  371. │ HeadLine:  Robber Took More Than Money                                     │

  373. │ Story:  The owner of a gas station was startled when he heard someone open │ 
  374. │         the cash drawer at his establishment.  Working under a car, he     │ 
  375. │         quickly pushed himself out from beneath the car and saw a man tak- │ 
  376. │         ing the cash from his drawer.  He raced in front of the man to stop│ 
  377. │         him.  A struggle took place.  The owner reached under the counter  │ 
  378. │         and pulled out a pistol, the robber grabbed it.  The fight contin- │ 
  379. │         ued.  The owner then reached for and grabbed a pair of pliers.  He │

  1230. │ merely asked if I had slept well and then almost as an after thought,      │ 
  1231. │ asked if I dreamed.  I told her I had slept well, but could not            │ 
  1232. │ remember if I had dreamed.                                                 │

  1234. │ I know this was an out to out lie.  But Audrey was                         │

  1236. │ obviously worried, I felt it not necessary to make things worse, so I      │ 
  1237. │ opted not to say anything more about my dreams.                            │

  1239. │ This was the fourth and final full day of my trip to London.  Rod had      │ 
  1240. │ already decided, because of my interest in archeology, we should visit     │ 
  1241. │ Stoney Littleton, Barrows, chambered tomb.  This is an area that has       │ 
  1242. │ been dated back to the Neolithic period.  It is an underground cavern      │ 
  1243. │ of tombs. As we walked through the cavern of tombs, the wind whistled      │ 
  1244. │ through the tunnel that walked.  I turned around quickly, for I am         │ 
  1245. │ certain I heard my name called.  When I saw no one there, I turned back    │ 
  1246. │ around, Rod and Audrey were now some distance in front of me.  I           │ 
  1247. │ dismissed the thought of Rod having played another one of his tricks on    │ 
  1248. │ me.  I continued on, hurrying to catch up with Rod and Audrey.  As I       │

  1255. │ stopped in her tracks and turned to look at me, saying "What's wrong?      │ 
  1256. │ Are you okay?" I did not answer, I turned around to see who had grabbed    │ 
  1257. │ my shoulder, nothing was there.  No person, nothing.  I turned back to     │ 
  1258. │ Audrey and said, "I'm alright.  The atmosphere here is getting the best    │ 
  1259. │ of my imagination I guess." We walked on, catching up with Rod, who by     │ 
  1260. │ now was at the other end of the tomb.  I knew it was not Rod playing       │ 
  1261. │ some trick.  He made no mention of it either.  If he had been playing a    │ 
  1262. │ joke he would have said something, if no other reason than to savor the    │ 
  1263. │ moment.  And besides, how could he have had something grab my shoulder     │ 
  1264. │ and not have anything there.  At the time I rejected my intuitive          │ 
  1265. │ feelings, they were, that something did indeed call me and touch me,       │ 
  1266. │ and I felt it was something from the past. I convinced myself it was       │ 
  1267. │ the wind blowing through the tomb, the atmosphere and my imagination,      │ 
  1268. │ nothing more.  Rationalizing the entire sensation.                         │ 
  1269. │                                                                            │ 
  1270. │ Things like this happen frequently on digs.  Part of it is the             │ 
  1271. │ excitement of the dig.  Part because of the thrill of unveiling a          │ 
  1272. │ previous history and life style.  I've even seen people on digs run in     │

