  140. │ this.  Whether Woody overstepped his parental bounds with a step child,    │
  141. │ or whether he really is a child molester, we may never know.  What we DO   │
  142. │ know is that some ad-man out there undoubtedly got paid big bucks for the  │

  796. │ Here it is almost New Year's Eve and what would an issue of Eeeek BITS! be │
  797. │ without discussing the custom of this celebration and the singing of the   │
  798. │ song "Auld Lang Syne."  I'm sure we have discussed this before but for     │
  799. │ those of you who haven't seen the article on these two subjects, here we   │
  800. │ go again.  New Year's Eve is celebrated with a bang and has been for a     │
  801. │ great many years.  The custom comes to us from a primitive custom.  Way    │
  802. │ back primitive people believed the best way to bring in a new year was to  │
  803. │ bang drums, scream, cry and dance.  The reason, they believed this action  │
  804. │ would keep the demons from entering the next year.  In this way they could │
  805. │ prepare the year and insure it would be a good year and not one of any     │
  806. │ negative energies.                                                         │
  807. │ The singing of Auld Lang Syne comes from a custom of singing this song at  │
  808. │ the conclusion of every party.  People would join hands, stand in a circle │
  809. │ and sing this song when a party was over.  This custom began in the British│
  810. │ Isles in the eighteenth century.  The traditional song comes to us from    │
  811. │ the Scots and has now come to be song only on New Year's Eve, wishing the  │
  812. │ old year out and the new one in.  The words, "auld lang syne" is of a      │
  813. │ Scottish dialect and means "old Long since."                               │
  814. │  Hope you all have a wonderful New Year and please stay safe on New Year's │

  941. │ Joyce and the kids left the house making their way to the haunted home.    │
  942. │ They talked about nothing in particular as they walked the few short       │
  943. │ blocks to the old home.  Joyce deliberately tried to keep the              │
  944. │ conversation light, staying clear of any conversation about the house.     │
  945. │ She was certain the old house was and is haunted.  But she wasn't sure     │
  946. │ what any of them could do about it.  Deep down, Joyce was thrilled to      │
  947. │ be included in this adventure of her daughter's and her friends.  She      │
  948. │ had always wanted to go hunting for ghosts but never had the               │
  949. │ opportunity nor the ability to do so.  Generally, Joyce knew, it would     │
  950. │ require traveling to another location to investigate a haunting.  So       │
  951. │ the activity of investigation could end up being very expensive.           │
  952. │                                                                            │
  953. │ "So," Norm said in his normal matter of fact manner, "what is it           │
  954. │ exactly we hope to accomplish going to this house?"                        │
  955. │                                                                            │
  956. │ Joyce realized he was speaking to her.  She pulled her thoughts            │
  957. │ together, trying to bring herself back from what might have to what is.    │
  958. │ "I'm not sure what we hope to accomplish.  I would like to experience      │
  959. │ the same things you guys did.  If that doesn't happen, then I would at     │

  969. │ think hauntings are nothing more than group hallucinations?  I mean,       │
  970. │ everyone expects to see something, so they do.  That's what my folks       │
  971. │ say."                                                                      │

  973. │ "Get off the box Norm," Ray stated forcefully.  "We all know what we       │
  974. │ saw the first time we were in the house.  You saw it too.  You know        │
  975. │ darn good and well it wasn't a hallucination or anything else, other       │
  976. │ than ghosts.  You just don't want to face the fact that there are some     │
  977. │ things in this world that science and cold hard facts can't explain.       │
  978. │ So don't be a dip Norm."                                                   │

  980. │ "I'm not being a dip," Norm protested.  "I just don't know what to         │

  993. │ "Yeah, I suppose," Ray said, having no intention of arguing with Joyce.    │
  994. │                                                                            │
  995. │ The remaining portion of the walk was dedicated to mere chit chat.         │
  996. │ Nothing very important was discussed.  It wasn't long and the group        │
  997. │ found themselves in front the old house.  Norm was in the lead, and        │
  998. │ when he reached the front gate, he stopped.  Joyce looked up towards       │
  999. │ the house, studied the front of it.  Windows broken, the front door        │
  1000. │ stood open, the lawn overgrown with weeds as well as grass.  The           │
  1001. │ thought raced through her head, 'what ever possessed these children to     │
  1002. │ enter this house in the first place.'                                      │
  1003. │                                                                            │
  1004. │ "Are we ready?," Chris asked.  She was anxious to get into the house.      │
  1005. │ She wanted to show her mother the old place, as well as the ghosts.        │
  1006. │ She hoped above all that the ghosts would show themselves.  She wanted     │
  1007. │ that more than anything at that very moment.                               │

