----------------------------------------------------------------------------
HeadLine: Robber Took More Than Money

Story: The owner of a gas station was startled when he heard someone open
the cash drawer at his establishment. Working under a car, he
quickly pushed himself out from beneath the car and saw a man tak-
ing the cash from his drawer. He raced in front of the man to stop
him. A struggle took place. The owner reached under the counter
and pulled out a pistol, the robber grabbed it. The fight contin-
ued. The owner then reached for and grabbed a pair of pliers. He
took aim and threw the pliers at the robber. He missed. The rob-
ber retrieved the pliers, placed them in his pocket along with the
pistol and cash then ran away.
HeadLine: Man Wants To Get Arrested
Story: A man was arrested, just as he wanted to be, for stealing his
neighbor's lawn furniture. The man wanted to be arrested so he
could be put into jail with the man convicted of stabbing and kill-
his four children. The man's effort to get arrested succeeded;
however his attempt to get the man who had killed his children was
not successful. The killer had been moved to prison and death row
the same morning the man was placed in jail.

Phrase Craze! Page 16
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Elbow grease: to put some energy into an activity or job. This phrase
comes to us from the action of polishing furniture. In the seventeenth
century in the Dictionary of the Termos of the Canting Crew, this phrase
first appeared.
* A Lead-pipe cinch: A sure certainty or something considered to be easy.
Originally the phrase was only cinch, being taken from the Spanish word
cincha, a saddle-girth. Lead pipe was added to phrase only sixty years
ago. The only thing assumed by experts is that lead pipe was added to
phrase to show a sure, absolute thing, since a cinch is made of nothing
more than cotton and a lead pipe is certainly more secure and stronger.
* Ace in the hole: describing something that is held in reserve or that
is undisclosed. The expression, no doubt, comes from the stud poker
game. The first card being dealt down while the remaining four cards
are dealt up. A player who was betting high would say to have an ace
in the hole, meaning they probably had the best hand as a result. The
phrase began so long ago that no one is certain of its earliest use.
* To get cold feet: To desire to withdraw from an action, to change one's
mind. The phrase was first used in Ben Jonson's Volpone in 1605.
There has been much controversy over the use of this phrase and were it
first originated however it appears to come from Italy.

Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 29
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
At breakfast nothing was said of the events of the night prior. Audrey
merely asked if I had slept well and then almost as an after thought,
asked if I dreamed. I told her I had slept well, but could not
remember if I had dreamed.

I know this was an out to out lie. But Audrey was

obviously worried, I felt it not necessary to make things worse, so I
opted not to say anything more about my dreams.

This was the fourth and final full day of my trip to London. Rod had
already decided, because of my interest in archeology, we should visit
Stoney Littleton, Barrows, chambered tomb. This is an area that has
been dated back to the Neolithic period. It is an underground cavern
of tombs. As we walked through the cavern of tombs, the wind whistled
through the tunnel that walked. I turned around quickly, for I am
certain I heard my name called. When I saw no one there, I turned back
around, Rod and Audrey were now some distance in front of me. I
dismissed the thought of Rod having played another one of his tricks on
me. I continued on, hurrying to catch up with Rod and Audrey. As I
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 30
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
got closer to them I felt a hand grab me on the shoulder and distinctly
heard my name. I must have jumped at foot and I screamed. Audrey
stopped in her tracks and turned to look at me, saying "What's wrong?
Are you okay?" I did not answer, I turned around to see who had grabbed
my shoulder, nothing was there. No person, nothing. I turned back to
Audrey and said, "I'm alright. The atmosphere here is getting the best
of my imagination I guess." We walked on, catching up with Rod, who by
now was at the other end of the tomb. I knew it was not Rod playing
some trick. He made no mention of it either. If he had been playing a
joke he would have said something, if no other reason than to savor the
moment. And besides, how could he have had something grab my shoulder
and not have anything there. At the time I rejected my intuitive
feelings, they were, that something did indeed call me and touch me,
and I felt it was something from the past. I convinced myself it was
the wind blowing through the tomb, the atmosphere and my imagination,
nothing more. Rationalizing the entire sensation.