  1277. │ horror from a newly opened tomb, because they were convinced there was     │ 
  1278. │ someone in the tomb.  The curse of King Tutankhamen helps encourage        │ 
  1279. │ people to have these sensations.  Since 1922 when King Tut's tomb was      │ 
  1280. │ opened, and the members of the expedition started falling prey to 'odd'    │ 
  1281. │ circumstances of death, the workers and guides have maintained the         │ 
  1282. │ believe that there is a curse with each tomb and each mummy.  There are    │ 
  1283. │ more curses attached to tombs and caves than there are tombs or caves.     │ 
  1284. │ But the eeriness of the moment, when opening a tomb that has not been      │ 
  1285. │ opened for several thousand years, does not leave you.  It goes with       │ 
  1286. │ the territory, and is a common experience on digs.  Perhaps this was       │ 
  1287. │ another warning of what was yet to come.  And if I had heeded this         │ 
  1288. │ warning, the rest of my trip would have been to stay in Great Britain      │ 
  1289. │ and forego Austria and the Black Forest.  Conceivably, this is merely      │ 
  1290. │ hindsight and not a realistic assessment of the events that occurred.      │ 
  1291. │                                                                            │ 
  1292. │ I would say all and all I had a very enjoyable stay in Great Britain.      │ 
  1293. │ The events at the park and at Stoney Littleton were quickly forgotten.     │ 
  1294. │ When you are in country such as England it is best to dismiss the          │ 
  1295. │ stories of ghosts and even better for you not to listen to the stories     │ 
  1296. │ of legends.  After all the British have had thousands of years to          │

  1303. │ I was to leave in the morning, flying from Heathrow to Salzburg at         │ 
  1304. │ 10:00 am.  This meant being to the airport at 8:00 am at the latest.       │ 
  1305. │ The ques or lines are very long at Heathrow.  Audrey and Rod live in       │ 
  1306. │ Salisbury, which is quite a drive to Heathrow, and we would be leaving     │ 
  1307. │ at the busiest time of the morning so we turned in rather early.  It       │ 
  1308. │ was 9:00 pm and I lay in bed waiting for sleep.  Four days ago I could     │ 
  1309. │ not wait for my head to hit the pillow, jet lag I guess, now I lay wide    │ 
  1310. │ awake and unable to sleep.  I sat up and turned on the light and began     │ 
  1311. │ reading some more literature on the Black Forest and Austria.  Sleep       │ 
  1312. │ must of have overtaken me because the next thing I realized it was         │ 
  1313. │ morning and the alarm was blaring in my ear.  I was packed and ready to    │ 
  1314. │ go, so it would be simple to get going.                                    │ 
  1315. │                                                                            │ 
  1316. │ We made it to the airport with no problems, despite the traffic.  As we    │ 
  1317. │ said goodbye Audrey expressed her concern about my leaving.  She was       │ 
  1318. │ frightened, it was obvious, but there was nothing I could do to change     │ 
  1319. │ this.  We made our normal promises to do this again, then I was soon on    │ 
  1320. │ my way.  As I made my walk down the ramp to the plane, I could see Rod     │

  1326. │ settled down in my assigned seat and began to reflect on the events of     │ 
  1327. │ the past few days.  The flight was relatively short and before I knew      │ 
  1328. │ it I was in Salzburg.                                                      │ 
  1329. │                                                                            │ 
  1330. │ The city is quite beautiful.  I remembered the first time I saw it was     │ 
  1331. │ when I was watching the Winter Olympics, Salzburg was one of the cities    │ 
  1332. │ ABC highlighted as an entertainment spot for the Olympic athletes.         │ 
  1333. │ They showed us some of the city, I fell hopelessly in love with the        │ 
  1334. │ peaceful serenity the city displayed.  Time had all but stopped for this   │ 
  1335. │ beautiful country town.  It appeared to be safe and protected,             │ 
  1336. │ surrounded by the beauty of high and sometimes quite dangerous,            │ 
  1337. │ mountains.  Just what I thought would bring peace and serenity to me       │ 
  1338. │ and help put the past year behind me.                                      │ 
  1339. │                                                                            │ 
  1340. │ The setting of Salzburg is perfect.  It lies between the banks of the      │ 
  1341. │ Salzach River and at one point is between two mountains, the               │ 
  1342. │ Kapuzinerberg on one shore, the Monchsberg on the other.  It is a most     │ 
  1343. │ enchanting city.  The architecture of Salzburg is of a single style,       │ 
  1344. │ baroque.                                                                   │

