├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ HeadLine: Robber Took More Than Money │
│ │
│ Story: The owner of a gas station was startled when he heard someone open │
│ the cash drawer at his establishment. Working under a car, he │
│ quickly pushed himself out from beneath the car and saw a man tak- │
│ ing the cash from his drawer. He raced in front of the man to stop│
│ him. A struggle took place. The owner reached under the counter │
│ and pulled out a pistol, the robber grabbed it. The fight contin- │
│ ued. The owner then reached for and grabbed a pair of pliers. He │
│ took aim and threw the pliers at the robber. He missed. The rob- │
│ ber retrieved the pliers, placed them in his pocket along with the │
│ pistol and cash then ran away. │
│ HeadLine: Man Wants To Get Arrested │
│ Story: A man was arrested, just as he wanted to be, for stealing his │
│ neighbor's lawn furniture. The man wanted to be arrested so he │
│ could be put into jail with the man convicted of stabbing and kill-│
│ his four children. The man's effort to get arrested succeeded; │
│ however his attempt to get the man who had killed his children was │
│ not successful. The killer had been moved to prison and death row │
│ the same morning the man was placed in jail. │

│ Phrase Craze! Page 16 │
├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ * Elbow grease: to put some energy into an activity or job. This phrase │
│ comes to us from the action of polishing furniture. In the seventeenth │
│ century in the Dictionary of the Termos of the Canting Crew, this phrase │
│ first appeared. │
│ * A Lead-pipe cinch: A sure certainty or something considered to be easy. │
│ Originally the phrase was only cinch, being taken from the Spanish word │
│ cincha, a saddle-girth. Lead pipe was added to phrase only sixty years │
│ ago. The only thing assumed by experts is that lead pipe was added to │
│ phrase to show a sure, absolute thing, since a cinch is made of nothing │
│ more than cotton and a lead pipe is certainly more secure and stronger. │
│ * Ace in the hole: describing something that is held in reserve or that │
│ is undisclosed. The expression, no doubt, comes from the stud poker │
│ game. The first card being dealt down while the remaining four cards │
│ are dealt up. A player who was betting high would say to have an ace │
│ in the hole, meaning they probably had the best hand as a result. The │
│ phrase began so long ago that no one is certain of its earliest use. │
│ * To get cold feet: To desire to withdraw from an action, to change one's │
│ mind. The phrase was first used in Ben Jonson's Volpone in 1605. │
│ There has been much controversy over the use of this phrase and were it │
│ first originated however it appears to come from Italy. │

│ │
│ This was the fourth and final full day of my trip to London. Rod had │
│ already decided, because of my interest in archeology, we should visit │
│ Stoney Littleton, Barrows, chambered tomb. This is an area that has │
│ been dated back to the Neolithic period. It is an underground cavern │
│ of tombs. As we walked through the cavern of tombs, the wind whistled │
│ through the tunnel that walked. I turned around quickly, for I am │
│ certain I heard my name called. When I saw no one there, I turned back │

│ heard my name. I must have jumped at foot and I screamed. Audrey │
│ stopped in her tracks and turned to look at me, saying "What's wrong? │
│ Are you okay?" I did not answer, I turned around to see who had grabbed │
│ my shoulder, nothing was there. No person, nothing. I turned back to │
│ Audrey and said, "I'm alright. The atmosphere here is getting the best │
│ of my imagination I guess." We walked on, catching up with Rod, who by │
│ now was at the other end of the tomb. I knew it was not Rod playing │
│ some trick. He made no mention of it either. If he had been playing a │
│ joke he would have said something, if no other reason than to savor the │
│ moment. And besides, how could he have had something grab my shoulder │
│ and not have anything there. At the time I rejected my intuitive │
│ feelings, they were, that something did indeed call me and touch me, │
│ and I felt it was something from the past. I convinced myself it was │
│ the wind blowing through the tomb, the atmosphere and my imagination, │
│ nothing more. Rationalizing the entire sensation. │
│ │
│ Things like this happen frequently on digs. Part of it is the │
│ excitement of the dig. Part because of the thrill of unveiling a │
│ previous history and life style. I've even seen people on digs run in │

