.1.
  52.  
  53.    2. Open the Control Panel and select the Drivers icon.
  54.  
  55.    3. You should have the following driver names in the Installed Drivers
  56.       list:
  57.  
  58.             MIDI Mapper
  59.             Timer
  60.             [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  61.             [MCI] Sound
  62.  
  63.       If you have other drivers installed, please remove them with the
  64.       REMOVE button and restart Windows before continuing.  If any of these
  65.       drivers are not listed, please add them before continuing.  (See your
  66.       Windows manual for details on adding these drivers.)  Make sure you
  67.       restart Windows after making changes to the driver list.
  68.  
  69.    4. Click on the ADD button.
  70.  
  71.    5. Select Unlisted or Updated driver and click on OK.
  72.  
  73.    6. Insert the floppy containing the drivers.
  74.  
  75.    7. Type in the drive letter of the floppy drive containing the driver disk.
  76.  
  77.    WARNING! - The following steps will OVERWRITE your existing MIDIMAP.CFG
  78.               configuration.  If you want to keep your existing
  79.               configuration, click on CANCEL and make a copy of MIDIMAP.CFG
  80.               before continuing the installation process.
  81.  
  82.    8. Select Sound Blaster MIDI Synthesizer and click on OK.
  83.  
  84.    9. Windows will ask if you want to use the current MIDIMAP.CFG or install
  85.       the new MIDIMAP.CFG - Select NEW and continue on.
  86.  
  87.   10. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address.  The default
  88.       I/O address is 220H.
  89.  
  90.   11. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  91.       DON'T RESTART, then repeat steps 4, 5, 6, and 7.
  92.  
  93.   12. Select Sound Blaster MCV Wave and MIDI.  Click on OK.
  94.  
  95.   13. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address, Interrupt, and
  96.       DMA channel. Choose the settings your card is set to and continue on.
  97.  
  98.   14. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  99.       RESTART.  Windows will then restart.
  100.  
  101.   15. An additional Windows applications is provided.  The filename is
  102.       MMJBOX.EXE.  Please copy them into your Windows directory.

  105. IV. What to do if the drivers don't install correctly
  106. -----------------------------------------------------
  107.  
  108.    If you are having problems installing the drivers, here are some things to
  109.    check before you call Technical Support.  Also, be sure to read the
  110.    "Important Notes" section below.
  111.  
  112. ** 1. If you installed Windows 3.1 using the "Express Installation,"  Windows
  113.       scanned your hard disk for programs to be installed.  As a result, older
  114.       versions of the Jukebox, and Mixer were installed if they were on your
  115.       hard disk at the time of installation.  Please remove these icons.  To do
  116.       this, click on the icon once to select it, then press the delete key.
  117.       Windows will ask you for confirmation.  Repeat for each icon.
  118.  
  119.    2. Check the size and date of all the driver files in the Windows SYSTEM
  120.       directory against the listing in the section "Diskette Contents".  Make
  121.       sure that the correct drivers have been copied to your hard disk.
  122.  
  123.    3. Open the Driver applet in Control panel.  You should at least have the
  124.       following driver names in the Installed Drivers list:
  125.  
  126.             Creative Sound Blaster MCV MIDI Synthesizer
  127.             Creative Sound Blaster MCV Wave and MIDI
  128.             MIDI Mapper
  129.             Timer
  130.             [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  131.             [MCI] Sound
  132.  
  133.       If one or more of these drivers do not exist, you must install the
  134.       driver(s) using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See the Windows
  135.       manual for more details).
  136.  
  137.    4. Check your SYSTEM.INI by choosing RUN from the File menu of the Program
  138.       Manager, and typing SYSEDIT in the command line box.  Examine the
  139.       [drivers] and [sndblst.drv] sections.  They should look something like
  140.       this:

  154.    5. If Windows refuses to install a device driver or you get the error
  155.       message "Device not found" when playing a Wave or MIDI file, be sure you
  156.       have the following settings in the [mci] section of SYSTEM.INI
  157.  
  158.               [mci]
  159.               WaveAudio=mciwave.drv
  160.               Sequencer=mciseq.drv
  161.  
  162.       If one or more of these do not exist, you must install the driver(s)
  163.       using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See the Windows manual for
  164.       instructions).  Do not type in the entries into the SYSTEM.INI because
  165.       the files have to be installed into your SYSTEM directory by Windows.

  168. V. If you upgraded from Windows 3.0 to Windows 3.1
  169. --------------------------------------------------
  170.  
  171.    If you upgraded an existing copy of Windows 3.0 or Windows 3.0 with
  172.    Multimedia Extensions to Windows 3.1, here are some special notes to
  173.    consider.
  174.  
  175.    1. If you have a line which reads "device=vsbd.386" in the [386Enh] section
  176.       of SYSTEM.INI, please delete it.  This is an old driver which has been
  177.       replaced by VSBPD.386.  The new driver will not work correctly until this
  178.       line is removed.
  179.  
  180.    2. After installing Windows 3.1, verify that the latest MMJBOX.EXE,
  181.       SBFM.DRV and SBMCVSND.DRV have been copied to your hard disk.  Check the
  182.       size and date of these files against the listing in the section
  183.       "Diskette Contents".  You can delete any older versions that you find
  184.       in your system.

  187. VI. Important notes
  188. -------------------

  193.    1. The drivers found in the file CREATE.EXE on Microsoft's BBS and in the
  194.       Microsoft Forum on CompuServe are not the latest drivers for Windows 3.1
  195.       and may not work properly.  Please do not use them.
  196.  
  197.    2. The drivers that are included with the Windows 3.1 Resource Kit are not
  198.       the lastest drivers and may not work properly.  Please do not use them.
  199.  
  200.    3. Some PS/2 computers receive a "Bus timeout error" or the system locks up
  201.       when running Windows 3.1 in 386 Enhanced Mode.  To get around this
  202.       problem, run Windows in Standard Mode after turning on your machine or
  203.       rebooting it.  Then exit Windows and rerun it in Enhanced Mode.
  204.  
  205.    4. We are including drivers that make use of Device Virtualization.  These
  206.       drivers will allow DOS Apps that use the Sound Blaster to run in Enhanced
  207.       Mode.
  208.  
  209.       Please make sure that a line reading "device=vsbpd.386" exists under the
  210.       [386Enh] section in your SYSTEM.INI.  If you have a line which reads
  211.       "device=vsbd.386", please delete it.  Also, make sure the file VSBPD.386
  212.       is in your Windows SYSTEM directory.  If it is not, copy it from the
  213.       Drivers Disk.
  214.  
  215.    5. The Windows 3.1 drivers can now be used in both Windows 3.0 with
  216.       Multimedia extensions as well as Windows 3.1.  They will check the
  217.       Windows version and use the correct Sound Blaster section name to access
  218.       the settings in the SYSTEM.INI.
  219.  
  220.    6. A MIDI-MAP has been created to make use of the SBFM.DRV, please use the
  221.       MIDI MAPPER icon under Control Panel to customize it to your requirements.
  222.  
  223.       Under Windows 3.1, MIDI channel 10 is referenced as the drum channel.
  224.       If you are having problems with the FM synth not sounding "right", try
  225.       modifying the configuration with the MIDI Mapper.
  226.