  1349. │ Most people associate Salzburg with Mozart.  It is the city of the         │ 
  1350. │ Mozart Festival.  Mozart was born in the city of Salzburg in 1756.  In     │ 
  1351. │ his 35 years of life, he crammed a prodigious number of compositions.      │ 
  1352. │ Though Mozart was the wonder and glory of Europe, Austria and his          │ 
  1353. │ native city did not honor him in his lifetime.  It was not until 1925      │ 
  1354. │ the Mozart Festival began.                                                 │ 
  1355. │                                                                            │ 
  1356. │ One location I desired to go was Mozart's home, at Getreidegasse 9,        │ 
  1357. │ which has been converted to a museum.  A final tribute of homage to the    │ 
  1358. │ genius of Salzburg.                                                        │ 
  1359. │                                                                            │ 
  1360. │ I, along with the other members of the tour group, stayed at               │ 
  1361. │ Kaserebrau, Kaigassee 33, not far from Mozartplatz.  It is an Inn of       │ 
  1362. │ moderate cost, furnished in old Salzburg style.  Enchanting, and           │ 
  1363. │ lovely, as if no one told the proprietor the twentieth century had         │ 
  1364. │ arrived in all of Europe.  You could believe the Inn was in a time warp    │ 
  1365. │ of the eighteenth century.  Going on, as if Mozart himself were still      │ 
  1366. │ alive and would soon walk through the front door.                          │ 
  1367. │                                                                            │ 
  1368. │ The official day of the tour was to begin the day after tomorrow.  But     │

  1374. │ this day so I could spend the time enjoying the city of Salzburg and       │ 
  1375. │ the beauty surrounding it.  The people, though most German speaking, do    │ 
  1376. │ speak some English and are charming and gracious.  They, unlike other      │ 
  1377. │ areas of Europe I have visited did not seem to have a general dislike      │ 
  1378. │ for Americans, which made the site seeing trip of their city even more     │ 
  1379. │ enjoyable.  I lunched at Cafe Tomaselli on Alter Market.  A story book     │ 
  1380. │ type of cafe with sidewalk tables and a wonderful selection of fine        │ 
  1381. │ Austrian foods to choose, not even looking at the most delectable          │ 
  1382. │ pastries they offered.                                                     │ 
  1383. │                                                                            │ 
  1384. │ When evening came, I enjoyed dinner, with the rest of the tour group,      │ 
  1385. │ at the Dachgarten Restaurant Europa, atop the Europa Hotel.  The view      │ 
  1386. │ of the city is positively splendid from here.  The food, though            │ 
  1387. │ somewhat expensive, I would say was well worth the price.                  │ 
  1388. │                                                                            │ 
  1389. │ It was there I met the rest of the tour group.  Much to my surprise and    │ 
  1390. │ delight I saw someone sitting at the table I recognized.  Thomas           │ 
  1391. │ Prescott sat quietly at the other end of the table with a gentleman        │ 
  1392. │ named Mr.  Bentley.  He raised his hand in a sort of wave motion,          │

  1400. │ The other members, a Mrs. Moore, a widow and retired bank teller from      │ 
  1401. │ Ohio.  I think she said Columbus.  She was showing pictures of her         │ 
  1402. │ grandchildren to everyone, so I tried to stay clear.  I don't like         │ 
  1403. │ looking at pictures of children.  I never know what to say.  I've seen     │ 
  1404. │ some of funniest pictures of children and everyone always says 'Oh         │ 
  1405. │ isn't he/she cute', when what they are thinking is 'my God what a          │ 
  1406. │ homely kid'.  So I avoid this area because it makes me feel very           │ 
  1407. │ uncomfortable.  I figured I would fall victim to Mrs. Moore's photos       │ 
  1408. │ soon enough.                                                               │ 
  1409. │                                                                            │ 
  1410. │ There is Mr. and Mrs. Bentley.  Mr. Bentley is a professor at              │ 
  1411. │ Cambridge.  It seems Mr. Prescott knows him from his years at Cambridge    │ 
  1412. │ as a student.  Mrs. Bentley, as she described herself, is a professor's    │ 
  1413. │ wife.  This meant she frequently served tea for other professors and at    │ 
  1414. │ times, students.  She was the lady of the house, insuring the dinners      │ 
  1415. │ for other staff members of the university, ran smoothly and with           │ 
  1416. │ eloquence.  She did not talk very much.  She seemed to take a back seat    │

