How It Began! Page 9
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
For a number of years children played a game called word square. In this
game letters of words spelled out the same word horizontally and verti-
cally. This was the birth of the crossword puzzle. The first interlock-
ing words across and down appeared in England sometime in the 19th century.
But it wasn't until Americans started working the crossword puzzle that
it gained in huge popularity. Arthur Wynne was the first to place a cross-
word puzzle in "Fun" the Sunday supplement of the New York World newspaper
December 21, 1913 and it gained in popularity immediately. Eleven years
later Simon and Schuster asked the World newspaper to allow them to pub-
lish a complete book of crossword puzzles, using the writers of the World.
The idea of a book came from Simon's aunt who wanted to give a gift to a
puzzle loving friend. The book was such a hit that another was published
and then more. Today crossword puzzle books are published in every lang-
uage with the exception of the Oriental languages which do not lend allow
for across and down manipulation.

Headline: Woman Runs Over Herself With Car

Story: 52 year old grandmother accidentally ran over herself with her own
car today. As she drove down the street she saw a belt in the
middle of the street. She stopped her car, holding her foot down
on the brake, she opened the door and reached out to get the belt.
Just as she did her foot slipped off the brake pedal, the car began
to move forward and she fell out of the car. The vehicle ran over
her leg. Her grandson reached over with his hand and placed it
firmly on the brake pedal, stopping the car. A passerby saw the
predicament the two were in, stopped to assist them. The woman is
in the hospital under observation.

HeadLine: Man Ticketed For DUI On A Lawnmower

Story: A man was pulled over by police today and given a ticket for driv-
ing under the influence while driving his 5 horsepower riding lawn-
mower. The man had his driver's license suspended for drunken
driving five years before this and he felt certain he would be per-
mitted to drive his lawnmower.

Not Common! Page 13
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
* For the person who doesn't want to be forgotten and really wants to
shuffle off the mortal coil but leave a word behind we've the perfect,
but unusual item. How about purchasing from the Eternal Monument Company
of Pompano Beach, Florida an electronic tombstone? Prior to one's death,
assumably, the customer must go to the company to be filmed and have
his voice recorded so the tape can be placed in the tombstone and played
anytime someone pushes the button. Immortality on tape!
* William G. Hail committed suicide in the most unusual manner. He bored
eight holes in his head with a power drill.
* Speaking of suicide, the most unusual policy regarding suicide was on the
ancient island of Cheos. If a person wanted to commit suicide they would
consult their legislator who in turn would announce it in the Senate.
The senate would then discuss the pros and cons of such an action and
either grant permission or refuse it.
* One of the worst 'miracles' performed was in 1966 by a Hindu yogi named
Rao. Rao told everyone he would walk on water. Tickets were sold to
miracle event, some selling for as much as $100 a piece. The day came,
Rao stood next to a five foot deep pond of water. He prayed in silence.
He stepped out onto the surface of the water and sunk almost immediately.
He did not refund any money.

About The Past, By Brian Page 20

AFTER DINNER VOMIT: Eating tends to make you feel full. However, this
was no problem to the Ancient Romans who wanted to keep on trying the new
kinds of food. They would just take a feather and tickle the back of
their throats vomiting up everything they had just eaten, and start
eating again! Special rooms were made for the vomiters so they did not
stop other people from eating.

AND WHILE WE ARE ON THE SUBJECT.......... In Charles II's reign, dog
urine was told to improve the complexion.

YUMMY YUMMY: Eating habits have changed drastically in the last hundred
years. Here is a menu for a meal served to Henry VIII and 30 guests: 800
eggs, 90 dishes of butter, 50 loaves of bread, 300 wafers of marzipan,
plus 6 apples, 7 pears & 10 oranges per person. The serious part of the
meal consisted of roast beef, veal, lamb, capons, plovers, woodcock,
partridges, herons, snipe, leverets and lambs tongues. To wash all this
down each drank 2 1/2 gallons of beer & wine. Henry had meals like this
served every day. Not everything was necessarily eaten by the guests but
Henry grew very fat by eating like this. His waistline increased by 16"
in 5 years. Ropes & pulleys were used to haul him to his 13 foot-wide bed.

About The Past, By Brian Page 21

TEA ANYONE?: When tea was first introduced in the American colonies many
housewives were unfamiliar with the correct method of making tea, served
the leaves with sugar or syrup after throwing away the water in which
they had been boiled.

LICE CRISPIES: Until the nineteenth century, just about everyone had
lice, fleas, or sometimes even both. In the seventeenth century, it was
considered bad manners to take lice, fleas or other things from your body
and squish them between your fingers in company.

DIRTY DAMSEL: Public bathes were open in Britain in the late seventeenth
century. But really the wealthy were the ones who used them. Samuel
Pepys mentions his wife going one time, but this was the only time in
nine years of writing in his famous diary that he told of his wife
bathing.

EARTHQUAKING FASHIONS: In 1925 short skirts became fashionable. Some
people could not cope with the frequent sight of women's legs. The
Archbishop of naples in Italy said the recent earthquake at Amalfi was
because of God's anger at a skirt that reached no farther than the knee.

Accustomed 2 Customs! Page 22
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
* The custom of thumbs up or thumbs down has been with us since Roman days!
The emperor would give a thumbs up or a thumbs down depending upon how
the gladiator performed in the arena. This is what most people believe
but it just isn't true. The truth is, the first known use of this ges-
ture was by a French painter in 1873. The painting was called Pollice
Verso in which the emperor was making a thumbs down gesture. The use of
this gesture in the Roman arena never had any direct meaning assigned
to them. Not only was the thumb used in an up and down motion but also
in a side motion. But what the significance of this was never was clear.
Today the use of the thumb up or down is easily understood and the side-
ways thumb is commonly used for hitchhiking.
* Women wearing high heels seems to be a custom that has been with us since
the seventeenth century. The French invented this custom. Though a
great many people believe this was probably one of the worst customs to
have around, since the wearing of high heels can cause all types of back
problems as well as foot problems. Originally this custom was reserved
to only the royal and upper class noble women who wanted to give the
impression of being above all the common folks. Well the common folks
decided they liked the idea of elevating women on high heels because this
held them on the pedestal some men believed they belonged.