Things like this happen frequently on digs. Part of it is the
excitement of the dig. Part because of the thrill of unveiling a
previous history and life style. I've even seen people on digs run in
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 31
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
horror from a newly opened tomb, because they were convinced there was
someone in the tomb. The curse of King Tutankhamen helps encourage
people to have these sensations. Since 1922 when King Tut's tomb was
opened, and the members of the expedition started falling prey to 'odd'
circumstances of death, the workers and guides have maintained the
believe that there is a curse with each tomb and each mummy. There are
more curses attached to tombs and caves than there are tombs or caves.
But the eeriness of the moment, when opening a tomb that has not been
opened for several thousand years, does not leave you. It goes with
the territory, and is a common experience on digs. Perhaps this was
another warning of what was yet to come. And if I had heeded this
warning, the rest of my trip would have been to stay in Great Britain
and forego Austria and the Black Forest. Conceivably, this is merely
hindsight and not a realistic assessment of the events that occurred.

I would say all and all I had a very enjoyable stay in Great Britain.
The events at the park and at Stoney Littleton were quickly forgotten.
When you are in country such as England it is best to dismiss the
stories of ghosts and even better for you not to listen to the stories
of legends. After all the British have had thousands of years to
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 32

expand and expound on these legends and ghost stories.

I was to leave in the morning, flying from Heathrow to Salzburg at
10:00 am. This meant being to the airport at 8:00 am at the latest.
The ques or lines are very long at Heathrow. Audrey and Rod live in
Salisbury, which is quite a drive to Heathrow, and we would be leaving
at the busiest time of the morning so we turned in rather early. It
was 9:00 pm and I lay in bed waiting for sleep. Four days ago I could
not wait for my head to hit the pillow, jet lag I guess, now I lay wide
awake and unable to sleep. I sat up and turned on the light and began
reading some more literature on the Black Forest and Austria. Sleep
must of have overtaken me because the next thing I realized it was
morning and the alarm was blaring in my ear. I was packed and ready to
go, so it would be simple to get going.

We made it to the airport with no problems, despite the traffic. As we
said goodbye Audrey expressed her concern about my leaving. She was
frightened, it was obvious, but there was nothing I could do to change
this. We made our normal promises to do this again, then I was soon on
my way. As I made my walk down the ramp to the plane, I could see Rod
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 33
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
waving goodbye. Audrey did not wave, she looked scared and worried. I
settled down in my assigned seat and began to reflect on the events of
the past few days. The flight was relatively short and before I knew
it I was in Salzburg.

The city is quite beautiful. I remembered the first time I saw it was
when I was watching the Winter Olympics, Salzburg was one of the cities
ABC highlighted as an entertainment spot for the Olympic athletes.
They showed us some of the city, I fell hopelessly in love with the
peaceful serenity the city displayed. Time had all but stopped for this
beautiful country town. It appeared to be safe and protected,
surrounded by the beauty of high and sometimes quite dangerous,
mountains. Just what I thought would bring peace and serenity to me
and help put the past year behind me.

The setting of Salzburg is perfect. It lies between the banks of the
Salzach River and at one point is between two mountains, the
Kapuzinerberg on one shore, the Monchsberg on the other. It is a most
enchanting city. The architecture of Salzburg is of a single style,
baroque.

Most people associate Salzburg with Mozart. It is the city of the
Mozart Festival. Mozart was born in the city of Salzburg in 1756. In
his 35 years of life, he crammed a prodigious number of compositions.
Though Mozart was the wonder and glory of Europe, Austria and his
native city did not honor him in his lifetime. It was not until 1925
the Mozart Festival began.

One location I desired to go was Mozart's home, at Getreidegasse 9,
which has been converted to a museum. A final tribute of homage to the
genius of Salzburg.

I, along with the other members of the tour group, stayed at
Kaserebrau, Kaigassee 33, not far from Mozartplatz. It is an Inn of
moderate cost, furnished in old Salzburg style. Enchanting, and
lovely, as if no one told the proprietor the twentieth century had
arrived in all of Europe. You could believe the Inn was in a time warp
of the eighteenth century. Going on, as if Mozart himself were still
alive and would soon walk through the front door.

The official day of the tour was to begin the day after tomorrow. But
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 35
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
tonight we were to have a 'get acquainted' dinner. I choose to take
this day so I could spend the time enjoying the city of Salzburg and
the beauty surrounding it. The people, though most German speaking, do
speak some English and are charming and gracious. They, unlike other
areas of Europe I have visited did not seem to have a general dislike
for Americans, which made the site seeing trip of their city even more
enjoyable. I lunched at Cafe Tomaselli on Alter Market. A story book
type of cafe with sidewalk tables and a wonderful selection of fine
Austrian foods to choose, not even looking at the most delectable
pastries they offered.

When evening came, I enjoyed dinner, with the rest of the tour group,
at the Dachgarten Restaurant Europa, atop the Europa Hotel. The view
of the city is positively splendid from here. The food, though
somewhat expensive, I would say was well worth the price.