  1426. │ climate of American intervention into some area of the world and Great     │ 
  1427. │ Britain's acquiesce of this action.                                        │ 
  1428. │                                                                            │ 
  1429. │ Mr. and Mrs. Clark are from Chicago.  Mrs. Clark is a computer operator    │ 
  1430. │ and mother.  They have four children.  He is a computer programmer.        │ 
  1431. │ They met, as Mrs. Clark said, at work and 'have been working together      │ 
  1432. │ every since'.  I should say with four children this is an accurate         │ 
  1433. │ statement.                                                                 │

  1435. │ There are twenty four of us in total, this is including Karl, our bus      │ 
  1436. │ driver, and Brenda our tour guide.  Both are from Cologne, Germany.        │ 
  1437. │ They are not related, nor married, to each other that is, but have         │ 
  1438. │ worked together for three years.  Karl says they have developed such a     │ 
  1439. │ routine, they work together like a well oiled machine.  They both speak    │ 
  1440. │ impeccable English, however Brenda uses German frequently.  She seems      │

  1449. │ I spoke briefly to Mr. Prescott.  He was heavy in the debate with Mr.      │ 
  1450. │ Clark and Mr. Bentley.  I asked him if he thought Rod suggesting a         │ 
  1451. │ holiday to him, and this tour specifically, did not seem terribly          │ 
  1452. │ coincidental to him.  Or is it my imagination?  He agreed that indeed      │ 
  1453. │ it was an odd coincidence, and then winked at me.  I do not know about     │ 
  1454. │ Mr. Prescott, but I certainly have a few things to say to Rod and          │ 
  1455. │ Audrey the next time we speak.                                             │ 
  1456. │                                                                            │ 
  1457. │ I still found Mr. Prescott terribly charming.  He is very British.         │ 
  1458. │ This is not intended to be a slur against him, but rather a compliment.    │ 
  1459. │ So many of the British people have become Americanized, their heritage     │ 
  1460. │ is becoming lost in that Americanization.  I, in truth, envy the           │ 
  1461. │ British, with all the history they have, it gives them a true sense of     │ 
  1462. │ purpose.  And Mr. Prescott displays this sense of purpose.  He is not      │ 
  1463. │ snobbish, to the contrary I found him to be very down to earth and         │ 
  1464. │ congenial.  He did not appear to put on airs, nor indicate, though from    │

  1470. │ the titled families lost this delusion of self importance when Great       │ 
  1471. │ Britain declared themselves to be a meritocracy.                           │

  1473. │ The average age of the tour group, I would guess, is about fifty five      │ 
  1474. │ to maybe sixty five.  Mr. Prescott and myself, it appears, are the         │ 
  1475. │ youngest members of the group.  He is about thirty.                        │ 
  1476. │                                                                            │ 
  1477. │ Everyone liked to party, with, possibly, the only exception being Mrs.     │ 
  1478. │ Bentley.  She seemed to take the roll of hostess even now.  I suppose      │ 
  1479. │ after a while this behavior becomes second nature.  No one seemed to       │ 
  1480. │ mind her playing hostess, and everyone just seemed to be relaxing and      │ 
  1481. │ enjoying themselves.                                                       │

  1483. │ I became tired, so I decided to return to the hotel ahead of everyone      │ 
  1484. │ else.  I said good night to a few of the people I had met and excused      │ 
  1485. │ myself.  I walked back to the hotel.                                       │

  1487. │ The city at night is quite lively.  An yet quite haunting.  The old        │ 
  1488. │ style architecture entices one with the illusion of being placed back      │

  1495. │ the twentieth century.  But when the street was quite, and the only        │ 
  1496. │ sound to be heard was that of your own heart, it conjured up a world of    │ 
  1497. │ religious myth and mystery.  And reality somehow ceased to be a factor     │ 
  1498. │ to thought.                                                                │