│ horror from a newly opened tomb, because they were convinced there was │
│ someone in the tomb. The curse of King Tutankhamen helps encourage │
│ people to have these sensations. Since 1922 when King Tut's tomb was │
│ opened, and the members of the expedition started falling prey to 'odd' │
│ circumstances of death, the workers and guides have maintained the │
│ believe that there is a curse with each tomb and each mummy. There are │
│ more curses attached to tombs and caves than there are tombs or caves. │
│ But the eeriness of the moment, when opening a tomb that has not been │
│ opened for several thousand years, does not leave you. It goes with │
│ the territory, and is a common experience on digs. Perhaps this was │
│ another warning of what was yet to come. And if I had heeded this │
│ warning, the rest of my trip would have been to stay in Great Britain │
│ and forego Austria and the Black Forest. Conceivably, this is merely │
│ hindsight and not a realistic assessment of the events that occurred. │
│ │
│ I would say all and all I had a very enjoyable stay in Great Britain. │
│ The events at the park and at Stoney Littleton were quickly forgotten. │
│ When you are in country such as England it is best to dismiss the │

│ I was to leave in the morning, flying from Heathrow to Salzburg at │

│ The ques or lines are very long at Heathrow. Audrey and Rod live in │
│ Salisbury, which is quite a drive to Heathrow, and we would be leaving │
│ at the busiest time of the morning so we turned in rather early. It │
│ was 9:00 pm and I lay in bed waiting for sleep. Four days ago I could │

│ reading some more literature on the Black Forest and Austria. Sleep │
│ must of have overtaken me because the next thing I realized it was │
│ morning and the alarm was blaring in my ear. I was packed and ready to │
│ go, so it would be simple to get going. │
│ │
│ We made it to the airport with no problems, despite the traffic. As we │
│ said goodbye Audrey expressed her concern about my leaving. She was │
│ frightened, it was obvious, but there was nothing I could do to change │

│ settled down in my assigned seat and began to reflect on the events of │
│ the past few days. The flight was relatively short and before I knew │
│ it I was in Salzburg. │
│ │
│ The city is quite beautiful. I remembered the first time I saw it was │
│ when I was watching the Winter Olympics, Salzburg was one of the cities │
│ ABC highlighted as an entertainment spot for the Olympic athletes. │
│ They showed us some of the city, I fell hopelessly in love with the │
│ peaceful serenity the city displayed. Time had all but stopped for this │
│ beautiful country town. It appeared to be safe and protected, │
│ surrounded by the beauty of high and sometimes quite dangerous, │
│ mountains. Just what I thought would bring peace and serenity to me │
│ and help put the past year behind me. │
│ │
│ The setting of Salzburg is perfect. It lies between the banks of the │
│ Salzach River and at one point is between two mountains, the │
│ Kapuzinerberg on one shore, the Monchsberg on the other. It is a most │
│ enchanting city. The architecture of Salzburg is of a single style, │

│ Most people associate Salzburg with Mozart. It is the city of the │
│ Mozart Festival. Mozart was born in the city of Salzburg in 1756. In │
│ his 35 years of life, he crammed a prodigious number of compositions. │
│ Though Mozart was the wonder and glory of Europe, Austria and his │
│ native city did not honor him in his lifetime. It was not until 1925 │
│ the Mozart Festival began. │
│ │
│ One location I desired to go was Mozart's home, at Getreidegasse 9, │
│ which has been converted to a museum. A final tribute of homage to the │
│ genius of Salzburg. │
│ │
│ I, along with the other members of the tour group, stayed at │
│ Kaserebrau, Kaigassee 33, not far from Mozartplatz. It is an Inn of │
│ moderate cost, furnished in old Salzburg style. Enchanting, and │
│ lovely, as if no one told the proprietor the twentieth century had │

│ of the eighteenth century. Going on, as if Mozart himself were still │

│ Austrian foods to choose, not even looking at the most delectable │
│ pastries they offered. │
│ │
│ When evening came, I enjoyed dinner, with the rest of the tour group, │

│ somewhat expensive, I would say was well worth the price. │
│ │
│ It was there I met the rest of the tour group. Much to my surprise and │

│ │
│ The other members, a Mrs. Moore, a widow and retired bank teller from │

│ │
│ There is Mr. and Mrs. Bentley. Mr. Bentley is a professor at │

│ │
│ He, on the other hand, is quite a talker. I am not saying he talks to │

│ Mr. Clark and Mr. Prescott got into an argument about the political │
│ climate of American intervention into some area of the world and Great │

