NewLife Statement of Faith
We believe in the verbal inspiration of the Bible, both the
Old and New Testaments; the Trinity of the Godhead; the
Creation of man by the direct act of God; the Fall of man
and his need for redemption; the Deity, Incarnation and
Virgin Birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; His
vicarious atonement for the sins of mankind by the shedding
of His blood on the Cross; the resurrection of His body from
the tomb; His ascension into heaven; His personal imminent
return; the Existence of the literal devil who is our
adversary; a literal heaven for the redeemed and a literal
hell for the lost; the infallible rule of interpretation of
Scripture to be Scripture itself; and the requirement of
implicit obedience to the expressed command of Christ as the
standard by which he will judge our love to Him.

Greeting In Jesus Name!
I would like to being by wishing everyone a very happy
New Year. I still can't believe that 1992 is over and we are
already into the second month of 1993. Guess the old adage
"Time flies when you are having fun" should be applied here,
however, in my case it has been work.
There have been many changes within the NewLife Network
since our last newsletter in October of 1992. Buggs has
retired from the Navy, our dear Brother Randy has had some
major victories in his life and we praise God for that.
Buggs also had major surgery on his leg and God heard the
prayers of his people all across the country while the
surgery was being done. And don't ya know, God had one of
His own children doing the surgery.
We have had some new nodes come online since our last
newsletter. IHS, Lucky Hughs from Norco, California; TWANNA,
William Clinger from Thorton, Pennsylvania; and INFORM, John
Custer from Daly City, California. WELCOME ABOARD!!!!!
Some things however, never change. There have been hard
drive crashes, message bases lost, mail packets lost,
systems hang up and oh the list goes on. However, God has
been good to all of us and we give Him the Glory.
Your Sister and Fellow Servant in Christ

FROM ON HIGH
I've thought a lot about what to write for the newsletter,
but I think this says it better than I can.. It was taken
from them Murray Hill Baptist Church bulletin located in
Jacksonville, FL, dated January 17, 1992.

THE DANGERS OF CONTENTMENT....
Satisfaction with life is a goal which most of us seek, and
rightfully so. There is a need for us to find our place in
God's plan and to have a sense of accomplishment in life.
Achievements and success in life, however, are very fleeting
and soon evaporate unless there is a continuation of
creative activity at the center of one's life. Contentment
with short-term accomplishments can prevent us from
responding to the long-term joys of a life in partner ship
with God.
We face a number of serious transitions in life which cause
us some difficulty because they act as high water marks and
give us the impression that we "have arrived." Graduation
from high school is one. For 12 years we anticipate that
moment, and when it arrives we celebrate only to discover
that there is very little satisfaction to be had -- life
still lies ahead.
The search for a career in life culminates in real
excitement when one finds that place where he or she can
exercise their gifts and skills, but that moment dissipates
quickly into the demanding grind of daily responsibilities.
The finding of a mate, the bearing of children, both long
term goals for most of us, turns into an on-going
responsibility which demands far more for us than we had
imagined.
The final arrival at retirement, that long-awaited time when
one can step back and enjoy the benefits of a life-time of
hard work, becomes a challenge far greater than we ever
expected.
The truth is we can never be content to stop anywhere along
the way in life. Those who understand this concept have
discovered that true contentment involves the entire process
of life.
Having a partnership with God through Jesus Christ enables
us to set short-term goals, work hard to achieves them, and
move on to even greater challenges and opportunities. To be
satisfied with these short-term accomplishments is to cheat
oneself of the great joy of the whole of life. Enjoyment
comes in moving from one exciting period in life to the next
anticipating the expanding horizons of life. The final step
in life's process, death, then becomes a much more positive
matter than we have ever thought it could be.
THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS
by Peggy Flint
Sometimes it is so hard to find good books for kids. I used
to wonder about what was good. I have done a lot of reading
and have come up with some favorite "safe" authors and
series of books for my children. The best part is that my
kids actually like to read these books and learn.
This month's focus is on a series of books. It is called:
The Magic School Bus series.