  1500. │ I returned to Kasererbrau, readied myself for bed and much to my           │ 
  1501. │ surprise fell off to sleep rather quickly.  I entered the world of         │ 
  1502. │ fantasy and found myself partaking in the dream state as if it reality.    │ 
  1503. │ I do not recall exactly what I was dreaming but do recall it was not of    │ 
  1504. │ me running down a flight of stairs.  This time I woke with a quite         │ 
  1505. │ unsettled feeling.  Anna continued imposing herself in my dreams.  I       │ 
  1506. │ was somewhat dismayed by this.  It left me very perplexed, for I had       │ 
  1507. │ never dreamed of her before, either when she was alive or now when she     │ 
  1508. │ is dead, until I made the decision to come on this trip.  I knew she       │ 
  1509. │ was attempting to warn me of something because of all the times she        │ 
  1510. │ told me to go no further on this trip.  But she knew me, she knew I        │ 
  1511. │ would continue on despite these warnings.  The message being delivered     │ 
  1512. │ was clear.  But warn me of what was uncertain.  I dismissed the entire     │

  1526. │ the grave, were merely theories and not religious practice.  I             │ 
  1527. │ comprehend people wishing to believe these theories and respect their      │ 
  1528. │ right to do so.  I, however, had never had an experience such as this      │ 
  1529. │ to convince me they are real.  Until now that is.  But even now I could    │ 
  1530. │ not accept these things as really happening.  I've had, what some call     │ 
  1531. │ psychic flashes, but I was taught to believe this was mere                 │ 
  1532. │ happenstance.                                                              │

  1534. │ I was anxious to get started this morning.  I went to the cafe near the    │ 
  1535. │ Inn, the SchatzKonditorei and had coffee only.  Then made my way to the    │

  1544. │ the Palace date back to the early 17th century, and is the oldest          │ 
  1545. │ baroque park in Europe with fountain water plays, natural rock theater     │ 
  1546. │ and fine garden sculptures. And Monatsschlosschen with folklore museum.    │ 
  1547. │ From Hellbrunn Castle I went to Haus Der Natur, a museum of eighty         │ 
  1548. │ rooms of natural history exhibition in its variegated forms, historic,     │ 
  1549. │ geographical, biological development.  I returned to the Inn and rested    │ 
  1550. │ a bit, then showered and dressed for my last evening in this city of       │ 
  1551. │ enchantment.  I went to the Hotel Winkler on Monchsberg.  Evening          │ 
  1552. │ attire is required for this is the casino of Salzburg.  Baccarat,          │ 
  1553. │ roulette and blackjack are played according to the international rules.    │ 
  1554. │ But gambling, after all, is gambling no matter what country you are in     │ 
  1555. │ or what language you say it.  The atmosphere of the Hotel Winkler is       │ 
  1556. │ just as one would imagine.  It is almost like walking into an Ian          │ 
  1557. │ Fleming film with James Bond attending the roulette wheel.                 │

  1559. │ It was there I discovered, once again, Mr. Prescott.  He was playing       │ 
  1560. │ Baccarat, and from the looks of things, doing pretty well at the table.    │

  1568. │ the casino.  I played some blackjack, then I played at roulette and        │ 
  1569. │ moved on to another evening club.  It turned into a very entertaining      │ 
  1570. │ evening for me.  I went to a dance club and of all things, ran into a      │ 
  1571. │ friend of mine from Los Angeles.  Frank was here on vacation and was       │ 
  1572. │ taking in the local culture.  We danced quite a lot.  Before I realized    │ 
  1573. │ it, it was nearly one thirty in the morning.  I had to be up early so I    │ 
  1574. │ decided I had better leave.  I told Frank to have a nice vacation and      │ 
  1575. │ we would compare notes when we got back to L.A.  He wished me the same     │ 
  1576. │ and I left.                                                                │

  1578. │ I found myself back at the Inn at nearly two a.m.  and yet I felt very     │ 
  1579. │ restless.  I was packed and ready for our tour to begin in the morning     │