Those Were The Days! Page 26
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I sat down and poured myself another cup of coffee. Looking out the win-
dow I could see my son playing with the dogs in the back yard. I took a
deep breath and started thinking about his childhood versus mine. Today,
well today kids just don't know how to play. They think they need some-
thing electronic to play and have fun. They just don't know. I started
thinking back to when I was a child. I can remember, right after Christ-
mas, all the kids in the neighborhood would go from house to house asking
if we could help our neighbors take down their Christmas trees. Having
done so, we then took them to the end of the street, we lived on a dead
end street, they didn't call them a cal-de-sac back then, and build a tree
fort. We'd pack snow in around the open spaces left by the trees and use
that spot as our resting place after having snowball fights and other
silly kids games we played in the snow. We actually believed the fort we
had built was warm and toasty inside. We felt warmer when we were in there
and away from the outside elements. We even talked about sleeping out in
the dead of winter inside our fort, knowing for certain we would all be
just fine as long as we were inside our fort.
In the summer time I can remember playing outside long after darkness came.
We had one street light on our street and we would gather together under
that street light. We'd find an old can from someone's trash and play
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Those Were The Days! Page 27
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
kick the can. Yeah, they really did play kick the can back in those days.
I can remember running to hide. It was a hot, humid Illinois summer night
and I could feel the excitement of the game coursing through my being. I
would giggle to myself as I hid in the shadows of the huge old oak tree and
watch the person who was 'it' race around trying to find someone, anyone
so they could pass the title of being 'it' on to them. My son will never
feel that type of excitement or thrill. I can still remember the feeling
when the person who was 'it' spotted you and both of you made a mad rush
to the can, placed carefully under the one glowing street light. One runn-
ing to kick the can and the other racing to tag it and yell ollie, ollie
oxen free, meaning everyone could run to the can now and not be it.
Yeah, those were the days! Kids knew how to play and have fun. We never
had to worry about being out at night. Unless, of course, you had a big
brother. Because big brother would always try to play some prank on you.
He'd always try to scare you somehow. But even that was alright, because
once it happened a few times you came to expect it and even enjoyed the
game of being frightened by some stupid stunt he'd pull.
But in spite of the pranks big brother played, he was the best one to crawl
out the bedroom window with and sit on the porch roof and watch the stars
late at night on those hot summer days. Who could sleep? Air conditioning
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
was something only the rich had or some place of business had. So we took
refuge on the roof. The two of us would sit and talk about anything and
everything. We talked about all the problems in the world and about noth-
ing. I stop and wonder, every once an a while, if my brother remembers
these talks or not, as I do. No matter.
I can also remember walking, yeah, what a concept, walking, to the city
swimming pool. We had to cut through a cemetery to get there quickly. If
we went around that cemetery it would take us easily a mile more in dis-
tance to get to the city pool. If I walked with just my brother and his
friends, not taking any of my friends along, those big dumb jerks would
always go into the cemetery with me and start telling me some weird story
about the place and about mid-way through they took off running, leaving
me behind with fear rising quickly in my heart. I tried, as hard as I
could, to stay up with them, but never could I. They being boys and two
years older than me. But even that, in retrospect, was fun and funny. My
brother was always paid back by me short sheeting his bed.
My thoughts are pulled away from the past as my son comes back into the
house with the dogs romping in, still in a playful mood. I call him over
and tell him about the game of kick the can. I tell him everything, so
he and his friends can try playing it that night on the cal-de-sac we now
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'

live. He thinks it sounds 'cool' so he calls some of his friends and asks
if they can play tonight. Each asks their parents and tells them what they
intend playing. I'm sure, someplace deep inside them, the idea of their
child playing kick the can, as they did once, spurs some hope in them as
well as brings back some of that childhood memories. Each parent says
their child can play. Darkness comes and the kids head out the door to
one street light on the cal-de-sac. I can hear them playing and laughing
as the game gets underway. About ten minutes or so goes by and I hear the
familiar sound of the can being kicked down the pavement. It bounces as
it hits then rolls. Moments later my son walks back into the house.
"What happened to the game," I ask.
"We called it off," he says.
"Why?" I ask.
"Because old Mrs. Doe told us she'd call the police if we didn't settle
down and stop making so much noise. I'm going to play with my Sega Mom."
'Old Mrs. Doe' was my age. She was the only woman on the street without
children. I guess she's forgotten what it was like to be a child. Or
maybe, just maybe, she never was one. Oh well, at least my son tried. I
was happy for that much.
"Mind if I play Sega with you?" I asked!

I MYTHed That One! Page 40
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
MYTH: We've all heard the phrase 'digging one's way to China' giving us
the believe that China is directly opposite the U.S. and one could
dig right through the earth and end up there. This is true right?

FACT: Nope, not true. Look at any globe and one thing you will notice is
that China and the U.S. are both in the Northern Hemisphere thus
making it impossible to dig one's way to China from the U.S. Though
the idea does make one ask, in China do they believe they can dig
their way to the U.S.?
MYTH: The parachute was invented for use in an airplane.

FACT: The parachute was invented long before the airplane was even thought
about. The first parachute can be dated years before the first
airplane and was invented in 1783. Louis Lenormand invented the
parachute to save people's lives who jumped from burning buildings.
In 1797 another type of parachute was designed to be used to jump
from hot air balloons. Even in World War I parachutes were not
used in the airplane. It was not until 1922 that the parachute was
was first employed in an aircraft. After this, it became standard
and required equipment to the Air Force.

Phrase Craze! Page 41
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
* To bite the dust: end one's action or kill an enemy. This phrase,
perhaps a surprise to many, appears in Homer's Iliad. In American the
phrase is 'bite the dust' whereas in England the phrase is 'bite the
ground or sand.' The phrase has always meant the same thing, to fail,
not succeed or to foil an enemy.
* To see the handwriting on the wall: to see the forecast of the future,
or a warning. The phrase is very old and some experts say it first
appeared in print in the Old Testament of the Bible. When Belshazzar
took the throne in Babylonia, Nebuchadnezzar declared a feast day and
reportedly said: "(they) came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote
over against the candlestick upon the plaster of the wall."
* In one ear and out the other: leaving no impression whatsoever. Though
most believe this phrase has been with us since Adam and Eve and it was
probably something Adam told Cain and Abel the earliest written form of
the phrase was not until 1583. It was written in a sermon by John Calvin.
* Mad as a hatter: to be crazy or demented. It has nothing do with anger.
The phrase was born from the twisting of the hat makers. Felt hats have
a percentage of mercury in them. Hat makers would, after prolonged labor
with felt, begin twisting as a result of the mercury in the felt. Some
believe hatter was added to show the person was really crazy.