It was there I met the rest of the tour group. Much to my surprise and
delight I saw someone sitting at the table I recognized. Thomas
Prescott sat quietly at the other end of the table with a gentleman
named Mr. Bentley. He raised his hand in a sort of wave motion,
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 36
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
smiled at me, then nodded his head. I looked forward to sight seeing
on this trip, but my interest of the tour group just rose ten points.

The other members, a Mrs. Moore, a widow and retired bank teller from
Ohio. I think she said Columbus. She was showing pictures of her
grandchildren to everyone, so I tried to stay clear. I don't like
looking at pictures of children. I never know what to say. I've seen
some of funniest pictures of children and everyone always says 'Oh
isn't he/she cute', when what they are thinking is 'my God what a
homely kid'. So I avoid this area because it makes me feel very
uncomfortable. I figured I would fall victim to Mrs. Moore's photos
soon enough.

There is Mr. and Mrs. Bentley. Mr. Bentley is a professor at
Cambridge. It seems Mr. Prescott knows him from his years at Cambridge
as a student. Mrs. Bentley, as she described herself, is a professor's
wife. This meant she frequently served tea for other professors and at
times, students. She was the lady of the house, insuring the dinners
for other staff members of the university, ran smoothly and with
eloquence. She did not talk very much. She seemed to take a back seat
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 37
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
to Mr. Bentley.

He, on the other hand, is quite a talker. I am not saying he talks to
excess, but he does enjoy a good debate. This became obvious when he,
Mr. Clark and Mr. Prescott got into an argument about the political
climate of American intervention into some area of the world and Great
Britain's acquiesce of this action.

Mr. and Mrs. Clark are from Chicago. Mrs. Clark is a computer operator
and mother. They have four children. He is a computer programmer.
They met, as Mrs. Clark said, at work and 'have been working together
every since'. I should say with four children this is an accurate
statement.

There are twenty four of us in total, this is including Karl, our bus
driver, and Brenda our tour guide. Both are from Cologne, Germany.
They are not related, nor married, to each other that is, but have
worked together for three years. Karl says they have developed such a
routine, they work together like a well oiled machine. They both speak
impeccable English, however Brenda uses German frequently. She seems
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 38
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
to be more comfortable with her native tongue. Who could blame her,
I'm more comfortable with mine, though I do speak German, badly, but
nonetheless I use and understand it.

I spoke briefly to Mr. Prescott. He was heavy in the debate with Mr.
Clark and Mr. Bentley. I asked him if he thought Rod suggesting a
holiday to him, and this tour specifically, did not seem terribly
coincidental to him. Or is it my imagination? He agreed that indeed
it was an odd coincidence, and then winked at me. I do not know about
Mr. Prescott, but I certainly have a few things to say to Rod and
Audrey the next time we speak.

I still found Mr. Prescott terribly charming. He is very British.
This is not intended to be a slur against him, but rather a compliment.
So many of the British people have become Americanized, their heritage
is becoming lost in that Americanization. I, in truth, envy the
British, with all the history they have, it gives them a true sense of
purpose. And Mr. Prescott displays this sense of purpose. He is not
snobbish, to the contrary I found him to be very down to earth and
congenial. He did not appear to put on airs, nor indicate, though from
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'

a titled family, he thought himself better than anyone else. Many of
the titled families lost this delusion of self importance when Great
Britain declared themselves to be a meritocracy.

The average age of the tour group, I would guess, is about fifty five
to maybe sixty five. Mr. Prescott and myself, it appears, are the

Everyone liked to party, with, possibly, the only exception being Mrs.
Bentley. She seemed to take the roll of hostess even now. I suppose
after a while this behavior becomes second nature. No one seemed to
mind her playing hostess, and everyone just seemed to be relaxing and
enjoying themselves.

I became tired, so I decided to return to the hotel ahead of everyone
else. I said good night to a few of the people I had met and excused
myself. I walked back to the hotel.

The city at night is quite lively. An yet quite haunting. The old

in time, but the music of the youth that filtered out to the street
from the discos and other nightspots convinces you of the reality of
the twentieth century. But when the street was quite, and the only
sound to be heard was that of your own heart, it conjured up a world of
religious myth and mystery. And reality somehow ceased to be a factor
to thought.