│ │
│ Mr. and Mrs. Clark are from Chicago. Mrs. Clark is a computer operator │

│ statement. │
│ │
│ There are twenty four of us in total, this is including Karl, our bus │

│ They are not related, nor married, to each other that is, but have │

│ I spoke briefly to Mr. Prescott. He was heavy in the debate with Mr. │
│ Clark and Mr. Bentley. I asked him if he thought Rod suggesting a │

│ it was an odd coincidence, and then winked at me. I do not know about │

│ │
│ I still found Mr. Prescott terribly charming. He is very British. │
│ This is not intended to be a slur against him, but rather a compliment. │
│ So many of the British people have become Americanized, their heritage │
│ is becoming lost in that Americanization. I, in truth, envy the │
│ British, with all the history they have, it gives them a true sense of │

│ │
│ The average age of the tour group, I would guess, is about fifty five │
│ to maybe sixty five. Mr. Prescott and myself, it appears, are the │

│ │
│ Everyone liked to party, with, possibly, the only exception being Mrs. │

│ │
│ I easily negated invading concepts of paranormal activities. I did not │

│ │
│ "SEVEN (crunch) A.M.!" │
│ │
│ "That's right, seven a.m.! Still want to help, Crunchie?" │
│ The purchasing expert slunk into a sulk but said nothing more. │
│ │
│ "Starting tomorrow, we're staggering office hours," the boss continued. │
│ "It will help lighten traffic and ease the power crunch - no pun │
│ intended. So all of you who are not engaged in something you can't │

│ Grumbling and complaining, the Team Eeeek members rose from their desks │
│ and pulled on their coats. Most of them were through the door when the │
│ boss stepped over to Carpenter's work area. │
│ │
│ "Aren't you leaving, Carp?" │
│ │
│ "I should finish this upgrade before the team comes back. In fact, you │
│ may wanna schedule me for swing shift or graveyard. Most of my work is │
│ on their machines anyway." │
│ │
│ The boss eyed her technician suspiciously knowing his distaste for │
│ isolation and darkness. But she had her own problems and he probably had │
│ his reasons. The Carpenter's reasons were always good reasons. │
│ │
│ "Okay, Carp," the boss said slowly. "Think it over tonight and whatever │
│ you decide, I'll put into the schedule." │
│ │
│ The master technician nodded his thanks and the boss left him, alone, in │
│ the darkened isolation of the Team Eeeek Offices. │

│ "Darn hexadecimals!" │
│ │
│ The technician possessed an engineering degree from Yale, a Master's │
│ Degree in Computer Technology from M.I.T., and three Ph.D.s in assorted │
│ computer hardware fields. But he hated hexadecimals; he claimed they │
│ didn't put any silicone under his fingernails. │
│ │
│ "Stupid programmers! Haven't they ever heard of a straight line?" │
│ │
│ It was late. It was late and he was tired. And he had never had any │
│ patience with the kind of mental processes required to program the │
│ beautiful memory chips and computer boards that he so loved to touch. │
│ │
│ Hand Carpenter the chips and he could connect hair follicles to the sweat │
│ glands on a little toe. But don't ask him to route the signals. No, not │
│ that. Especially at 3 a.m. In the lonely, deserted offices of Eeeek │
│ International. │
│ │
│ He was hungry but time was running out. No telling how much the boss │
│ already knew. │

├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ "I'd better look for another approach," he mumbled. │
│ │
│ Carpenter leafed through the Team's documentation, searching for │
│ something, anything!, that made sense to his purposes. And all the while │
│ he talked to himself - a habit he had only just acquired - of the artful │
│ machinations of his teammates. │
│ │
│ "STOP!" he shouted into the empty room. "Stop! Think! Follow this thing │
│ through like a nerd!" │
│ │
│ The anger in his voice surprised him; he had not realized his own │
│ animosity toward the mysteries of programming. At heart he knew himself │
│ to be a hands-on, shade-tree mechanic who had stumbled onto success in │
│ the land of high-tech. │
│ │
│ As a teen he had restored, rebuilt or repaired everything from crystal │
│ radios to an uncle's Packard. Parts he couldn't purchase, he made on his │
│ father's work bench. Schematics he couldn't find he redesigned. Give him │
│ a wire, give him a bit of solder and a pair of pliers, give him anything │
│ he could FEEL and he would give you the Taj Mahal. │