Team Eeeek: The Dawning of An Age Page 44
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1993 would prove to be a very good year, KR thought as she gazed out of
the window of her private office.

The boss had everything to look forward to: Bee's new software
development, Debbie's bungling discovery and Carpenter's low-cost
hardware systems would push Eeeek International into a new tax bracket
before the end of the second quarter. Yes, sales were projected to be up
forty percent, even in the repressed market, and possibilities for new
software & hardware development were virtually endless into the foresee-
able future. The boss was certain to amass another fortune in 1993.

But something had turned the boss' attention away from the bright
prospects of her near future and toward the darker shadows of her past.
Maybe it was the weather.

Contrary to popular myth, it had just finished raining in Southern
California for the last week and the usually smogged-in skies were as
clear, bright and sparkly as they were intended to be. Unlike the boss'
melancholy mood. It was as if the open skies allowed her to see the dark
clouds rolling in for a second week of storm.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Team Eeeek: The Dawning of An Age Page 45
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
KR stared out on the city and forced the images there to over-ride the
darker thoughts in her mind.

The high-rises of downtown Los Angeles hemmed in her view to the south
but she had a partial view of the rolling Hollywood Hills and the Santa
Monica Mountains to the north. And she was high enough that she could see
due west along the Wilshire corridor halfway to the beautiful Pacific
Ocean.

The Pacific Ocean.

In her memory KR could still see the waves dancing off of Manhattan
Beach. In the powerful swells of winter, the glittering shimmer of spring
and the lazy illumination of summer, the Pacific had called her to the
shore to press her bare feet into the loose sand and sort out the
problems of the day.

How many of my walks had that stretch of beach sustained? she wondered.
How many of my footprints had it recorded, clung to, and lost to the
tides?
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Team Eeeek: The Dawning of An Age Page 46
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
And if the universe has consciousness, how many vows does it recall from
those difficult times? How many curses, how many tears?

The boss smiled at herself. "Indulgence!" she said aloud. "Worth less
SELF in-DULL-gence!" Then she laughed.

But the memories hung in her mind like the early morning fog along the
coast - just out of reach, not quite clouding reality, but obscuring it
enough to allow the uncertainties of the soul to come pouring in.

What days those were! When she had faced the publishing business single
handedly. And had bluffed her will onto an unruly crew of anti-social
misanthropes.

HA!

And the joke was that she had won. She had parlayed a "writing for hire"
sub-contracting service into an internationally successful magazine.
And it had been that success that had catapulted her into electronic
publishing and finally computer software development.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Team Eeeek: The Dawning of An Age Page 47
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
She chuckled as she recalled the day the wire service had come to her.

"Ms. Taghadossi," the squint-eyed three-pieced lackey had said,
"Globe-Span News, Inc. is interested in your informational processing
techniques. Would you be amenable to some sort of a share arrangement?"

Informational processing techniques? KR thought. You mean that stupid
little alteration I made to a hunk of Public Domain software? "What sort
of arrangement?" she had asked, bluffing as usual.

"We were thinking of six large figures," the pinched mouth said.

And KR had scoffed. "Yeah! Well, I was thinking of eight small ones!"

And with the proceeds of that conversation, the boss had moved out of the
printing press era and into the age of computer media. She had also moved
out of a cozy seventeen floor Manhattan Beach co-op and into a
high-profile downtown skyscraper.

"And the pressure has been increasing ever since," the boss muttered.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Team Eeeek: The Dawning of An Age Page 48
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Although she loved her new life, she occasionally missed those earlier
days when she had direct control of her company's output. She also missed
the camaraderie and the outright lunacy of her employees. They were a wild
bunch, much more out-going than her current pack of anti-social computer
nerds. Dan Powers was in the street every day and would come back to the
office with stories brimming with the sights and sounds of the city. The
"girls" - Constance North, Dorothy Ditsmire & Holly Daze - would keep the
corporate ears abuzz with their ribald society gossip. Manfred and Amanda
would peer knowingly about the offices and make their pronouncements from
"the other side." And there was effeminate Seymore Puddly as well as Art
I. Whittay, Marvin Hopps, Jake, Glo Curtis! And how about Crystanna?
Sensitive, insightful Crystanna Jaye Anders. Whenever the boss yearned for
a true friend, she missed C.J. above all.

Those were good days, attempting to fathom bizarre etchings of Captain
Quake Zyzukka, or fending off the offensive insistences of William
Tweeter, Ph.D. and the provocative suggestivity of Vanesa del Teaso.
Doctor T. R. Ustme was a bore, but the boss could lament the passing of
"Bill" Booty, world traveler and chronicler. For all his boastful
bravado, he meant only to enlighten.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Team Eeeek: The Dawning of An Age Page 49
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, they were a good bunch. And now the only one left was Hymie.
Whatever would she do with Hymie?

"ENOUGH!" KR said aloud. "Muddling through the past gets you nowhere!"
though she couldn't stop the rueful little smile from twisting her lips.
"Time to think about the present and the future!" She could not have
chosen more appropriate words. For at that very moment she heard the
present knocking on her door.
*
"Is this it, then? We're certain of the breech?"

"There can be no question of it. I didn't want to bring this in, but I
felt I had no choice. The evidence is..."

"Yes, I understand," KR said waving Razor's reluctance aside. "You did
the right thing."
Silence hung in the air like the boss' earlier mood.

Things had been going to well; something HAD to break. Maybe that's what
her mood had been trying to warn her.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Team Eeeek: The Dawning of An Age Page 50
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"What about the marketing campaign?" Razor asked softly.

KR tapped her fingers on her desk. Yes, what ABOUT the expensive nation-
wide marketing campaign? She couldn't very well go ahead with it now, but
she didn't wish to give her Sales Manager any reason to gossip or send out
any signs of alarm. Best to keep her busy, as if nothing was wrong.