I returned to Kasererbrau, readied myself for bed and much to my
surprise fell off to sleep rather quickly. I entered the world of
fantasy and found myself partaking in the dream state as if it reality.
I do not recall exactly what I was dreaming but do recall it was not of
me running down a flight of stairs. This time I woke with a quite
unsettled feeling. Anna continued imposing herself in my dreams. I
was somewhat dismayed by this. It left me very perplexed, for I had
never dreamed of her before, either when she was alive or now when she
is dead, until I made the decision to come on this trip. I knew she
was attempting to warn me of something because of all the times she
told me to go no further on this trip. But she knew me, she knew I
would continue on despite these warnings. The message being delivered
was clear. But warn me of what was uncertain. I dismissed the entire

incident once again, deciding it was my own tiredness and enchantment
with the city that brought this to me. I rolled over and went back to
sleep. When I woke it was nine in the morning and I recall no further
areas of concern from dreams or otherwise.

I easily negated invading concepts of paranormal activities. I did not
do this frivolously, but in accordance to the things I was taught as a
child, proof was necessary to convince me. Therefore the hypothesis of
life after death and being able to be contacted by someone from beyond
the grave, were merely theories and not religious practice. I
comprehend people wishing to believe these theories and respect their
right to do so. I, however, had never had an experience such as this
to convince me they are real. Until now that is. But even now I could
not accept these things as really happening. I've had, what some call
psychic flashes, but I was taught to believe this was mere
happenstance.

I was anxious to get started this morning. I went to the cafe near the
Inn, the SchatzKonditorei and had coffee only. Then made my way to the
Catacombs to be on one of the first tours of the day. The Catacombs
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'

are of the Church of St. Peter. Being enthusiastic about archeology
you would know this would be one of my first choices to visit. After
the tour I went to the Hellbrunn Castle-Palace tour. The buildings of
the Palace date back to the early 17th century, and is the oldest
baroque park in Europe with fountain water plays, natural rock theater
and fine garden sculptures. And Monatsschlosschen with folklore museum.
From Hellbrunn Castle I went to Haus Der Natur, a museum of eighty
rooms of natural history exhibition in its variegated forms, historic,
geographical, biological development. I returned to the Inn and rested
a bit, then showered and dressed for my last evening in this city of
enchantment. I went to the Hotel Winkler on Monchsberg. Evening
attire is required for this is the casino of Salzburg. Baccarat,
roulette and blackjack are played according to the international rules.
But gambling, after all, is gambling no matter what country you are in
or what language you say it. The atmosphere of the Hotel Winkler is
just as one would imagine. It is almost like walking into an Ian
Fleming film with James Bond attending the roulette wheel.

It was there I discovered, once again, Mr. Prescott. He was playing
Baccarat, and from the looks of things, doing pretty well at the table.

Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 43
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
At first I only noticed him. But after I stood and watched him play a
hand, and win, I could hear Mrs. Moore cheering for him. I glanced
about the area and noticed most of the tour group was roaming through
the casino. I played some blackjack, then I played at roulette and
moved on to another evening club. It turned into a very entertaining
evening for me. I went to a dance club and of all things, ran into a
friend of mine from Los Angeles. Frank was here on vacation and was
taking in the local culture. We danced quite a lot. Before I realized
it, it was nearly one thirty in the morning. I had to be up early so I
decided I had better leave. I told Frank to have a nice vacation and
we would compare notes when we got back to L.A. He wished me the same
and I left.

I found myself back at the Inn at nearly two a.m. and yet I felt very
restless. I was packed and ready for our tour to begin in the morning
but I continued to feel uneasy about something. I somehow felt I was
being watched while I sat trying to relax in my room. I tried to read
but could not concentrate long enough to understand what I read. My
mind was wondering and I could not shake the uneasy feeling I continued
to have. Becoming exhausted I must have dozed off to sleep and began
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 44

to dream. I woke with a start when Anna warned me not to continue on
my tour. This dream was different from the others. I did not run down
a flight of stairs, nor did I run through the glade. I, instead, found
myself in a room, it looked like a typical hotel room. The fear or
terror which I had felt in the prior dreams I still felt, but it seemed
to be more distant from me than before. I could sense an odious
feeling in this dream. I sat up on the side of the bed. I then had a
mental argument with myself regarding the significance of this dream
and decided to continue on, with caution, regardless of any warnings.
Having come to this decision I must have relaxed more because now when
I read, I had no trouble concentrating and soon was off to sleep.

Team Eeeek: The Dawning of An Age - Skills of a Carpenter Page 46
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Darkness sliced the Team Eeeek Offices into little pockets of artificial
light. The foul weather and the sprawling night reaching through the
windows into this nerd sanctuary had further isolated the socially
enfeebled geniuses. Darkness seemed to enervate them. Each of the team
members, encased in a halogen halo or a monitor sheen, twitched furtive
glances left or right and impatiently awaited the closing hour.