To my knowledge, there are 5 books in this series put out by
Scholastic books. This is a new series which deals with
science topics. What makes this series of books so wonderful
is that it is colorful and exciting to the children, and
they will read these books over and over and over again.
(Even my child who hates to reread books will read them over
again.)
The books focus on Ms. Frizzle and her class of students. I
believe that they are in third grade. Ms. Frizzle likes to
give her children hands-on experience in science, and she
has found a unique way to do this. She takes them on field
trips in a "magic" school bus.
No, she doesn't say and spells to make the school bus go
anywhere. It is just "different". With this school bus, the
students of Ms. Frizzle's class have been able to explore
the center of the earth, outer space, the town's waterworks,
and inside a human body. Each time, they have been able to
explore these areas because the school bus shrinks, flies,
turns into a drill and steam shovel, and floats. Oh yes,
there is another book where the students explore the bottom
of the ocean - but we do not have it YET - so I can't tell
you about it. My children remind me often that we do not
have it (it's not in paperback yet). One of the things about
these books which makes them so educational is the student's
reports on some of the pages. These are miniature reports
featured on the sides of the pictures. My daughter just
reminded me that you can also learn from the stories. My
son was quick to point out that they are not true (AHA - he
knows the difference between fact and fantasy - we have
achieved one reading goal). I have been informed that Ms.
Frizzle dresses funny, and that helps to tell the children
what is coming up next. (AHA - we also are predicting the
outcome - another reading goal). These books would be
wonderful to use to teach sequencing skills.
These books are colorful, educational, fun and downright
addicting. May Scholastic books add to this line on a
regular basis. From 1 to 100 my children rate this book a
100 (Eric) and 99 (Robin). Robin says that the only thing
wrong with this is that it isn't true - and she's not in
the class. These books are written by Joanna Cole and can
be ordered through any bookstore (I used our local Bible
Bookstore). My kids want me to tell you that the GREAT
illustrations are by Bruce Degen. Maybe in the future I'll
have them write a book review .
HOW TO HOME SCHOOL
by Peggy Flint
How to Home School: A Practical Approach by Gayle Graham
As many people know, this is our fourth year of home
schooling, and it has been the most difficult for us.
Quitting has often been thought of as an option. BUT, I
received this book over the Christmas break and it has
helped me get more organized and feel more confident about
what we are doing and why we are doing it.
First of all, Gayle Graham has been home schooling for at
least 9 years. She has had experience teaching multi-level
grades, for she has had students from junior high down to
toddler levels. I believe that this adds to her
credentials. (She also had all the "right" credentials to
teach - but she says that she thinks she has overcome that
problem). One of the things that Gayle discusses is that our
children are all individuals. We know that - don't we - BUT
somehow we so often forget it. What one child did at 6,
another child may not do till 7 or 8. Of course, boys and
girls differ even if they are the same ages. Gayle makes a
point of saying that when we stress the right brain/left
brain approach to education - we oftentimes find ourselves
limiting the child to working with "half a brain", thereby
limiting their true potential. Another point that Gayle
makes early in the book - is that in order to be successful
in home schooling - we must be organized. She helps us
learn how to do this by providing sample forms to help us
organize our housework by days of the week, and our
schedules so we know the best time for "school" due to
weekly music lessons, etc. She stresses the need for 2
SEPARATE organizers - one for home and one for school. I
had been trying to combine them both into the same organizer
- NO WONDER I WAS GOING CRAZY!!
Gayle is a firm believer in the unit study approach to
education. Her book deals with teaching reading (without
workbooks even) and writing. Can you believe that daily
practice in writing will help to build writing skills? So
simple - yet how often do we have our child write? She also
deals with teaching math and making it practical. To me
though, the most helpful section was on planning unit
studies. Gayle recommends spending four days a week on
reading which is related to the unit, then have one day be a
"project" day every week. So often, I have looked at
curriculums and been "bogged down" by looking at the
suggested projects, wondering when I'd fit them in. The
project day is for projects and games only - no book work.