  1581. │ being watched while I sat trying to relax in my room.  I tried to read     │ 
  1582. │ but could not concentrate long enough to understand what I read.  My       │ 
  1583. │ mind was wondering and I could not shake the uneasy feeling I continued    │ 
  1584. │ to have.  Becoming exhausted I must have dozed off to sleep and began      │

  1592. │ myself in a room, it looked like a typical hotel room.  The fear or        │ 
  1593. │ terror which I had felt in the prior dreams I still felt, but it seemed    │ 
  1594. │ to be more distant from me than before.  I could sense an odious           │ 
  1595. │ feeling in this dream.  I sat up on the side of the bed.  I then had a     │ 
  1596. │ mental argument with myself regarding the significance of this dream       │ 
  1597. │ and decided to continue on, with caution, regardless of any warnings.      │ 
  1598. │ Having come to this decision I must have relaxed more because now when     │ 
  1599. │ I read, I had no trouble concentrating and soon was off to sleep.          │

  1664. │  enfeebled geniuses. Darkness seemed to enervate them. Each of the team    │ 
  1665. │  members, encased in a halogen halo or a monitor sheen, twitched furtive   │ 
  1666. │  glances left or right and impatiently awaited the closing hour.           │ 
  1667. │                                                                            │ 
  1668. │  But none of them was more anxious than Carpenter.                         │ 
  1669. │                                                                            │ 
  1670. │  The peerless technician hated the dark. The shadows triggered memories of │ 
  1671. │  a latch-key childhood in a cold tenement in New Jersey. Shafts of light   │ 
  1672. │  recalled huddling in the cold while the frightening noises of fighting    │ 
  1673. │  slipped under the door. And the dark's separation of one from his fellows │ 
  1674. │  reminded him of a night in a Yale dormitory, a night when "she" closed a  │ 
  1675. │  door on his life.                                                         │

  1677. │  No. There was no absolution for it. Carpenter hated the dark.             │

  1679. │  Yet he waited, as he had done on selected nights for the last six weeks;  │

  1701. │  KR's footsteps reverberated in the sudden silence (she loved her          │ 
  1702. │  dramatic gestures). She stepped into the center of the office and swung   │ 
  1703. │  her "evil eye" on every up-turned face. When she was satisfied with the   │ 
  1704. │  result, she came to the point.                                            │

  1741. │  on their machines anyway."                                                │

  1743. │  The boss eyed her technician suspiciously knowing his distaste for        │ 
  1744. │  isolation and darkness. But she had her own problems and he probably had  │ 
  1745. │  his reasons. The Carpenter's reasons were always good reasons.            │ 
  1746. │                                                                            │ 
  1747. │  "Okay, Carp," the boss said slowly. "Think it over tonight and whatever   │ 
  1748. │  you decide, I'll put into the schedule."                                  │ 
  1749. │                                                                            │ 
  1750. │  The master technician nodded his thanks and the boss left him, alone, in  │ 
  1751. │  the darkened isolation of the Team Eeeek Offices.                         │

  1764. │  "Stupid programmers! Haven't they ever heard of a straight line?"         │

  1766. │  It was late. It was late and he was tired. And he had never had any       │ 
  1767. │  patience with the kind of mental processes required to program the        │ 
  1768. │  beautiful memory chips and computer boards that he so loved to touch.     │

  1770. │  Hand Carpenter the chips and he could connect hair follicles to the sweat │ 
  1771. │  glands on a little toe. But don't ask him to route the signals. No, not   │

  1775. │  He was hungry but time was running out. No telling how much the boss      │

  1785. │  he talked to himself - a habit he had only just acquired - of the artful  │ 
  1786. │  machinations of his teammates.                                            │ 
  1787. │                                                                            │ 
  1788. │  "STOP!" he shouted into the empty room. "Stop! Think! Follow this thing   │ 
  1789. │  through like a nerd!"                                                     │ 
  1790. │                                                                            │ 
  1791. │  The anger in his voice surprised him; he had not realized his own         │ 
  1792. │  animosity toward the mysteries of programming. At heart he knew himself   │ 
  1793. │  to be a hands-on, shade-tree mechanic who had stumbled onto success in    │ 
  1794. │  the land of high-tech.                                                    │ 
  1795. │                                                                            │ 
  1796. │  As a teen he had restored, rebuilt or repaired everything from crystal    │ 
  1797. │  radios to an uncle's Packard. Parts he couldn't purchase, he made on his  │ 
  1798. │  father's work bench. Schematics he couldn't find he redesigned. Give him  │ 
  1799. │  a wire, give him a bit of solder and a pair of pliers, give him anything  │ 
  1800. │  he could FEEL and he would give you the Taj Mahal.                        │