But none of them was more anxious than Carpenter.

The peerless technician hated the dark. The shadows triggered memories of
a latch-key childhood in a cold tenement in New Jersey. Shafts of light
recalled huddling in the cold while the frightening noises of fighting
slipped under the door. And the dark's separation of one from his fellows
reminded him of a night in a Yale dormitory, a night when "she" closed a
door on his life.

No. There was no absolution for it. Carpenter hated the dark.

Yet he waited, as he had done on selected nights for the last six weeks;
he waited in those hateful shadows for his fellow employees to leave.

"This place is giving me the (crunch) creeps!"
"It's the conservationist attitude of the building's management. Full
lighting won't come on until 5 p.m."

"It's not the building's management. It's OUR management. The boss is a
tight wad!"
"I don't care WHAT she wads! (crunch) I'm outta here!"

"Better sneak, Crunchie. The boss don't like us leaving early."
"Sneak, my foot! In this darkness, she won't be able to see me!"

"She may not be able to see you, Crunchie," the boss' voice boomed
through the darkened room, "but she can still hear you!"
Crunchie shrunk back down to his desk. "Just (crunch) grousing, boss. I
wasn't really goin' anywhere."

KR's footsteps reverberated in the sudden silence (she loved her
dramatic gestures). She stepped into the center of the office and swung
her "evil eye" on every up-turned face. When she was satisfied with the
result, she came to the point.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Team Eeeek: The Dawning of An Age - Skills of a Carpenter Page 48
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Actually that's what I came in to tell you," she said. "We're
experiencing a slight power shortage. And since we suck up more juice
than the rest of the building combined, the property manager has asked if
we could knock off early today."

"Hate to do it, boss, (crunch) but if it will help..."

"Right!" the boss scoffed. "We'll see how much you hate it when you come
in at seven a.m.!"

"SEVEN (crunch) A.M.!"

"That's right, seven a.m.! Still want to help, Crunchie?"
The purchasing expert slunk into a sulk but said nothing more.

"Starting tomorrow, we're staggering office hours," the boss continued.
"It will help lighten traffic and ease the power crunch - no pun
intended. So all of you who are not engaged in something you can't
interrupt may go home now. I'll have a staggered schedule for you in the
morning."
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Team Eeeek: The Dawning of An Age - Skills of a Carpenter Page 49
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Grumbling and complaining, the Team Eeeek members rose from their desks
and pulled on their coats. Most of them were through the door when the
boss stepped over to Carpenter's work area.

"Aren't you leaving, Carp?"

"I should finish this upgrade before the team comes back. In fact, you
may wanna schedule me for swing shift or graveyard. Most of my work is
on their machines anyway."

The boss eyed her technician suspiciously knowing his distaste for
isolation and darkness. But she had her own problems and he probably had
his reasons. The Carpenter's reasons were always good reasons.

"Okay, Carp," the boss said slowly. "Think it over tonight and whatever
you decide, I'll put into the schedule."

The master technician nodded his thanks and the boss left him, alone, in
the darkened isolation of the Team Eeeek Offices.

`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Team Eeeek: The Dawning of An Age - Skills of a Carpenter Page 50
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Darn hexadecimals!"

The technician possessed an engineering degree from Yale, a Master's
Degree in Computer Technology from M.I.T., and three Ph.D.s in assorted
computer hardware fields. But he hated hexadecimals; he claimed they
didn't put any silicone under his fingernails.

"Stupid programmers! Haven't they ever heard of a straight line?"

It was late. It was late and he was tired. And he had never had any
patience with the kind of mental processes required to program the
beautiful memory chips and computer boards that he so loved to touch.

Hand Carpenter the chips and he could connect hair follicles to the sweat
glands on a little toe. But don't ask him to route the signals. No, not
that. Especially at 3 a.m. In the lonely, deserted offices of Eeeek
International.

He was hungry but time was running out. No telling how much the boss
already knew.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Team Eeeek: The Dawning of An Age - Skills of a Carpenter Page 51
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I'd better look for another approach," he mumbled.

Carpenter leafed through the Team's documentation, searching for
something, anything!, that made sense to his purposes. And all the while
he talked to himself - a habit he had only just acquired - of the artful
machinations of his teammates.

"STOP!" he shouted into the empty room. "Stop! Think! Follow this thing
through like a nerd!"

