San Luis Valley, Colorado
A new world speed record for the flying start 200 meter event has been
set by Coors Light pro cyclist Chris Huber, in the Dexter Hysol
"Cheetah".
The new record is 68.72 mph (110 kph).
The "Cheetah" is a 29.5 pound, fully enclosed recumbent made primarily
of carbon fiber. It was designed and built by Jon Garbarino, Kevin
Frantz, and James Osborn. Sponsors included Dexter Hysol, Campagnolo,
Coors, Supracor, and Continental.
The record attempt was sanctioned by the International Human Powered
Vehicle Association (IHPVA); Brian Wilson and Robert Sainato were present
as the official IHPVA observers.
The previous record of 65.48 mph was established in 1986 at Mono
Lake, California by Fred Markham, riding the Easy Racers "Gold Rush".