├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ But THIS! │
│ │
│ "STOP! STOP!" Carpenter cried. │
│ │
│ He had to quell the madness crowding his mind. He was not used to the │
│ mental frustration; nor was he comfortable with the deceit. But he had │
│ started on a journey and he could not go back; it was too late. He had │
│ already altered some of the company's records. │
│ │
│ "Think it through! Think it through!" he told himself. "What kind of mind │
│ would create a mess like this?" │
│ │
│ He was referring to the Eeeek International in-house software. And when │
│ he realized the completeness of his own question, he had the answer. │
│ │
│ "The Team!" │
│ Of course! The Team had created the maze of interconnecting programs, the │
│ most comprehensive data analysis system in the world. But The Team had │
│ also created the most comprehensive security system to protect that │
│ programming. │
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Team Eeeek: The Dawning of An Age - Skills of a Carpenter Page 53 │
├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ So how would somebody get past the security system? │
│ │
│ "I guess there'd be some sort of code," Carp mumbled; but he was warming │
│ to the problem - he could feel it. "Some sort of access pattern." │
│ │
│ He rifled through the pages of the manual in front of him looking for a │
│ title, a heading, anything that suggested access to where he wanted to │
│ go: the logs. │
│ │
│ "At least I've isolated the question," he reminded himself to re-instill │
│ a little self-assurance. │
│ │
│ In truth he had been approaching the problem correctly; the documentation │
│ manuals were beginning to bear that out. For what Carpenter wanted to │
│ accomplish, he required access to the programming which produced the │
│ exhaustive "User Logs" of the Team's computer network. The Logs recorded │
│ every entry on the Network as well as into the sub-directories, databases │
│ and programs. They were that part of the Team's Security System which │
│ were designed and upgraded twice a year to prevent exactly what Carpenter │
│ was trying to do: hack into the system. │
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐

├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ "Hacking!" Carp said. "That's what I'm doing!" │
│ The realization brought him no joy but it did provide a clue. │
│ "I'm trying to hack into the Team Eeeek computer," he told himself. "So │
│ who is the best hacker I know?" │
│ │
│ The question brought an immediate answer: "Neal!" │
│ │
│ Yes...Neal. The physicist was notorious in his youth for walking through │
│ Government and Defense Department security systems and leaving "KillJoy │
│ Was Here!" notes all over sensitive material. After frustrating the heads │
│ of every major branch of government over the course of three years, the │
│ President offered an unconditional pardon to "the Hacker known as │
│ 'KillJoy'" if he would only stop. │
│ │
│ Neal finally turned himself in saying, "It wasn't fun anymore." He was │
│ then offered a job with the CIA which he accepted. │
│ │
│ "What would Neal do?" Carpenter wondered aloud. And then he remembered │
│ the physicist's simple boast on the subject of hacking: "Always let the │
│ program, itself, do the work." │
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Team Eeeek: The Dawning of An Age - Skills of a Carpenter Page 55 │
├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ Well, if he was going to let the program do the work, he would still have │
│ to get in. "THINK!" Carpenter knew from conversations around the office │
│ the Team stored everything in compiled form. He realized that he'd have │
│ to decompile the Logs before he could alter them. "What about the Eeeek │
│ Utilities?" he wondered. But that wouldn't help; he would still need the │
│ source code. "Source code," Carp muttered, flipping through the manual. │
│ When he found the section, his excitement mounted. "If I can't hack the │
│ code, I wonder if I can..." He found a section entitled, "Installing a │
│ Code." With sweaty palms he laid the manual on the desk and began to tap │
│ commands into his computer. "Let's see. First, Control F9." As he worked │
│ his way through the instructions, he took note of a godsend procedure: │
│ "Restoring a Code." Before long his screen presented him with a box. │
│ .------------. │
│ | Enter Code | │
│ `------------' │
│ Nervously Carpenter typed "*.*" and pressed the "Enter" key. With that │
│ done, he returned to the "Access Code?" prompt and typed in the same │
│ "*.*" and there on the screen burst the Security System's User Logs. │
│ Now all he had to do was falsify the company's records. │
│ To be continued. │

│ the company's principals with federal environmental violations relating │
│ to the treatment & disposal of hazardous waste. Those indicted are: │
│ Plas-Chem Coatings Inc., 5220 New Kings Road; Wilmer Rowe, age 50, the │