The anger in his voice surprised him; he had not realized his own
animosity toward the mysteries of programming. At heart he knew himself
to be a hands-on, shade-tree mechanic who had stumbled onto success in
the land of high-tech.

As a teen he had restored, rebuilt or repaired everything from crystal
radios to an uncle's Packard. Parts he couldn't purchase, he made on his
father's work bench. Schematics he couldn't find he redesigned. Give him
a wire, give him a bit of solder and a pair of pliers, give him anything
he could FEEL and he would give you the Taj Mahal.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Team Eeeek: The Dawning of An Age - Skills of a Carpenter Page 52
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
But THIS!

"STOP! STOP!" Carpenter cried.

He had to quell the madness crowding his mind. He was not used to the
mental frustration; nor was he comfortable with the deceit. But he had
started on a journey and he could not go back; it was too late. He had
already altered some of the company's records.

"Think it through! Think it through!" he told himself. "What kind of mind
would create a mess like this?"

He was referring to the Eeeek International in-house software. And when
he realized the completeness of his own question, he had the answer.

"The Team!"
Of course! The Team had created the maze of interconnecting programs, the
most comprehensive data analysis system in the world. But The Team had
also created the most comprehensive security system to protect that
programming.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Team Eeeek: The Dawning of An Age - Skills of a Carpenter Page 53
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
So how would somebody get past the security system?

"I guess there'd be some sort of code," Carp mumbled; but he was warming
to the problem - he could feel it. "Some sort of access pattern."

He rifled through the pages of the manual in front of him looking for a
title, a heading, anything that suggested access to where he wanted to
go: the logs.

"At least I've isolated the question," he reminded himself to re-instill
a little self-assurance.

In truth he had been approaching the problem correctly; the documentation
manuals were beginning to bear that out. For what Carpenter wanted to
accomplish, he required access to the programming which produced the
exhaustive "User Logs" of the Team's computer network. The Logs recorded
every entry on the Network as well as into the sub-directories, databases
and programs. They were that part of the Team's Security System which
were designed and upgraded twice a year to prevent exactly what Carpenter
was trying to do: hack into the system.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Team Eeeek: The Dawning of An Age - Skills of a Carpenter Page 54
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Hacking!" Carp said. "That's what I'm doing!"
The realization brought him no joy but it did provide a clue.
"I'm trying to hack into the Team Eeeek computer," he told himself. "So
who is the best hacker I know?"

The question brought an immediate answer: "Neal!"

Yes...Neal. The physicist was notorious in his youth for walking through
Government and Defense Department security systems and leaving "KillJoy
Was Here!" notes all over sensitive material. After frustrating the heads
of every major branch of government over the course of three years, the
President offered an unconditional pardon to "the Hacker known as
'KillJoy'" if he would only stop.

Neal finally turned himself in saying, "It wasn't fun anymore." He was
then offered a job with the CIA which he accepted.

"What would Neal do?" Carpenter wondered aloud. And then he remembered
the physicist's simple boast on the subject of hacking: "Always let the
program, itself, do the work."
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Team Eeeek: The Dawning of An Age - Skills of a Carpenter Page 55
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, if he was going to let the program do the work, he would still have
to get in. "THINK!" Carpenter knew from conversations around the office
the Team stored everything in compiled form. He realized that he'd have
to decompile the Logs before he could alter them. "What about the Eeeek
Utilities?" he wondered. But that wouldn't help; he would still need the
source code. "Source code," Carp muttered, flipping through the manual.
When he found the section, his excitement mounted. "If I can't hack the
code, I wonder if I can..." He found a section entitled, "Installing a
Code." With sweaty palms he laid the manual on the desk and began to tap
commands into his computer. "Let's see. First, Control F9." As he worked
his way through the instructions, he took note of a godsend procedure:
"Restoring a Code." Before long his screen presented him with a box.
.------------.
| | Enter Code | |
`------------'
Nervously Carpenter typed "*.*" and pressed the "Enter" key. With that
done, he returned to the "Access Code?" prompt and typed in the same
"*.*" and there on the screen burst the Security System's User Logs.
Now all he had to do was falsify the company's records.
To be continued.