  1015. │ of children managed to remain friends all these years.  Each so            │
  1016. │ different from the other and yet the same.                                 │
  1017. │                                                                            │
  1018. │ "Now?" Billy asked, hestitating behind the others as they walked           │
  1019. │ through the front gate of the yard.                                        │
  1020. │                                                                            │
  1021. │ "It'll be okay," Joyce turned to him and said in a soothing manner.        │
  1022. │ "It is okay." Joyce reached out and touched Billy's arm, knudding him      │
  1023. │ forward towards the gate.                                                  │
  1024. │                                                                            │
  1025. │ Slowly, in silence they all walked towards the open front door.  As        │
  1026. │ they neared the porch, Joyce moved to the front of the group and took      │
  1027. │ her place next to Christine.  Christine smiled, Joyce reached out and      │
  1028. │ touched her arm, "Ready hon?" Chris nodded her head and the two of         │
  1029. │ them, side by side, entered the house.                                     │

  1040. │ "Did you hear that?" Jerry whispered.                                      │
  1041. │                                                                            │
  1042. │ "Of course we heard it," Chris answered.  "You'd think we couldn't hear    │
  1043. │ or something."                                                             │

  1045. │ "No, it isn't that," Jerry whispered.  "It is just that I wanted to        │
  1046. │ make sure I wasn't hearing things that you didn't hear."                   │
  1047. │                                                                            │
  1048. │ "I think we should go upstairs and investigate the noise," Joyce told      │
  1049. │ the young people.  All seemed to agree, though not verbally, for they      │
  1050. │ all followed her out of the room and to the foot of the stairs.  Slowly    │
  1051. │ she led them up the staircase to the second floor.  Chris moved up next    │
  1052. │ to her mother now and pointed out the first room they had seen             │
  1053. │ activity.                                                                  │

  1067. │ "You are sure you saw her in here?" Joyce asked.                           │

  1069. │ "Yes," Chris insisted.  "But the room didn't look like this, did it        │
  1070. │ guys?  It was clean.  No dust and nothing looked like it was old.  It      │
  1071. │ all looked as though it had been just placed in the room for the first     │
  1072. │ time and looked brand new."                                                │
  1073. │                                                                            │
  1074. │ "Well it looks old to me hon," Joyce said to Chris.  "Maybe you saw it     │
  1075. │ the way the woman saw it.  I don't know."                                  │
  1076. │                                                                            │
  1077. │ "But I did see it Mom, really." Chris tried to convince her mother.        │
  1078. │                                                                            │
  1079. │ "I know you did.  I'm not saying you didn't dear, I'm just saying that     │

  1089. │ "Mom we saw something in this next room down here," Chris said and         │
  1090. │ pointed down the hall.                                                     │

  1092. │ "Good, that's the room we hear the thud come from, I think." Joyce said    │
  1093. │ as she started down the hall.                                              │
  1094. │                                                                            │
  1095. │ "Wait a sec," Billy said, "are you going to just go down there, just       │
  1096. │ like that?"                                                                │
  1097. │                                                                            │
  1098. │ "Billy there's nothing to be afraid of," Joyce told him.  "Just            │
  1099. │ remember you are in control.  As long as you remember this you will be     │
  1100. │ fine."                                                                     │

  1109. │ towards the room.  Joyce pushed past the kids and walked quickly down      │
  1110. │ the hall to the room.  She was totally amazed with what she saw.  This     │
  1111. │ room, that just moments ago, looked as though it hadn't been touched in    │
  1112. │ 20 years, now appeared to fresh and new.  In front of Joyce stood a        │
  1113. │ young woman in white.  She stood near the window, her back to the door.    │
  1114. │ When Joyce entered the room the woman turned around, as if she was         │
  1115. │ aware of another presence in the room.  Joyce stood quietly watching       │
  1116. │ and waiting.  The woman watched Joyce, as though she could see her and     │
  1117. │ would actually try to communicate with her.  Joyce watched, but said       │
  1118. │ nothing.  Chris came in behind her mother and stood quietly.  She          │
  1119. │ watched as this woman in white took a position before them with her        │
  1120. │ hands outstretched, as though pleading for help.                           │
  1121. │                                                                            │
  1122. │ "What can we do," Chris asked her.  Joyce jumped slightly, surprised       │
  1123. │ that Chris was even there.  She had her attentions so focused on the       │
  1124. │ woman in white that she didn't even hear Chris walk into the room.         │
  1125. │ "How can we help you?"  Chris asked again of the woman.                    │