I like that idea, and I believe that I will try to start
implementing that in my home school. Two things that Gayle
said that really touched me were: "I need to measure success
by what I did, not by what I did not do...I must trust that
God is in control of available time and look at the positive
- what we did do!" and "Do what you can with the time that
you have! How can we do that? Allow God to speak the
day's/week's/season's priorities and shoot for them."
Would I buy this book again? Yes, Yes, and YES again. In
my library of motivational books this is my number one
choice that I grab for time and time again. Gayle has truly
given me a practical approach to home schooling. Thank you
Gayle!!
Gayle's book is available from the Elijah Company, Lifetime
Books and Gifts, and from Gayle herself for $18.95. If you
order from Gayle, don't forget to enclose $3.00 for shipping
and handling and ask for her free newsletter. To order from

SOFTWARE REVIEW
by Ken Cooper
I downloaded Envision Publisher recently and took a look at
It seems like a very promising shareware DTP program.
However, I was very impressed by some features and less
impressed in others.
First, it LOOKS great. It has an attractive interface,
complete with 3-D buttons. Very intuitive. Has both a menu
bar and icons for quick access of features.
Second, it seems like a fairly complete publishing solution
for someone looking for an inexpensive yet powerful program.
It includes an impressive set of drawing tools, including
bezier curves.
Third, for all you get, the price is good. Registration is
around $70.
Now the stuff I wish were a little different--
I was running it on a 286 with 1 meg RAM and it took a while
to load and flow text. Seems like it might be a little
happier on a 386 class machine... However, it DID run and do
the job.
Import/Export filters--Envision only imports PCX, so you
have to use something like HiJaak if you want to import any
graphics in a different format. I realize the current
release is version 1.0, so more filters are probably coming.
I would like to see support for TIFF, CGM, and EPS. Text
filters I'd like to see include MS Word, WordPerfect, RTF,
and ASCII (would strip CRs and LFs).
Looks like the font format is propriety. Would like to see a
more common format. Then, programs like FontMonger could
convert Type 1 or TrueType for use in Envision.
For budget desktop publishing, I like GeoWorks Ensemble. It
isn't perfect, but for about $120 it gives you: an
attractive multitasking windowing environment using the
Motif interface (widely used on Unix workstations),
scaleable fonts, and a group of productivity tools that can
be very friendly and useful. It doesn't have the software
Windows does, but it is written in assembly, so it works
even on an XT with 640 and a hard disk. Version 2 will soon
be released, along with software development tools. Many
more commercial programs should be available in the near
future.
GLOBAL GLANCE Jan 1, 1993
BEHIND THE SCENES IN SOMALIA (camou-Claus in a four-wheel
drive)Many thought Santa had come in camouflage this year.
Americans can be justifiably proud of our servicemen and
women deeply involved in safeguarding supply lines to
starving Somalies. Meanwhile we need to look behind the
media hype and beyond the much publicized Marine landing on
the shores near Mogadishu.
The estimated U.S. contingent is 30,000 men. Our stated
objective of protecting food supplies and insuring safe
delivery to those in need could have been accomplished with
less than a third of that number. Surely 5,000 highly
trained and well equipped troops, backed up by helicopter
air support from an offshore carrier in the Indian Ocean,
could put the bandits and warring clans on notice: We're
coming through. Do not interfere." As it is, with
Operation Restore Hope, we're using a sledgehammer to swat a
fly. Which raises the question: "Is there something more?"
First of all, look at your map. Somalia is located on the
'horn of Africa.' This and the Cape of Good Hope, around
South Africa at the southern tip, are the two most strategic
points on the continent. Here is an excellent position from
which to control world shipping where 20,000 ships a year
pass through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.
Second, consider Iran. Now that her old enemy Iraq has been
humiliated in the Gulf War last year ('91) she is in a
position to extend Islamic fundamentalism to Egypt and
Sudan. Remember the old mid-East proverb, "You can't make
peace without Syria or war without Egypt"? If Egypt remains
moderate then the war option does not exist for the Arabs.