"Proceed with the advertising development as scheduled," the boss said
resorting to her old tactic, the bluff, "but hold off on the launch date
until I look into this."

"Very well," Razor said doubtfully.

"Well? Hop to it!" the boss said. One thing she couldn't stand was having
employees with worried looks hanging around her desk.

She pondered the situation for a moment and then punched an intercom
button.

"Yes, Ms. Taghadossi?" said a voice from the reception desk.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Team Eeeek: The Dawning of An Age Page 51
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Locate Ms. Gabriel and ask her to report to my office."
The brief silence which greeted her request told the boss that she had
spoken too harshly. It was as though the receptionist was thinking, "You
want me to issue an ORDER to the Chairwoman of the Board?" But the
affirmative reply finally came and the boss shut down the intercom.

No telling where Gabriel was. Maybe the Polo Lounge or her club or her
estate up in the Palisades. Maybe she was lunching with the Mayor or a
Senator or two. The boss had no way of keeping up with her. She spun on
her designer director's chair and resumed her contemplation of the city.
As she had anticipated, clouds were rolling in from the west, dark, huge,
rolling things that stretched into the heavens & blackened the sky. And
suddenly all the boss' hopes for the new year were as bleak as the weather
growing outside her window. There was only one task bleaker than facing
the coming troubles, the boss thought. Then, like she often did when she
was mulling over her problems, she spoke aloud to herself.

"How am I going to tell the Chairwoman our new software has been stolen?"

To be continued.

I ran down a flight of stairs. Running, running, from what or to what
I did not know. But I knew I had to keep running. The feeling of
terror that haunted me was unmistakable. It was not fear but absolute
terror. When I reached the bottom of the flight of stairs, there in
front of me stood Anna. "What are you doing here?" I shirked. "You
can not be here. You can not be here." I had not stopped moving away
from the stairs, in spite of Anna's presence. She extended her arm as
if to stop me from going further. I moved past her and ran through the
tree lined glade that lay before me. When I reached the other side of
the glade I was stopped by a blinding light. I looked before me and
there stood Anna. I turned and looked behind me as if checking to see
if the thing which I ran from was catching up to me. I was also trying
to figure out how Anna got across the glade so quickly. When I turned
back towards her again, she simply said calmly, "Don't go on this
trip."

I woke with a start. It was only a dream. I had fallen asleep at my
desk again. I surveyed the area, I was in my apartment and all
appeared to be normal. I forced myself upright in my chair and wiped
the perspiration from my forehead and face. Then leaned back in my
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 54
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
chair thinking about the dream I had just had. These dreams had
started not too long ago. Actually they started when I made my
decision to make this trip. This one dream I have had for the last
four nights. Every night exactly the same. Every night I felt the
terror building and yet did not know why. And every night Anna was
there trying to stop me.

It became quite apparent from my dreams this vacation was not going to
be like any other vacation I have ever experienced. The oddities of
the events occurring in my dreams regarding this vacation are not to be
explained. At least I hope they are not to be explained, because the
explanation would be extremely bizarre.

It was almost summer vacation. School would be out soon. This was
important to me, for I am a teacher. I teach junior high school in Los
Angeles, California. I was finishing the final test papers of my
students when I began thinking about my trip to Europe in the very near
future. It dawned on me the near future was only two weeks away. I
still had many things to do, besides finish the papers which lay in
front of me. I also had to pack, make arrangements to stop the mail,
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 55
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
and ask a friend to come over to water my plants. Plus make
arrangements with my Mother to take her out to dinner before I leave.
I live in a nice, comfortable three story apartment building. It is a
secure building so there would not be much to be concerned about while
I was on my long awaited vacation.

Normally I spent my summers going out on digs. Archeology has become a
passionate hobby. When I was in college, I took several courses in
archeology and fell in love with the field. Frequently, my former
professors from college, ask me to join them on summer digs. My
expenses are paid and so am I. It turned out to be profitable hobby.

My attention was drawn, not to the papers and work before me but the
airline ticket laying at the top of the desk. I picked it up and
glanced at it. It said: Ms. Carol Hendrick, Los Angeles to New York,
6-19, New York to London 6-20, London to Salzburg 6-25. Again my mind
began to wonder. I had friends living in London I wanted to see, but
would only stay there briefly. I had met Rod and Audrey on a previous
trip to Europe. When I was in grad school, I took a summer off and
went to Great Britain to take some courses at the University in London.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 56
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I met Audrey at the University. We spent the summer going to plays at
the HayMarket Theater and others theaters in that area, not far from
Piccadilly Circus. Now Audrey stars in some of those theaters we saw
so many plays. It was during that same summer, Rod and Audrey met. I
did not get to attend their wedding, for it was in October and I was in
school, but did visit them the following summer.

After London, then on to Salzburg. Something I had wanted to do for
some time but never did. Not for any reasons other than just
procrastinating. My adventure would be to go to Salzburg then take a
bus tour through the Black Forest. I had thought of driving by myself,
but decided against it because of concern in getting lost. Besides, a
vacation is suppose to relieve pressure. I figured this would not be
accomplished if I drove. The sound of the dog next door barking
brought me back to the work at hand. I engrossed myself in my students
papers. They desired school to be over but what they did not realize
is I was just as eager as well. Don't misunderstand me, I enjoy
teaching. I find it challenging and very educational. I learn a lot
from the students as well as try to teach them a lot. I hoped they
could use what I taught later in their life in a job. But, with drugs,
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'

gangs, and general crimes of theft for money for drugs, then the deaths
of my friend Anna and my two students, this was more than enough for
me. I needed a vacation.

It had been an especially hard year for me. Two of my students died
from drug overdoses. All the other instructors said it was just a sign
of the times. I did not believe this. A tragedy of our time, but
hopefully not a sign. Both students were bright and good achievers.
No life should be wasted in such a manner. It angered me at the time,
and still does for that matter. They set out to commit suicide and
accomplished their goal. They just went the long way round to do so.
Before the shock of their deaths had worn off a good friend of mine, a
nun, Sister Anna Katherine died from a sudden illness. She came down
with the flu, which turned to pneumonia and within three days was dead.

