o OVERVIEW
This documentation describes the installation and operation of PNETBIOS.DLC,
a Dynamic Link Connection module that allows PROCOMM PLUS for Windows to
operate over a Local Area Network that supports the NetBIOS API. Using
PNETBIOS.DLC, you can access another PC acting as a NetBIOS server anywhere
on your LAN as if it were attached to your local PC.
o REQUIREMENTS
To use PNETBIOS.DLC, you'll require the following:
1] An installed copy of PROCOMM PLUS for Windows, version 1.x.
2] A network with NetBIOS capability - or, for those networks without
NetBIOS capability, a NetBIOS emulator. PNETBIOS.DLC was developed and
tested with version 3.01 revision F of Novell's NETBIOS.EXE.
Note that your connection throughput will vary depending on your network's
current load - during periods of high traffic, the speed and responsiveness
of your connection may drop, but performance should return to normal when
the network is not as heavily loaded.
o INSTALLATION
For those networks without NetBIOS support, a NetBIOS emulator must be
loaded and resident before you run Windows to ensure that PROCOMM PLUS for
Windows can recognize a network connection.
PNETBIOS.DLC installation is simple and straightforward: simply copy the
file to your PROCOMM PLUS for Windows home directory! Your home
directory contains all of your PROCOMM PLUS for Windows executables (for
example, the files PW.EXE amd ASPCOMPW.EXE) - the default directory name
assigned during installation is \PROWIN.
o MAKING THE NETWORK CONNECTION
PNETBIOS.DLC can create three types of NetBIOS connections:
1. Client (Queried). Select this to specify a host PC each time you
connect. The target PC defaults to the last specified connection.
2. Client (Dedicated). Select this to "attach" a connection to a specific
host PC - unlike a Queried Client entry, PROCOMM PLUS for Windows
will not prompt you for a host name, and the connection is attempted
immediately.
3. Host. This type configures your PC as a NetBIOS server host, allowing
other NetBIOS users to connect to your PC.
To create a custom PROCOMM PLUS for Windows NetBIOS connection, follow
these steps:
1] Open the Setup window and double-click on the Connection field.
2] Click on the Add button. From the drop-down list box, select DIRECT
CONNECT.
3] Click on the Install button.
4] From the Select Port list box, double-click on one of the NetBIOS entries;
"NetBIOSQ" for a Queried Client connection, "NetBIOSD" for a Dedicated
Client connection and "NetBIOSS" for a Server connection. Note that these
entries will NOT appear unless you loaded NETBIOS.EXE before running
Windows.
a. If you select the Queried Client connection, PROCOMM PLUS for
Windows prompts you for a UNIQUE name for the new connection; enter
a name and click on OK. The Make NetBIOS Connection dialog appears.
Enter a client name for your PC and the name of the server PC, and
click on OK. If you enter valid names for the client and server,
the connection is made - if not, an error message is displayed.
The Make NetBIOS Connection dialog appears each time you select this
connection, so you can use it as a "generic" client for any server
on your network.
b. If you select the Dedicated Client connection, PROCOMM PLUS for
Windows prompts you for a UNIQUE name for the new connection, the
client name for your PC and the name of the server PC. Enter all
three names and click on OK. If you enter valid names for the client
and server, the connection is made - if not, an error message is
displayed. Note that a Dedicated Client entry immediately attempts
to connect to the server as soon as it's selected.
c. If you select the Server (Host) connection, PROCOMM PLUS for Windows
prompts you for a UNIQUE name for the new connection and a server name
to assign to your PC. Make sure your client users know your server
name, since they'll need it to connect. When this entry is selected,
PROCOMM PLUS for Windows adds the server to the NetBIOS name table and
then displays a Status window, which includes a Cancel button to
terminate server operation. Note that PROCOMM PLUS for Windows will
display a message "Serial port not responding" on the status line
after you cancel server operation; this message indicates that you
must select another connection before continuing.
Under PROCOMM PLUS for Windows, the NetBIOS client and server names you
specify are not case-sensitive.
You've now created a NetBIOS connection entry in your Setup window! For more
information about specifying this connection as the default or adding it to
one or more Dialing Directory entries, please refer to your PROCOMM PLUS for
Windows User Manual.
o TERMINATING A NETBIOS CONNECTION
If you're acting as a NetBIOS client, the Hangup command and Action Bar Hangup
icon will not work. To disconnect from a server, simply:
1] Open the Setup window and click once on the Connection field.
2] Select any other connection.
Alternately, you can also select a Dialing Directory entry containing another
connection - PROCOMM PLUS for Windows automatically terminates the current
connection before initiating the new connection.
