  23. For these examples of a manual installation the original boot
  24. partition is assumed to be lettered C:.  If the boot partition is
  25. labeled other than C:, please replace "C:" in the examples below
  26. with the drive letter representing the boot partition.
  27.  
  28. BACKUP THE HARD DISK BEFORE TRYING THE FOLLOWING.  ALSO, have a
  29. copy of the present operating system's CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT
  30. handy for reference.  A full understanding of the STACKER 2.0 disk
  31. compression utility is recommended before attempting the following
  32. steps.  It is also recommended that the security feature of DR DOS
  33. not be installed until the user is sure that DR DOS and Stacker are
  34. working properly after installation.
  35.  
  36. INSTRUCTIONS
  37.  
  38. 1. Using DISKCOPY, make a backup of the DR DOS 6.0 STARTUP
  39. diskette.
  40.  
  41. 2. Reboot with the DR DOS backup STARTUP diskette.  Eventually the
  42. drive will stop turning at the first installation screen.
  43.      
  44. 3. Break out of the installation by pressing <F10> and choosing
  45. "Exit to DR DOS".
  46.  
  47. 4. From the A: prompt type EDITOR CONFIG.SYS to edit the CONFIG.SYS
  48. on this backup diskette.
  49.  
  50. 5. Add the following lines to the END of the Config.sys file:
  51.  
  52.      DEVICE=C:\STACKER\STACKER.COM C:\STACVOL.DSK
  53.      DEVICE=C:\STACKER\SSWAP.COM C:\STACVOL.DSK /SYNC
  54.     
  55. These additions will make the DR DOS 6.0 INSTALL program "Stacker
  56. Aware". This means that the DR DOS INSTALL program will now
  57. recognize Stacker volumes, as well as uncompressed volumes.
  58.  
  59. 6. Remove the lines: DEVICE=\SSTORDRV.SYS and DEVICE=\DEVSWAP.COM 
  60. from this same CONFIG.SYS file.  This will disable SuperStor, DR
  61. DOS's disk compression utility, from being loaded from the backup
  62. STARTUP diskette.
  63.  
  64. 7. Save the changes to CONFIG.SYS by performing a CTRL-K and
  65. pressing X to Save and Exit.  For additional information regarding
  66. DR DOS's EDITOR program, please see the DR DOS 6.0 User Guide.

  68. Note: Remember that the DR DOS backup STARTUP diskette is now
  69. Stacker aware. If the computer were to be rebooted from this DR DOS
  70. backup STARTUP diskette, it should notice the Stacker drives
  71. loading and swapping the appropriate drive letters.  Prepare to
  72. determine which drive letter is mounting as the Stacker
  73. uncompressed volume (which drive is swapping with C:). Do this by
  74. watching Stacker as it mounts:
  75.  
  76.      Swapped drives C: and __: 
  77.  
  78. FILL in the above blank, and all of the below blanks (underscores),
  79. with the drive letter representing the uncompressed boot partition
  80. that swaps with C:.
  81.  
  82. 8. Reboot with the DR DOS backup STARTUP diskette and note the swap
  83. drive as explained in the NOTE above.  Eventually the drive will
  84. stop turning at the first installation screen.
  85.  
  86. 9. Break out of the installation by pressing <F10> and choosing
  87. "Exit to DR DOS".
  88.  
  89. 10. From the A: prompt type 
  90.      SYS __: 
  91. This will transfer the proper boot files from the installation
  92. diskette in drive A: to the uncompressed boot partition.  Now the
  93. uncompressed drive (__:) is a DR DOS 6.0 boot drive.
  94.  
  95. 11. Also from the A: prompt type 
  96.      SYS C:.  
  97. This will transfer the proper boot files from the installation
  98. diskette in drive A: to the C: Stacker partition.  Most
  99. importantly, this will create a new DR DOS Boot Sector if the hard
  100. disk was previously formatted under another operating system.
  101.  
  102. 12. Move to drive __: and create a DR DOS subdirectory by typingMD
  103. DRDOS.
  104.  
  105. 13. Move to drive C: and create a DR DOS subdirectory by typingMD
  106. DRDOS. 
  107.  
  108. Note: this is not the same drive as step 12.
  109.  
  110. 14. Move back to A: and copy all of the files from all of the DR
  111. DOS 6.0 diskettes into the C:\DRDOS subdirectory.  This is
  112. accomplished by typing 
  113.      COPY *.* C:\DRDOS 
  114. from the A: prompt. Do this with each individual DR DOS diskette. 
  115. Use either the original STARTUP or the backup STARTUP diskette.
  116.  
  117. 15. Move to the C:\DRDOS subdirectory by typing 
  118.      C: 
  119. and then 
  120.      CD\DRDOS.
  121.  
  122. 16. Delete COMMAND.COM, CONFIG.SYS, and AUTOEXEC.BAT from this DR
  123. DOS subdirectory.  These files will not be needed in this
  124. directory.
  125.      DEL <FILENAME>.
  126.  
  127. 17. Rename INSTALL.EXE to SETUP.EXE. 
  128.      REN INSTALL.EXE SETUP.EXE.
  129.  
  130. 18. Run SETUP by typing 
  131.      SETUP, 
  132. Then install each portion of DR DOS.
  133.  
  134. Note: DO NOT install the SuperStor portion of DR DOS.  SUPERSTOR
  135. AND STACKER CANNOT BE USED TOGETHER.
  136.  
  137. 19. Once DR DOS is installed and configured, choose EXIT TO DR DOS.
  138. DO NOT REBOOT THE COMPUTER!
  139.  
  140. 20. From the C:\DRDOS subdirectory type 
  141.      EDITOR C:\CONFIG.SYS.
  142.  
  143. 21. Add the following lines to the end of the CONFIG.SYS file:
  144.  
  145.      DEVICE=C:\STACKER\STACKER.COM C:\STACKVOL.DSK
  146.      DEVICE=C:\STACKER\SSWAP.COM C:\STACVOL.DSK /SYNC
  147.      
  148. These additions will make your DR DOS hard disk installation
  149. "Stacker Aware". 
  150.  
  151. 22. Also, write down any of the NEW (DR DOS) drivers which are
  152. loaded prior to the last two lines added above.  
  153.  
  154. Note: This is why it is recommended that a copy of the old
  155. CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT be made. 
  156.  
  157. Compare the old CONFIG.SYS with the new CONFIG.SYS DR DOS created
  158. and determine which drivers DR DOS has added. Look for lines which
  159. begin with a DEVICE, HIDEVICE, INSTALL, or HIINSTALL command. 
  160. REMEMBER the two lines will be loaded from this __: drive.  This is
  161. why it is necessary to make sure they are in the DRDOS subdirectory
  162. on the __: drive for CONFIG.SYS to find them.
  163.  
  164. 23. Save the changes to CONFIG.SYS by performing a CTRL-K and then
  165. press X to Save and Exit.  For additional information regarding DR
  166. DOS's EDITOR program, please see the DR DOS 6.0 User Guide.

  168. 24. Copy all of the files noted in step #22 above to the DRDOS
  169. subdirectory on __: (__:\DRDOS).  
  170.      COPY <FILENAME> __:\DRDOS.
  171.        
  172. 25. Move back to the root directory by typing a CD \.  From here,
  173. copy CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT to the _: root directory (__: \).
  174.      COPY <FILENAME> __: \.
  175.  
  176. 26. Stacker and DR DOS are now installed.  You may now reboot your
  177. machine.
  178.  
  179. NOTE: If Stacker detects changes in your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS
  180. during boot, let Stacker make the changes by pressing a "Y".