Nothing seemed to have any effect on the pneumonia, it just got hold of
her and that was that. Anna and I had gone to school together. We
became friends when we were eight years old and remained good friends
for all those years. Her death was very upsetting to me. So I looked
forward to the holiday with great enthusiasm. Hoping with anticipation
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'

to put these saddening events behind me.

The term ended without further incident and I soon found myself flying
to New York. I spent one night there, enjoyed a theater performance
and then on to London. The euphoria of the trip had, by now enchanted
me. The anticipation of being somewhere I had never been, Austria.
Seeing things I had never seen before was delirium. The normal things
took place on the flight. dinner, a movie, I had one drink and then
decided to try and sleep.

The hum of the jet engines droned on into my ears. Their sound induced
a restfulness that encouraged sleep.

I found myself running down a highway. The highway was empty of cars
and other people. When I ran for what seemed to be several blocks I
came to the top of a small hill. I ran down it, quickly. When I
reached the bottom there stood Anna. She extended her arm and motioned
for me to stop. I continued running, down the highway, past Anna. I
did not want to stop. When I reached the crest of the next hill I was
halted by a blinding light. There stood Anna. I stopped and looked at
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
her. She ordered, "Go no further than Great Britain. Take your
vacation in England only and do not go beyond."

The change in the sound of the jet engines woke me. We were coming in
for our landing. I collected my thoughts, or at least tried to do so.
I could not understand these warnings. I was determined however, to
make this trip. I had wanted it for too long to give it up now.
Especially on the bases of a dream.

When the plane touched down at Heathrow the sun was shining, dimly but
none the less shining. It was typical June weather. My friends, Rod
and Audrey, were there to meet me, as expected. My first night with
Rod and Aud was simple, but relaxing. Audrey had to be in a
performance at the theater, after which, we went out for a late dinner.
Then home.
I was glad I had slept on the plane for a few hours. Even though the
sleep was not sound because of the dream, it was still some sleep. The
time change and jet lag was hard enough adjust to.

My second, and first full day with Rod and Audrey was spent doing the
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 60
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
normal tourist bit. Audrey did not have to be at the theater until the
evening, as there was no matinee. Rod runs his own import business so
he simply delegated authority so he could take whatever time he wanted.
We made a trip to Whitechapel, to the Tower of London and to Tower
Bridge. I find this area to be most interesting. You can almost hear
the sounds of the city as it was during Dickens' time. I am somewhat
of a history buff, so I find things like this very stimulating.
I was not one for the normal tourist tripe, not really, and Rod and Aud
knew this. I had grown up in fairly wealthy family and we had traveled
extensively throughout my growing years. My father had died in an auto
accident when I was three. My mother, on the other hand, is still
alive and is still fighting for her principals. She was into women's
liberation long before it was fashionable. She staunchly fought her
way into law school and then determinedly made her career choice to
become a judge. The law became commonplace in our home. I believe,
though Mother never once said anything, she truly expected me to go
into law as well. Follow in her foot steps so to speak. I found the
law too inflexible and cold, so I went into teaching. My mother
thought this foolish, but accepted my choice without too much argument.
I suppose she knew I would be unhappy pursuing a career in law. She
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 61
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
has never once said anything regarding her disappointment in my
decision, though I am certain she surely felt some. We did not agonize
over this difference of thought for she has great respect for my
convictions as do I for hers. When you spend the greater portion of
your life living with just one other person you come to respect and
understand that person or you come to despise that person. Fortunately
we came to respect and understand each other, as well as love one
another.

I had wanted her to meet me in Salzburg and take the tour with me
through the Black Forest. She declined, due to commitments. Which
simply meant two things, one she thought I should enjoy this trip alone
and meet new and interesting people without the influence from a mother
hanging on my neck. And two, she did not want to take time away from
the bench. She still has the same passion for the law that spurred her
on thirty one years ago.
Rod, Audrey and I did manage to stop at Carey Street, the home of
barristers in London. Rod took a picture of me in front of a stately
old building and we sent it off to my mother. Rod jokingly wrote on
the bottom of the Polaroid picture, 'Future Barrister to the Queen!?!?'
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 62
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
He thought it quite funny. I on the other hand knew it would not be
received with the same humor intended.

On the third day, Rod insisted we go to this park in the heart of
London. It is commonly referred to as Double Ganger park. Legend says
if you go into this park and see your double it is an indication you
will die soon. The three of us went, Aud and I reluctantly. We both
knew Rod would attempt to play some sort of trick on us. He has a
great sense of humor but sometimes carries things a little too far. I
am not certain if I saw my double or if I was influenced by the power
of suggestion and the ribbing and teasing of Rod. Audrey insists there
was nothing there. I being more practical in nature wanted to believe
her. Rod on the other hand insisted he had seen my double. I
dismissed his statements. Audrey pointed out the only person, as to
the legend, who could see their double was the person's who double
appeared. This incident did not cause me any sleepless nights. I only
mention it because it seemed to be the prelude to what was yet to come.

The rest of the day was spent dragging Rod through Harrods, the most
luxurious shopping area, probably in the world. Then we made him take
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'

us to Oxford Street, another highly reputable area of shops. Small
payment for his practical jokes and teasing.

We spent each of our evenings at the theater, waiting for Audrey to
finish. One evening Rod and I did make it over to St. James Street to
Boodle's, an eighteenth century gambling club. It was here I met Thomas
Prescott, a friend of Rod's. He was charming, to say the least. He is
ruggedly good looking and a gentleman of some means. I did enjoy his
company and wished, briefly, I could stay in London for a few more
days. However, Mr. Prescott mentioned to Rod , as we were leaving the
club, he would be away on that holiday Rod had suggested, for a
fortnight. Rod told me on the way back to the theater, where we were
to meet Audrey, that Prescott was a nobleman. He worked in banking, a
major business in London. (If you are not the flavor of the month with
the banks, in London, then you are not going to succeed in the business
world). He had a lot of power in the city and more importantly, Rod
nudged my side, he is single. I laughed and asked Rod if Aud knew he
had been attempting to match make. "Are you kidding," he said, "she
was the one to come up with the idea in the first place." I choose not
to verify this with Audrey. Though I did not believe Rod.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
We got back to the theater just in time. Audrey had just finished
changing out of her costume. She had already removed her stage make up
and put on her regular make up. She was behind the dressing screen
when Rod and I got there.