  1809. │  He had to quell the madness crowding his mind. He was not used to the     │ 
  1810. │  mental frustration; nor was he comfortable with the deceit. But he had    │ 
  1811. │  started on a journey and he could not go back; it was too late. He had    │ 
  1812. │  already altered some of the company's records.                            │ 
  1813. │                                                                            │ 
  1814. │  "Think it through! Think it through!" he told himself. "What kind of mind │ 
  1815. │  would create a mess like this?"                                           │ 
  1816. │                                                                            │ 
  1817. │  He was referring to the Eeeek International in-house software. And when   │ 
  1818. │  he realized the completeness of his own question, he had the answer.      │ 
  1819. │                                                                            │ 
  1820. │  "The Team!"                                                               │ 
  1821. │  Of course! The Team had created the maze of interconnecting programs, the │ 
  1822. │  most comprehensive data analysis system in the world. But The Team had    │ 
  1823. │  also created the most comprehensive security system to protect that       │ 
  1824. │  programming.                                                              │

  1832. │  to the problem - he could feel it. "Some sort of access pattern."         │ 
  1833. │                                                                            │ 
  1834. │  He rifled through the pages of the manual in front of him looking for a   │ 
  1835. │  title, a heading, anything that suggested access to where he wanted to    │ 
  1836. │  go: the logs.                                                             │ 
  1837. │                                                                            │ 
  1838. │  "At least I've isolated the question," he reminded himself to re-instill  │ 
  1839. │  a little self-assurance.                                                  │ 
  1840. │                                                                            │ 
  1841. │  In truth he had been approaching the problem correctly; the documentation │ 
  1842. │  manuals were beginning to bear that out. For what Carpenter wanted to     │ 
  1843. │  accomplish, he required access to the programming which produced the      │ 
  1844. │  exhaustive "User Logs" of the Team's computer network.  The Logs recorded │ 
  1845. │  every entry on the Network as well as into the sub-directories, databases │ 
  1846. │  and programs. They were that part of the Team's Security System which     │ 
  1847. │  were designed and upgraded twice a year to prevent exactly what Carpenter │ 
  1848. │  was trying to do: hack into the system.                                   │

  1856. │  who is the best hacker I know?"                                           │ 
  1857. │                                                                            │ 
  1858. │  The question brought an immediate answer: "Neal!"                         │ 
  1859. │                                                                            │ 
  1860. │  Yes...Neal. The physicist was notorious in his youth for walking through  │ 
  1861. │  Government and Defense Department security systems and leaving "KillJoy   │ 
  1862. │  Was Here!" notes all over sensitive material. After frustrating the heads │ 
  1863. │  of every major branch of government over the course of three years, the   │ 
  1864. │  President offered an unconditional pardon to "the Hacker known as         │ 
  1865. │  'KillJoy'" if he would only stop.                                         │ 
  1866. │                                                                            │ 
  1867. │  Neal finally turned himself in saying, "It wasn't fun anymore." He was    │ 
  1868. │  then offered a job with the CIA which he accepted.                        │ 
  1869. │                                                                            │ 
  1870. │  "What would Neal do?" Carpenter wondered aloud. And then he remembered    │ 
  1871. │  the physicist's simple boast on the subject of hacking: "Always let the   │ 
  1872. │  program, itself, do the work."                                            │

  1886. │  commands into his computer. "Let's see. First, Control F9."  As he worked │ 
  1887. │  his way through the instructions, he took note of a godsend procedure:    │ 
  1888. │  "Restoring a Code." Before long his screen presented him with a box.      │