  1133. │ read her mind, the woman disappeared.  Chris, a moment later, began        │
  1134. │ talking in a voice no one recognized.  The woman in white had taken        │
  1135. │ over Chris and was using her as an instrument to communicate.  Joyce       │
  1136. │ was unnerved by this.  She wanted to grab her daughter and run from the    │
  1137. │ old house, but fear made her feet feel as though they were bolted to       │
  1138. │ the floor.                                                                 │
  1139. │                                                                            │
  1140. │ "You must tell," the voice said, coming out of Chris, "you must tell       │
  1141. │ the truth."                                                                │
  1142. │                                                                            │
  1143. │ "What truth?"  Joyce asked with trepidation.                               │
  1144. │                                                                            │
  1145. │ "You must tell them the truth," the voice said again, as though she        │
  1146. │ hadn't heard Joyce's question.  "Then I am free."                          │
  1147. │                                                                            │
  1148. │ "We will be happy to tell them the truth, but we have to know what         │
  1149. │ truth."  Joyce felt helpless in the situation now.  "What truth?"          │
  1150. │                                                                            │
  1151. │ Chris suddenly slumbed forward into her mother's arms.  She was not        │

  1161. │ It took several moments for Chris to recover, but when she did she         │
  1162. │ seemed none the worse for wear.  But it was enough for Joyce.              │

  1164. │ "Come on, we're leaving."  Joyce said.                                     │

  1166. │ "But Mom, we are just getting some place," Chris protested.                │
  1167. │                                                                            │
  1168. │ "I said now," Joyce said with a commanding voice.  She didn't give         │
  1169. │ Chris a chance to protest, she just grabbed her arm and pulled her out     │
  1170. │ of the room and into the hallway.  The others followed behind them.        │
  1171. │ They moved quickly but safely out of the house, Joyce closed the door      │
  1172. │ behind her once she accounted for all the kids.                            │
  1173. │                                                                            │
  1174. │ "Mom, this is a mistake," Chris protested.  "We can't help her if we       │
  1175. │ don't know what it is she wants us to reveal."                             │

  1187. │ As they walked away something beckoned Joyce to turn back towards the      │
  1188. │ house.  There on the second floor, looking out the window, stood the       │
  1189. │ lady in white, watching her guests leave.                                  │

  1280. │  he bathes," she asked as she unconsciously applied an extra spray of      │
  1281. │  imported French perfume.  "Or if he owns a pair of dress shoes."          │

  1283. │  Debbie viewed herself in her vanity mirror turning her painted face one   │
  1284. │  way and then the other. She noticed that her expensive makeup had poured  │
  1285. │  into a few new lines and that her eyelashes were spaced a bit farther     │
  1286. │  apart than they had been. She lifted a loose lash from her eye and swore  │
  1287. │  under her breath. Fluffing her long luscious golden locks she felt the    │
  1288. │  harshness of over-coloring and blow-drying. Then she frowned at a series  │
  1289. │  of split ends & brushed angrily at the fallen strands which hung mockingly│
  1290. │  to her black Bill Blas padded shoulders.                                  │

  1292. │  I wonder where he's taking me, she thought. The hand drawn "tickets" the  │
  1293. │  Krausmeyer had given her had not indicated a destination. They had simple │
  1294. │  read "Parade of Stars" in smudged pencil. Yet Debbie knew of no parades   │
  1295. │  on New Year's Eve! The next morning sure, but not the night before.       │

  1310. │  A 1993 powder blue stretch limousine met her eyes when Debbie stepped out │

  1314. │  "Whose car is this?" Debbie asked the driver. And when she was told that  │
  1315. │  the limo, the driver and the driver's assistant belonged to Ms. Gabriel,  │

  1317. │  was watching and Debbie would have to let the Krausmeyer down easy. With  │
  1318. │  any luck she would be home in time to watch the ball fall in Times        │

