Welcome to PHONE Version 3.01
*****************************************************************
* PHONE IS A SHAREWARE PROGRAM *
* PLEASE SEE THE REGISTER.ME FILE FOR REGISTRATION INFORMATION. *
*****************************************************************
Simply put, PHONE is a program that can be used by anyone with a
personal computer to keep track of names, addresses, and phone
numbers.
However, it is much more than that.
PHONE can be used by business for a sales tool and mailing list
manager. For personal use, PHONE can be used to keep track of
directions, spouse and children names, birthdays, etc.
PHONE can print labels, and you can select which records you
want labels for. Certain zip codes, only one state, only records
tagged by you, or even label codes which can, for example, be a
sales representative's number.
PHONE will dial your phone for you.
PHONE is programmed with special network awareness, allowing
multiple users to access the records at the same time. It can
run on a network, or an individual PC.
PHONE can be customized for your own choice of screen colors,
your printer, and your name on reports. It is programmed to run
on computers with mono or color monitors.
PHONE will give you help when needed. What is the abbreviation
for Arizona? Press F9 and PHONE will tell you.
PHONE can export your records to a SDF file so the Post Office
can update your address and zip code information for you. It will
also print out a zip code summary of all your records, to help
business mailers with bulk rate mailings. The bar code printing
feature can help save you postage, and speed mail delivery.
PHONE can be used for sales and marketing, to keep track of the
last contact with a customer or prospect, and print out a list
of records who are due to be contacted.
PHONE will Pop-up a calendar on screen to help you look up a date.
PHONE will back up your records for you, and will even tell you
information about your computer system.
But enough advertising, let's get started......
Installing PHONE is easy. Just type INSTALL from the DOS Prompt
where your PHONE files are. The only thing you have to decide
is the drive and directory where you want PHONE installed to,
and PHONE even gives you a default suggestion you can use.
PHONE will create the directory for you if it doesn't exist.
The install program will automatically upgrade your files from a
previous version. Just type INSTALL and use the upgrade option.
See PHONE.DOC for more information on upgrading.
=======================================================================
NOTE: If you do not have a C: or D: drive with at about 1 meg free
space (a hard drive, or a large RAM drive) or if you have
any trouble with the first part of the install program,
you need to start the installation manually.
Follow these instructions:

NOTE: If you are going to use a network drive to hold
temporary files, or to install PHONE to, be sure you
have proper rights to create new directories and
delete files.

To install to F: drive, and use F: drive to hold temporary
files, follow these steps.
------------------------------------------------------------
1) Create a directory called F:\PHONE.INS
------------------------------------------------------------
TYPE ACTION
════ ════════════════════════════════
F: puts you in you F: drive
CD\ takes you to root directory
MD PHONE.INS creates new directory

To use another drive, just type that instead of F:

------------------------------------------------------------
2) copy necessary files to the new directory
------------------------------------------------------------
COPY A:phone301.exe copies phone301.exe to F:\phone.ins
COPY A:readme copies readme to F:\phone.ins
COPY A:install.bat copies install.bat to F:\phone.ins

If your compressed PHONE files are on a different drive,
substitute that for A: (For example COPY B:phone301.exe)

------------------------------------------------------------
3) Expand compressed files
------------------------------------------------------------
PHONE301 expands self extracting files

------------------------------------------------------------
4) Run the PHONE install program
------------------------------------------------------------
PHONE INSTALL starts PHONE in install mode

Follow instructions to install or to upgrade.

When you leave the install program, you may want to delete
the temporary files and directory. If so, follow these steps.
------------------------------------------------------------
5) Delete temporary files and directory
------------------------------------------------------------
CD\PHONE.INS puts you in the phone.ins directory
DEL *.* deletes all files
CD\ takes you to root directory
RD phone.ins deletes phone.ins directory
=======================================================================
PHONE DOES NOT alter your computer set-up in any way. You should
have a CONFIG.SYS file in your root directory which has, as a
minimum, the following 2 lines:
FILES=39 (or a higher odd number)
BUFFERS=8 (or a higher number)
IF that file doesn't exist, or the 2 lines are not in it, you
should use a text editor to create the file and/or add the 2
lines.
Before using PHONE, it is highly recommended that you read the
manual, which is in the file called PHONE.DOC. You can print
the manual by typing the following from the DOS prompt in the
directory where your PHONE files are located:
COPY PHONE.DOC PRN
Be sure your printer is ready before typing the command. The
PHONE.DOC file contains additional information about installing
PHONE, using it, and possible errors you may encounter.
NOTE: A printed manual will be supplied when you register PHONE.
To use PHONE, just type: PHONE from the DOS prompt.
THANK YOU for trying out our SHAREWARE product. We hope you find
it a helpful addition to your software library, and will send in
your registration. We appreciate any feedback you may have for
us on the PHONE program, both from registered and unregistered
users.