│ Plas-Chem. If convicted, each individual faces a maximum possible │
│ sentence of up to 25 years imprisonment, fines totaling $750,000, or │

│ coatings, could be fined up to $1.5 million. The indictment alleges that │
│ Rowe, Jones & Plas-Chem violated the Resource Conservation & Recovery Act │
│ between summer of 1991 & 3-18-92, by directing Plas-Chem employees to │
│ transport paint wastes, & sludges to a warehouse at 144 Watts St, │
│ Jacksonville, FL The indictment charges that these substances, which │
│ constitute toxic & ingnitable hazardous wastes, were dumped out on the │
│ warehouse floor. Allegedly, the wastes were later scraped up, placed in │
│ 55-gallon drums, & stored without a permit at the Plas-Chem facility on │
│ New Kings Road in violation of federal law. The indictment also charges │

│ NY, 1-13/US Newswire: The following is a statement by David J. Andrews, │
│ acting president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Planned │
│ Parenthood Action Fund. │
│ │
│ "With its ruling in Bray v. Alexandria Women's Heath Clinic, the U.S. │
│ Supreme Court has abdicated its responsibility to curb mob violence and │
│ protect the welfare of millions of American women. The court has cast │
│ doubt on the ability of federal courts to police the actions of Operation │
│ Rescue and other anti-choice terrorists at family planning centers. │
│ Unencumbered by the threat of federal intervention, these groups will │
│ escalate their vicious campaign of harassment. The timing of this │
│ decision is especially outrageous in light of Operation Rescue's recent │
│ announcement that they plan to disrupt the presidential inaugural │
│ celebration. Planned Parenthood calls on President-elect Clinton to │
│ speak out forcefully and, once in office, take every legal action within │
│ his power to safeguard women. Further, we urge Congress to pass the │
│ Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, legislation that will │
│ supersede the decision in Bray and ensure that women have safe access to │
│ health care. American women will not be deterred from exercising their │
│ fundamental right to make personal and private decisions." │

│ WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Department of Justice │

│ methods for measuring the nicotine and moisture content of smokeless │
│ tobacco products. Smokeless tobacco products include various types of │
│ chewing tobacco and snuff such as loose leaf, plug, twist, and moist or │
│ dry snuff. The research joint venture was formed in response to the │
│ enactment of the Comprehensive Smokeless Tobacco Health Education Act of │
│ 1986, 15 U.S.C. Section 4403, which requires producers of smokeless │
│ tobacco products to file reports as to the nicotine content of their │
│ products and to a request by the Department of Health and Human Services │
│ (HHS) that the companies develop uniform testing methods to report the │
│ nicotine and moisture content of their products. The department's │
│ position was stated in a letter from J. Mark Gidley, Acting Assistant │
│ Attorney General in charge of the Antitrust Division, to counsel for the │
│ joint venture. A file containing the business review request and the │
│ department's response may be examined in the Legal Procedure Unit of the │
│ Antitrust Division, Room 3233, Department of Justice, Washington, D.C. │

│ "Toto" Riina was arrested by a special unit of the Italian Carabinieri. │
│ The investigation by the Italian authorities was assisted by the FBI, │
│ specifically through computerized "age enhanced" photos that were │

│ application of the Face Aging Computer or "Imager" computer which aids │
│ investigators in the search for missing persons & fugitives. The system │
│ offers sophisticated photocomposing & retouching capabilities which │
│ allows an operator to project the future appearance of an adult or child │
│ based upon what is discovered about the aging process through study │
│ combined with artistic skill. In Washington, D.C., Sessions said, "Riina │

│ blow to the Sicilian Mafia. He has been linked by Italian authorities to │

│ Case No. 88-28-CR-T-21(B) U.S. vs. Manuel Antonio Noreiga │
│ Motion to Dismiss │
│ Robert W. Genzman, United States Attorney for the Middle District of │
│ Florida, by and through its undersigned attorney, moves that the above │
│ cause be dismissed without prejudice, in accordance with Rle 48(a), │
│ Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure, for the reason that the defendant │
│ has already been convicted of serious drug trafficking offenses in the │
│ Southern District of Florida and received a 40-year prison sentence. │
│ During the trial of that case, the evidence in this case was introduced │
