This file contains the complete text of the "Star Trek: The Third
Generation" storyline, which originates from Shadowlands BBS in
London, Ontario, Canada. It was up-to-date as of 93/01/01.
NOTES ON VER. 2.0
-----------------
I jumped up the version number on this one, not because so much has
been changed or added as because I intend it to be the last ST:3GEN
file. Having brought the story to some sort of workable conclusion
(though certainly not tying up all the loose ends), I intend to step
out of Trek writing and get working on my novels again. Thanks to
all those who have enjoyed and supported ST:3GEN over the past two
years. "Live long... and prosper."
Observant folks will notice that in this version, ship names have
been properly underlined, some minor chronological errors have been
corrected, and the Klingon ship formerly called _Picard_ has been
renamed the _Pach'Iw_ in the interests of continuity (not to mention
plausibility).
NOTES ON VER. 1.5
-----------------
For this version, which contains a fair amount of new text, I
separated the originally intertwined stories of Episode 7 and
turned them into Episode 7, "Into the Fire", and Episode 8,
"Captain's (Rotten) Holiday". However, the stories take place
concurrently.
NOTES ON VER. 1.2
-----------------
This version has undergone a complete edit (yes, again). Besides
the most obvious change, that of dividing the story up into
"episodes" (brief descriptions of each are to be found in the new
file EPISODES.TXT), I have corrected all the spelling errors I could
find, and some of the punctuation and grammar errors. Numerous
continuity flubs such as inconsistent stardates, slavishly
derivative ship names (except for one, alas), and a little confusion
early in the storyline about the use of "sir" and "ma'am" have been
corrected. Some new material has been added to the end of the
storyline, for those of you who have already read the rest.
On another note, it has occurred to me that new readers of this
storyline might find themselves troubled by certain apparently
derivative elements and characters in 3GEN. For example, it might
seem at first that the character of Nikctalos D'pyrann in particular
is an unoriginal plot device, considering the appearance of a
similar sympathetic Borg character, Hugh, in the TNG episode "I,
Borg". But in this and several other apparent rip-offs, it was
actually 3GEN which was ahead of TNG, not the other way around. The
character of Nikctalos was created for 3GEN long before the "I,
Borg" episode was filmed. Any similarities in temperament between
the characters are accidental. (Unless somebody at Paramount is
reading 3GEN, of course, which I somehow doubt.) Likewise, the
character of Salek was created for the storyline several months
before "Unification" was broadcast for the first time. Now I have
learned that "Deep Space Nine" will have as one of its cast members
a young doctor, roguish and adventure-loving, seemingly rather like
our own James N'dok who has been a fixture of 3GEN since its
inception in early 1991. Go figure.
NOTES ON VER. 1.1
-----------------
The first version of the file (Ver. 1.0) had been substantially
edited in an effort to get the plot moving more quickly, but after
some deliberation and at the encouragement of others I decided to
reinstate most of what I'd chopped out. Restored is the initial
tension between Gabriele and Jack and the arrivals of James,
Barnabas, Mac and Maverint, as well as a few more biographical
details. Some material (not much) has been added to the end of the
story as well since the last update of 92/08/22, and the file has
now been given a version number to help readers keep track.
As before, the story as a whole has been slightly edited for
continuity, and a few of the more rampant absurdities (though by no
means all, as some have noted) corrected.
All editing and compiling of the storyline was done by Rebecca J.
Anderson.