Grand Jury Indicts Jacksonville Company Page 69
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
DC, 1-14/US Newswire: A federal grand jury in Jacksonville, FL, has
returned a 3-count indictment charging a Jacksonville, FL, corporation &
the company's principals with federal environmental violations relating
to the treatment & disposal of hazardous waste. Those indicted are:
Plas-Chem Coatings Inc., 5220 New Kings Road; Wilmer Rowe, age 50, the
owner of Plas-Chem; & Danny Jones, age 38, the general manager of
Plas-Chem. If convicted, each individual faces a maximum possible
sentence of up to 25 years imprisonment, fines totaling $750,000, or
both. Plas-Chem Coatings Inc., which manufactures & sells paints &
coatings, could be fined up to $1.5 million. The indictment alleges that
Rowe, Jones & Plas-Chem violated the Resource Conservation & Recovery Act
between summer of 1991 & 3-18-92, by directing Plas-Chem employees to
transport paint wastes, & sludges to a warehouse at 144 Watts St,
Jacksonville, FL The indictment charges that these substances, which
constitute toxic & ingnitable hazardous wastes, were dumped out on the
warehouse floor. Allegedly, the wastes were later scraped up, placed in
55-gallon drums, & stored without a permit at the Plas-Chem facility on
New Kings Road in violation of federal law. The indictment also charges
that the defendants stored & disposed of hazardous wastes by placing
toxic & ignitable paint wastes in a dumpster at 5220 New Kings Road.

Statement by Planned Parenthood on Supreme Court's Ruling Page 70
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
NY, 1-13/US Newswire: The following is a statement by David J. Andrews,
acting president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Planned
Parenthood Action Fund.

"With its ruling in Bray v. Alexandria Women's Heath Clinic, the U.S.
Supreme Court has abdicated its responsibility to curb mob violence and
protect the welfare of millions of American women. The court has cast
doubt on the ability of federal courts to police the actions of Operation
Rescue and other anti-choice terrorists at family planning centers.
Unencumbered by the threat of federal intervention, these groups will
escalate their vicious campaign of harassment. The timing of this
decision is especially outrageous in light of Operation Rescue's recent
announcement that they plan to disrupt the presidential inaugural
celebration. Planned Parenthood calls on President-elect Clinton to
speak out forcefully and, once in office, take every legal action within
his power to safeguard women. Further, we urge Congress to pass the
Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, legislation that will
supersede the decision in Bray and ensure that women have safe access to
health care. American women will not be deterred from exercising their
fundamental right to make personal and private decisions."

Department of Justice on Testing of Smokeless Tobacco Page 71
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Department of Justice
announced today that it does not intend to challenge under the antitrust
laws a proposal by the leading smokeless tobacco producers in the United
States to form a research joint venture to develop uniform analytical
methods for measuring the nicotine and moisture content of smokeless
tobacco products. Smokeless tobacco products include various types of
chewing tobacco and snuff such as loose leaf, plug, twist, and moist or
dry snuff. The research joint venture was formed in response to the
enactment of the Comprehensive Smokeless Tobacco Health Education Act of
1986, 15 U.S.C. Section 4403, which requires producers of smokeless
tobacco products to file reports as to the nicotine content of their
products and to a request by the Department of Health and Human Services
(HHS) that the companies develop uniform testing methods to report the
nicotine and moisture content of their products. The department's
position was stated in a letter from J. Mark Gidley, Acting Assistant
Attorney General in charge of the Antitrust Division, to counsel for the
joint venture. A file containing the business review request and the
department's response may be examined in the Legal Procedure Unit of the
Antitrust Division, Room 3233, Department of Justice, Washington, D.C.
20530. After 30 days documents supporting will be added to the file.

"October Surprise" Author to Run for Congress Page 72
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
DC, 1-14/US Newswire: Former White House Policy Analyst Barbara Honegger
announced she will seek the seat of Rep. Leon Panetta, OMB director
designate, in a special election in CA's 17th District. In a press
conference at the National Press Club 12-17, & in statements in DC 1-13
on the release of the House Oct.Surprise Task Force report, Honegger, the
author of the first book on the subject, documented gross conflicts of
interest of the Task Force's chief counsel, Lawrence Barcella - former
attorney for Reagan's top campaign political adviser Nofziger & a recent
law partner of Reagan's '80 Campaign Committee Chairman Paul Laxalt; also
of Sen. Terry Sanford, lead senator on the coordinated Oct.Surprise
Senate investigation who was former attorney for a close Reagan associate
reported to have been involved in the Oct. Surprise, Earl Brian. "The
Oct.Surprise charge is one of treason - an illegal arms-for-hostages deal
with Iran in '80 - & is obviously something neither the Republicans nor
the Democrats want proved. But '80 Reagan campaign manager Casey's
records are missing - selectively purged - for exactly the dates expected
if the Oct.Surprise is true - 10-19 & 21, '80; 8-16-80; & key dates in
July '80. & the Senate Oct.Surprise report devastated Bush's alibi for
10-19-80, even though the Democratic-led House Task Force 'exonerated'
him before it began its investigation last year," Honegger charged.