"So, what did you two do tonight?" Audrey questioned.

"I took our friend to Boodle's", Rod responded.

"Did you have dinner there? Or did you decide to wait for me?"

"We decided to wait for you Aud." I responded. "Where would you like
to go?"

"How about something different tonight? Let's go home and I'll throw
something together."

"Sounds good to me. But only if you let me help with the cooking."

"Let's go ladies. I'm hungry." Rod stood impatiently waiting.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
We drove back to Rod and Aud's house. When we got there Audrey and I
got started in the kitchen, while Rod made drinks for each of us. When
we finished dinner, Rod excused himself and went into the library for
his evening cigar. Audrey and I relaxed with a cup of coffee in the
sitting room.

"Audrey," I started out cautiously, "do you believe dreams can be
meaningful. I mean, do you think they can give you warnings? Or come
true?"

"Yes, I suppose they can. But I don't think I've ever had any dream
that gave me this feeling. Why, what's happening with you? I've
noticed you seem to be preoccupied with something. What's troubling
you Carol?"

"I've been having reoccurring dreams Aud. I don't understand why. But
the dream is the same each night or nearly the same. I find myself
running down a flight of stairs, then when I get to the bottom of the
stairs I meet a friend of mine. This friend is dead, in real life that
is, but in the dream she appears to be very much alive. She warns me
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'

not to take this trip. Then I wake up and I feel terrified."

"Have the dreams changed any since you got here?"

"No. Well, yes in a way. My friend no longer says not to take this
trip. She now says not to go beyond Great Britain."

"How long have you had these dreams?"

"They started the second week of May. Two days after I decided to make
the trip. At first they were just strange dreams, feelings more than
anything. I would wake and not remember anything but the feeling of
terror. It was not fear either, it was terror."

"I don't know much about dreams. I do know a lot of people believe
they are indications of things to come. But what their actual meaning
is I don't know."

"What would you do if you were in my place?"

`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'

Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 67
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I can't really say. I know you want to make this trip but ..." Audrey
did not finish her sentence. She sat looking past my shoulder, as if
transfixed by something behind me. Audrey's face appeared to be
frozen. I could not tell if she was held by fear or by astonishment.
I turned around to see what it was she was seeing. There behind me,
over my right shoulder was a figure. The figure was obviously not
solid, for I could see the painting on the wall behind it, through the
figure. I looked at the face, but could not distinguish any features.
Suddenly it faded from view. I turned back around, Audrey's face was
drained of all expression and color.

"Are you alright Audrey?" I asked, as I stood and moved over to the
couch and sat next to her. "Are you alright?"

She still did not answer. She sat, looking at the area were the figure
had appeared. I carefully and gently touched her arm. She had no
reaction, it was as if she did not feel me or hear me. Finally I
reached around in front of her and grabbed her other arm and pulled her
toward me, to twist her slightly so her body was no longer facing the
area the figure had appeared.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'

Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 68
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Audrey, are you alright," her face now facing me.

"What was that?"

"Who was that is more accurate."

"Okay, who was that? Was that Anna?"

"No. I could not make out the face, but it was not Anna."

"How do you know? If you could not make out the face."

"The feeling," I could see Audrey starting to relax a bit, so I let go
of her arms. "It was different than the feeling I had in the dreams.
It was someone else, but it was not evil."

"You could sense this? All I could sense was dread of forthcoming
events."

"It was not a harmful figure. It was a figure here to give a warning
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 69
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
or protection. I don't know which. But this is what I sensed."

Audrey, with great suddenness, turned towards me and grabbed my
shoulders, shock me and screamed in fear, "You can't make this trip
Carol. You must go no further than you have. Something awful is going
to happen."

"Relax Aud," I responded as calmly as possible, as I broke the hold she
had on me. "I have to make this trip. No matter what the warnings, I
must make this trip."

"Are you crazy? Something terrible is going to happen. You could ..."

"Stop." I interrupted her. " Stop right now Audrey. You are only
getting yourself more upset. How long have we known each other
Audrey?"

"Almost eight years, why?"

"In all the time we have known each other, have you ever known me to
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 70
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
talk about things like this? Or have you ever known me to change my
mind once I have decided to do something? I mean without more tangible
evidence and more solid proof than what I have received."

"No. You always seem to want solid, provable facts."

"So, do you think I should succumb to these events without more
tangible evidence?"

"Well you could. Just for safety's sake. If nothing happens to the
people on the tour you were to take then you can have a good laugh
about it. If something does happen, then you can count yourself
lucky."

"I figure I'm lucky already. I'm taking this trip, fully aware of the
warnings. I'm going on it with my eyes open and knowing full well that
there is the possibility of something happening."

"So you are going? Without regard to the consequences."

`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 71
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Yes. I can't explain it, but when we first started talking about my
dreams I was not sure I could make the trip. But now, after having
seen this figure, I know I must go. But don't worry. I'm not going
with total disregard to the consequences nor am I going without full
knowledge that something strange or odd lies before me."

"I wish I could talk you out of this. Had you said anything to your
Mother about your dreams?"

"No I did not. And don't you get any bright ideas," I could see the
wheels turning in Audrey's mind. She was thinking of calling my Mother
and having her convince me not to go.

"Perhaps she could give you some insight on all of this. I mean she is
a judge, she deals with facts all the time."

"Precisely why she would not understand this. Just stop thinking that
way. All that would happen is we would end up in an argument, she
would be angry, I would be angry, and I would still go. And then have
to deal with an angry Mother when I got home."
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 72
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I know what you say is true. But I still think you should not go."
Audrey got up, walked over to the bar, located at the other end of the
sitting room. She poured two brandys and came back, handed me one and
then sat down beside me once again.

"I don't know about you, but I need this. I've never had an experience
like this before. I hope I never have another one. You surprise me
Carol, you seem to have taken this whole incident very calmly. Have
you experienced this before?"

"No I haven't. I surprise myself, Audrey. I don't even know if I
believe in this sort of thing."

"I suppose that is why you don't feel it necessary to stay here. And
not go any further, as you've been warned."

"I suppose."

