The Intel SatisFAXtion board is normally used with three layers of Intel
software.
SATISFAX.SYS loads in the CONFIG.SYS file and manages the SatisFAXtion
hardware.
CASMGR.EXE loads in the AUTOEXEC.BAT or from the DOS prompt and manages
the reception and transmission of FAXes. There is an API to CASMGR that
is used by the other pieces of Intel software.
FAX.EXE or FAXPOP.EXE loads in the AUTOEXEC.BAT or from the DOS prompt
and provides a user interface. CASMGR can receive FAXes without FAX.EXE
or FAXPOP.EXE.
The three pieces of software are loaded in the above order. DESQview
and DESQview/X users are likely to run into one of the following two
problems.
1) If CASMGR is loaded before DESQview and FAX/FAXPOP is loaded inside
a DESQview window, the system is likely to crash if any multitasking is
going on. (FAXPOP will crash the system only on its Events screen,
whereas FAX is lethal whenever it is loaded and there is multitasking.)
Because there is always some multitasking with the server and the window
manager in DESQview/X, FAX, and FAXPOP can cause crashes in that
environment even with no other window open.
2) If CASMGR and FAX/FAXPOP are both loaded into a DESQview window, it
is also necessary to load the Quarterdeck utility HOOKINT.COM in the
window before the Intel software. Even so, FAX transmission or
reception can abort with this configuration if there is too much
multitasking going on.
Depending on the user's needs, one of two configurations might produce
acceptable results with the following precautions:
1) CASMGR LOADED BEFORE DESQVIEW. If FAX/FAXPOP is not loaded in a
DESQview window, CASMGR can be loaded before DESQview and can receive
FAXes reliably in background while the user works in other programs in
DESQview. The user can either: a) use FAX/FAXPOP outside of DESQview
after the FAX has arrived; or b) use FAX/FAXPOP inside DESQview when
no other window is active. To insure that no multitasking occurs when
FAX/FAXPOP is loaded inside DV, it is recommended that the DESQview
window that loads FAX/FAXPOP be set up with "Shares CPU in Foreground"
set to N and "Runs in Background" set to N. This window must then not
be brought to foreground when other programs need to operate in
background. Because DESQview/X is always multitasking to some extent,
FAX/FAXPOP should not be used at all in DESQview/X when CASMGR is loaded
before DESQview/X.
2) CASMGR LOADED IN A DESQVIEW WINDOW. The document HOOKINT.DOC (which
is part of the HOOKINT.ZIP file available on the Quarterdeck Bulletin
Board) describes how to use the file HOOKINT.COM to make it possible to
load CASMGR in a DESQview window. FAX/FAXPOP can then be used in the
same window while multitasking is going on, but the user is likely to
get errors and aborted FAX transmissions and receptions if too many
windows are using processor time. CASMGR is 5.4K in size, so other
DESQview partitions will be slightly larger using this method than they
would if CASMGR was loaded before DESQview.