Long-sought Mafia leader "Toto" Riina Arrested in Sicily Page 73
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
DC, 1-15/US Newswire: The undisputed head of the Sicilian Mafia Commission
was arrested in Palermo by Italian authorities after a 20-year fugitive
investigation, according to FBI Director William S. Sessions. Salvatore
"Toto" Riina was arrested by a special unit of the Italian Carabinieri.
The investigation by the Italian authorities was assisted by the FBI,
specifically through computerized "age enhanced" photos that were
produced by the FBI Laboratory. This was accomplished through the
application of the Face Aging Computer or "Imager" computer which aids
investigators in the search for missing persons & fugitives. The system
offers sophisticated photocomposing & retouching capabilities which
allows an operator to project the future appearance of an adult or child
based upon what is discovered about the aging process through study
combined with artistic skill. In Washington, D.C., Sessions said, "Riina
was considered by Italian authorities the most wanted fugitive in Italian
law enforcement history, & his arrest has definitely struck a significant
blow to the Sicilian Mafia. He has been linked by Italian authorities to
numerous murders & had been tried in absentia & sentenced to life
imprisonment in 1987." Interaction between Italian authorities & the FBI
has been particularly close since last summer, following the
assassinations of two judges directly involved in Mafia prosecutions.

Justice Dept to Dismiss Indictment Against Noriega? Page 74
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
DC, 1-15/US Newswire: The Department of Justice today filed a motion to
dismiss a three-count drug trafficking indictment against General Manuel
Noriega. This is the text of the motion to dismiss:
U.S. District Court, Middle District of Florida, Tampa Division
Case No. 88-28-CR-T-21(B) U.S. vs. Manuel Antonio Noreiga
Motion to Dismiss
Robert W. Genzman, United States Attorney for the Middle District of
Florida, by and through its undersigned attorney, moves that the above
cause be dismissed without prejudice, in accordance with Rle 48(a),
Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure, for the reason that the defendant
has already been convicted of serious drug trafficking offenses in the
Southern District of Florida and received a 40-year prison sentence.
During the trial of that case, the evidence in this case was introduced
and considered by the jury. In light of the substantial sentence imposed
by the court in the Southern District of Florida, and the fact that the
full range of the defendant's drug trafficking-related activity was
presented in the trial, the government's interest has been vindicated and
the cost of a second trial would not be warrented.
Respectfully submitted,
Robert W. Genzman, United States Attorney

University of MI Settles Computer Overbilling Allegations Page 75
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
DC, 1-15/US Newswire: Dept of Justice announced the University of MI has
agreed to a $3.35 million settlement to resolve allegations it violated
False Claims Act & provisions of Office of Management & Budget Circular
A-21 by overbilling the government for use of its computing facilities by
federal agencies & grantees. S.M.Gerson, assistant attorney general in
charge of the Civil Division, & S.J. Markman, US Attorney in Detroit,
said it stemmed from a qui tam action filed by a former employee, R.Moore,
& involved claims the university, from 1986 through beginning of 1992,
overcharged various gov't agencies with which it had contracts to perform
computing services for government research & other projects. Gerson said,
"This settlement underscores the fact the False Claims Act places an
identical obligation upon public institutions, as in this case, it does
upon private entities & individuals - an obligation to submit only
accurate, carefully prepared &, above all, truthful claims for federal
funds." Under the settlement, the university will pay the US a lump sum
of $2.8 million & will provide federal users with $300,000 in free
computer services. As a result of the government's investigation, the
university already has credited the US with more than $250,000 in such
free services, & reduced the rate it charges federal users by 70%. Moore
will receive $570,000 under the False Claims Act.

of IL, along with William D.Branon, Special Agent-in-Charge, FBI, Chicago
Division, announced a federal jury convicted former First Ward Alderman

was found guilty of racketeering, racketeering conspiracy, five counts of
bribery & four counts of extortion. The trial began on 12-14-92, before
Judge Marvin Aspen. During the trial, the government proved that Roti
extorted & accepted $7,500 from government informant Robert Cooley in May
& June 1989, in exchange for Roti's support for a proposed zoning change
at 400 N. Racine Ave. in Chicago. The government also proved that Roti
took another $10,000 from Cooley in June & July, 1989, in exchange for
promising to influence the performance of the judge assigned to the case
of Eldridge vs. Carr, & another judge. (The Eldrige case was filed by