We both sat quietly, sipping at our brandy. I did not want to talk any
further on this subject, and hoped Audrey could sense this. Rod joined
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.

us and complained that we had not poured him a brandy. Aud went and
got Rod his brandy and then the three of us sat and played a hot game
of Scrabble. Audrey continued to let the events of the evening invade
even the Scrabble game. She used words like psychic, haunt and even
ghost to win the game.

At one thirty we all said good night and went off to bed. I was once
again tormented in my dreams. I found myself running down the same
proverbial flight of stairs, and Anna at the bottom of them. I always
ran past her, but this time I did not run through the glade. Instead I
was suddenly running down a beach. I was having trouble running
because the sand was deep. When I moved to the waters' edge it became
easier to run but suddenly I ran head long into a bright light. This
light was different than the other times, it was as if it were a wall
of light and I could move no further. I stopped and Anna stood before
me. She warned me again not to take this trip. She said that evil lay
before me and harm could come to me. I woke at this point. And again,
I choose to ignore the warning.

Strrrrrrrange BITS! Page 75
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The young girl had been sent to the United States to attend college. Also
it was a means to keep her safe in war torn Europe. She lived at the
sorority house for Jewish girls. The year, 1940. Then word came from
Germany and the young girl was told her parents had been killed in one
of the German concentration camps. So distraught by the news and over-
come with grief the young girl hung herself.
Today, 53 years later, the young girl still lives at the house. Today
it is a the place for Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. The members of the
fraternity don't find the girl's presence that peaceful however.
The room the girl reportedly hanged herself was room 310. She tied a rope
to a radiator then threw herself out the one large window in the room.
One frat brother had an embarrassing experience in this room. He went out
to take a shower and when he returned his roommate left the room, so he
could dress. He had come back only in a towel and once his roommate left
he took the towel off and he suddenly heard a girl giggle. He searched the
room, he found nothing. He had wrapped the towel around him once again.
Now he removed the towel again. Again there was another giggle. Again
he searched the room and found nothing. He called out to his roommate, but
his roommate obviously didn't hear him. He was certain someone was playing
a trick on him. But when his roommate did return he was assured no joke
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Strrrrrrrange BITS! Page 76
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
was being played. Each and every time one of them came in from the shower
wearing only a towel then went to dress, they would hear a girl giggle.
Others who used this room reported more strange events. Two other frat
brothers reported hearing footsteps at night, walking across the room then
the wicker chair sounded as though someone was settling down in it.
One of the roomies, whose bed was right next to the wicker chair, reported
hearing a female voice. He got up many an evening to check out the room,
trying to make certain no one else was there. But each time he found noth-
ing.
Everyone staying in the room has complained of excessive heat. But one
man decided to challenge the ghost. He said openly to his frat brothers,
while he sat in the room working on his computer, "if any ghost wants to
come get me, I defy them to try." Just as he completed his statement the
screen on his computer went completely blank. He checked everything, the
CRT was plugged into the wall still, and was still connected to the comput-
er. But the switch to the CRT had been turned off. No one, except him,
was near the machine and he had his back to the machine at the time.
If the story of the suicide is nothing more than legend then someone needs
to explain some events that have taken place in this room. One student,
renting the room during the summer session, reported seeing a young girl
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Strrrrrrrange BITS! Page 77
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
take a rope, tie it around something, for the radiators had been removed
and replaced with a standard furnace, then place the rope around her
neck and walk over to the window. A moment later, the student reported,
the girl disappeared before his eyes. The student told his roommate about
this event and his roommate confessed he had seen the very same thing a
few nights before. Since that time, neither of them would be in the room
alone.
The house just looks like it is haunted. It stands high and commands a
presence by itself. The Gothic windows and huge front porch promote an
even more eerie feeling. If it had been planned, it could not have been
a more perfect looking house to have haunted.
It is the frat house on the campus in Columbia, Missouri. Reports of many
different events still filter out into the press. The press has a lot of
pleasure poking fun at the stories coming from the fraternity men. But
those living in the house, and especially those in room 310, there isn't
much to laugh about.
No formal investigation has ever been done. No psychic has ever been call-
ed in to try to put the woman to rest. The perfect situation would be to
allow the lady to have the room to herself, but with all the students that
won't be possible.

Intn'l Financier To Give $25 Million To Macedonia Page 80
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
MACEDONIA, 1-5/US Newswire: George Soros, the Hungarian-born founder &
president of The Soros Foundations, will provide a $25 million revolving
loan to the government of the Republic of Macedonia in an effort to assist
the country's survival through the winter. Macedonia has yet to be
officially recognized by European Community states, the U.S., & the
United Nations, & is therefore not eligible to receive aid from major
international financial organizations. The loan is meant to raise the
world's awareness to the critical & dangerous situation in Macedonia
today. Soros commented, "The government of Macedonia is a coalition of
moderate Macedonians & Albanians. It is trying very hard to preserve a
multi-ethnic society, but is threatened from all sides: Macedonian
extremists on one side, Albanian extremists on the other. The present
Yugoslav government has a great interest in fomenting trouble & the Greek
government seems intent on preventing an independent Macedonia from
existing at all. Lack of heat & other economic hardships are exacerbating
ethnic tensions. If there is conflict in Macedonia, it is likely to
degenerate into a general Balkan war; on the other hand, if a multi-ethnic
society can survive there, it would help to contain the turmoil that has
engulfed the region. The time to recognize Macedonia is now. Why must
we always wait until conflict actually breaks out before we act?"

US Sues Four Colorado Farmers for False Claims Page 81
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
DC, 1-6/US Newswire: The Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against
4 farmers, alleging they defrauded the Dept of Agriculture by submitting
false claims for payments to the Commodity Credit Corporation. Assistant
Attorney General Stuart M. Gerson, head of the Civil Division, said the
complaint was filed in US District Court in Lincoln, NE, against Larry
Bond of Joes, CO; Kent Crawford of Eaton, CO; & Jack Bond & Randy Bond,
both of Greeley, CO The complaint alleged that the defendants made false
statements to CCC for program payments from at least 1985 through '87
while enrolled in a crop subsidy program admin'ed by the Agricultural
Stablization & Conservation Service. The defendants received $815,116 in
payments, of which at least $500,000 they weren't entitled to. According
to the complaint, the defendants in signing contracts to receive payments,
represented themselves as separate entities as defined by the program &
were therefore entitled to individual payments. The government said the
claims by Bond, Bond & Crawford each individual financed his own farming
operation were false because Jack Bond financed portions of the costs of
farming the land for which they received payments & that Larry & Randy
Bond & Crawford did not own their own equipment as they claimed. The
complaint said CCC paid an inflated amount for the program payments by
relying on the defendants' misrepresentations.