During the last two years, the Iranians have stepped up
their training and financing of Islamic fundamentalist in
Sudan, who have in turn increased their infiltration into
Upper Egypt. This endangers the whole Madrid peace talk
process.
Third. We know about Iran's intentions, now consider who is
arming Iran to help make those intentions a reality.
Traditionally we have thought of Iran as simply being 'a
thorn in our side' in the Persian Gulf. Perhaps we've been
looking in the wrong direction. It is the Red Sea we should
be watching. The alignment between Libya, Ethiopia, Iran
and Sudan in the fight against Sudan's Christian minority in
the south, has added significantly to the threat faced by
Egypt. Remember, UN Secretary-General Boutros-Ghali is an
Egyptian.
In return for the help given to the (Muslim) Sudan
government in suppressing the Christians in the south, Iran
has been given access to Port Sudan, the most important Red
Sea port in the country. In addition, Iran has use of an
army base in the Geleit Hills north of Khartoum for training
Hezbollah and Egyptian Islamic terrorists. In the past,
Ethiopia was an ally of the Christian minority in the south
of Sudan. Now, under the communists, it has joined with
Libya and Iran in the slaughter of south Sudanese
Christians.
In November a Russian Kilo-class submarine passed through
the Suez Canal on its way to Iran. It is one of three sold
recently by Russia to Iran.
Almost daily reports reach the West of a continuing arms
build-up in Iran. A North Korean ship arrived earlier with
100 Scud missiles, each with a range of 200 miles. Some of
this shipment will be passed on to Syria. This consignment
is in addition to 250 missiles already received from North
Korea, china and Russia. Altogether ten ballistic missile
systems, including five Silkworm systems have been delivered
to Iran recently.
In spite of our Most Favored Nation status bestowed on
China, Beijing and Tehran have signed "a massive arms deal
including: 38 warplanes." Remember, Iran also received 115
combat aircraft gratis from Iraq, flown there for safety
during the gulf War .
In all probability, sending such a large contingent of
troops to Somalia is more than a grand display of
humanitarian action, that happened to coincide with
Christmas, but rather a response to the increasing challenge
posed to Egypt by Iran in the Re d Sea. That response has
found much favor in public opinion for the twilight days of
the Bush Administration. For President-elect Bill Clinton
it will invoke a dread of being sucked once again into
confrontation with Iran. He will not want to suffer, at the
hands of Tehran, the same fate of his democratic
predecessor, Jimmy Carter.
WHAT WE MIGHT SEE IN '93 Traditionally the January issue of
G2 has an article in the "Watch For' or "What's in Store'
category for the new year ahead. This is a hard one to
call, but we'll just say "It looks like.' We've been
promised 'change' but not all change is for the better.
therefore I sincerely hope I'm wrong, but IT LOOKS LIKE...
(1) Congressman Les Aspin (who vetoed the B-1) is the
Clinton/Clinton choice for Secretary of Defense. This is the
same Mr. Aspin that seriously suggested we should carve $1
billion out of our defense budget and give it to Moscow to
help Russia get through last winter (G2 10/91). With the
proposed admission of homosexuals to our armed forces it
looks like we may wind up with an emasculated, effeminized
military, unable to respond to anything but its gonadal
urges.
(2) Now that elections in Serbia are over and communist
President Milosevic retains power, it looks like fighting
will resume between Croatia and Serbia. It could start as
early as next month when the UN mandate, protecting Serb
enclaves in the republic runs out. Croatian leader Franjo
Tudjman is hoping that simultaneous fighting in Kosovo will
begin, thus opening a second front for Belgrade and focusing
world attention on the widening Balkan conflict that could
involve Greece and much of the Muslim world. Milosevic is
sending armor south and would probably welcome an escalation
that would force Greece to side with Serbia and end his
isolation. (3) It looks like Germany and Japan may obtain
permanent seats on the UN Security council this year.
China's president, Yang Shangkun has urged Chinese military
leaders to back his support for German efforts in this
direction. Tokyo's massive investment of technology in Red
Chins has already earned Beijing's endorsement.