First Issue of Virginia Public Facilities Bonds Sold Page 82
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
RICHMOND, 1-8/US Newswire: State Treasurer Moore announced that the first
issue of Commonwealth of Virginia Public Facilities Bonds were sold. Gov.
Wilder joined the Treasury Board in accepting bids for the $100 million
bond issue, which will provide funds for capital projects for higher
educational facilities, parks & recreational facilities & mental health
facilities. The bonds, which were approved by voters of the commonwealth,
will be backed by a pledge of the full faith & credit of the commonwealth.
Wilder stated he was very pleased with the results of the bond sale. "I
am pleased the commonwealth could so quickly implement a bond financing
that the voters approved just last November. These funds should greatly
assist in priming the pump of the commonwealth's economy." The bonds were
sold to a syndicate of underwriters headed by The First Boston Corp. The
syndicate included Craigie Inc. & Davenport & Co. Inc., both of Richmond.
The low bid resulted in a true interest cost of 5.5136%. True interest
cost is a common measure of the cost of borrowing, & was the basis of the
award of the bonds. Moore stated the bids received were quite aggressive.
"We received 5 bids for the bonds, ranging from 5.5136% to 5.5350%. The
small difference between the high & low bids indicates that the market
understands & appreciates the commonwealth's high credit quality." VA is
1 of 5 states to hold Triple A rating from the 3 credit rating agencies.

Ass't Attorney General of the Environment & Natural Resources Division of
the US dept of Justice in DC, announced Hansen Container Corp sentenced
for violating federal environmental law in the operation of a used-drum
recycling facility in CO. Hansen Container Corp entered a plea of guilty
on 8-20-92, pursuant to a plea agreement, to one felony count of storage
& disposal of hazardous waste at its Grand Junction facility. Previously,
Hansen Jr, the co's president, & Bilney, the company's administrative

Junction facility in '87 during which time Hansen Container Corp operated
a drum reconditioning facility. Hansen Container obtained used 55 gallon
drums from a variety of industrial sources & collected the drums at its
Grand Junction site. Employees would dump liquid hazardous waste onto
the ground & burn hazardous waste which remained in the used drums. The
co operated the burner illegally & caused dense plumes of black smoke &
lead waste to be released into the environment. Some of the wastes that
were dumped included acid, pesticides, solvents & lead- contaminated
wastes.

AIDS Is Key Concern of Black State Legislators Page 84
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

DC, 1-11/US Newswire: The National Black Caucus of State
Legislators regards the HIV/AIDS epidemic as an issue of primary
importance which threatens not only the health of many of its
constituents, but the very survival and existence of this nation's
African American community, NBCSL President, Colorado State Sen.
Regis F. Groff, said today. Further action came in May 1992 when
Groff, NBCSL Health Committee Chair, Rep. Roscoe Dixon (D-Tenn.)
and NBCSL Human Services Chair Rep. Margaret Carter (D-Ore.) led
an NBCSL-sponsored conference with its sole topic as the HIV/AIDS
crisis in the African American community, one of the first major
African American organizations to do so, Groff said. At its 16th
Annual Legislative Conference in December 1992, NBCSL passed three
HIV/AIDS related resolutions, Groff said proudly. These call for
the use of Needle Exchange and Distribution Programs to reduce the
spread of the HIV virus; an increase in the number of HIV/AIDS
Programs that are culturally sensitive to the African American
community; and, the replication of the HIV/AIDS program model
designed by the New York based Black Leadership Commission on
AIDS.

DOJ Issues Business Review Letter of Cleveland Hospitals Page 85
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
DC, 1-7/US Newswire: The Department of Justice announced it does not
intend to challenge under the antitrust laws a proposal by Case Western
Reserve University School of Medicine & University Hospitals of Cleveland
to use a single agent to negotiate contract terms & fees with third-party
payers on behalf of the 19 separate physician practice groups that provide
medical care @ UHC. The position was set forth in a business review letter
from Gidley, acting assistant attorney general in charge of the Antitrust
Division, to Gregory G. Binford, counsel for UHC, a teaching hospital
affiliated with Case Western. Under the proposal, UHC would designate a
single agent to negotiate with third-party payers on behalf of all the
physicians who are organized into different practice groups according to
medical specialties. Each practice group would provide the agent with a
list of medical procedures & related ranges of prices for negotiating fees
for each procedure. Third-party payers would be advised that they would be
free to conduct negotiations directly with any group. Each practice group,
similarly, would be free to conduct negotiations directly with a third-
party payer. If negotiations proceeded through the agent, each practice
group would be free to accept or reject the agent-negotiated contract.
If any group rejected the negotiated contract, that practice group could
renegotiate or decide not to contract.

Super Collider News Page 88
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
U.S., Russia Sign Agreement on Super Collider
------------------------------------------------------------------------
DC, 1-6/US Newswire: Secretary of Energy Watkins signed a
government-to-government agreement today between the United States
Department of Energy and the Russian Federation Ministry of Atomic Energy
(MINATOM) for a program of collaboration on the Superconducting Super
Collider (SSC). The Low and Medium Energy Boosters are two of a sequence
of five accelerators at the SSC. The 0.35 mile (0.54 km) Low Energy
Booster will receive beams of protons from a linear accelerator at an
energy of 600 million electron volts and boost their energy with radio
frequency pulses to 11 billion electron volts. The 2.4 mile (4 km)
Medium Energy Booster will further accelerate the beams to 200 bllion
electron volts. Both these boosters use resistive electromagnets to
guide the protons. The beams then will enter a 6.7 mile (10.8 km) High
Energy Booster that will increase the protons' energies to 2 trillion
electron volts and then inject the beams in opposite directions into the
main 54 mile (87 km) collider rings to be guided by superconducting
magnets. The collider will then further accelerate the two beams to 20
trillion electron volts so that the resulting collision between the beams
will occur with a total energy of up to 40 trillion electron volts.