  1333. │  sky. "Yes, I remember," Debbie said. "Parade of Stars." Hymie smiled,     │
  1334. │  obviously happy that she remembered. For her part Debbie ground her       │
  1335. │  slightly yellowing teeth together and prayed that the evening would be    │
  1336. │  merciful. Meanwhile, the Chairwoman's chauffeur wound the limousine       │
  1337. │  through the Santa Monica mountains; they were climbing the hills over     │
  1338. │  looking the city & for the life of her, Debbie could not figure out       │
  1339. │  where they were headed. "You don't suppose this jerk is taking me to      │
  1340. │  the Observatory, do you?" she mumbled. But that was a good bet since      │
  1341. │  nothing else was up there. Dull, dull, Debbie thought.  But at least      │
  1342. │  harmless. Oh, for days in Palm Springs, nights in the Bonaventure and     │
  1343. │  men who knew how to squander their money.                                 │

  1348. │  Finally, there it was, the Krausmeyer's "Parade of Stars." Debbie found   │
  1349. │  herself seated on a boulder overlooking Sunset Blvd.  and the Los Angeles │
  1350. │  basin. Somewhere behind her and out of sight, the driver and his          │
  1351. │  assistant had secluded the car. Above her spread a canopy of lights, the  │
  1352. │  entire heavens opened into the next galaxy. And resist as she might,      │
  1353. │  Debbie couldn't help but feel the tension of the last two months draining │
  1354. │  away into that enormity. She had read somewhere that stars have magnetic  │
  1355. │  fields of their own & that their gravitational pull can be felt on earth. │
  1356. │  She imagined that these stars had gathered above for her benefit & they   │
  1357. │  were pulling the stress out of her limbs. She actually felt it traveling  │
  1358. │  out of her body, leaving her calm, almost limp and certainly at peace.    │
  1359. │                                                                            │
  1360. │  For several long, pregnant moments, she waited for the little man to make │
  1361. │  his move. She was certain he would run his arm over her shoulders, trace  │
  1362. │  a finger along the back of her hand, or gaze stupidly into her eyes.      │
  1363. │                                                                            │
  1364. │  And then he would expect a kiss. Yes, even with his thin lizard-lips, he  │
  1365. │  would want at least that much! And she could envision his disappointment  │
  1366. │  when she refused. But until he made his pass, the beleaguered office      │
  1367. │  manager could enjoy the serenity, the quiet, of these secluded hills.     │

  1374. │  Ten minutes went by in the peaceful presence of her little companion;     │
  1375. │  then 15, then 20. All the while he did nothing but, apparently, enjoy his │
  1376. │  "Parade of Stars." He gazed not into Debbie's eyes, but into the night    │
  1377. │  sky & seemed to take delight in each little twinkle as if he knew that    │
  1378. │  dainty light personally. He smiled at one, then reluctantly turned to     │
  1379. │  another, only to renew his enchanted smile all over again. From time to   │
  1380. │  time Debbie peered at the little man out of the corner of her eye noting  │
  1381. │  his contentment & ease. This wasn't the nervous creature that tiptoed     │
  1382. │  through the office all week; this was a man comfortable in his element &  │
  1383. │  the Office Manager could not help but observe the change. Here, in the    │
  1384. │  Krausmeyer's world, the little man was happy, secure, almost confident    │
  1385. │  in his knowledge of his environment.                                      │
  1386. │                                                                            │
  1387. │  Debbie would have smiled at him if she didn't think it would provoke a    │
  1388. │  come on. And out in these hills she hadn't a clue how he would act. The   │
  1389. │  experienced woman knew she could take care of herself no matter what the  │
  1390. │  weasel tried. But she was concerned that if he came on too strong, she    │
  1391. │  might have to slap him on the nose harder than she would have liked to.   │

  1397. │  to like the little guy. "Hymie," she said. "Are you going to make a pass  │
  1398. │  at me?"  Debbie's words surprised the Krausmeyer; she watched as "office  │
  1399. │  nervousness" descended upon him & his hands shook as his eyes widened in  │
  1400. │  disbelief. Possessing the experience with men that she did, Debbie could  │
  1401. │  tell that she misjudged him, making a pass was not something the little   │
  1402. │  man had even imagined.                                                    │
  1403. │                                                                            │
  1404. │  "Relax, Hymie," Debbie said. "I was just wondering." She smiled down at   │
  1405. │  him and instantly knew more about him than she had before. He probably    │
  1406. │  needed a woman in his life & hadn't the self-esteem to go out & get one.  │
  1407. │  Apparently he meant it when he asked her up into the mountains to see his │
  1408. │  Parade of Stars. "What about dinner?" Debbie asked to change the subject. │
  1409. │                                                                            │
  1410. │  At the mention of food, the little man's face brightened. He held up a    │
  1411. │  finger as if to say, 'Wait a minute!' and rose from his seat. After he    │
  1412. │  had helped her up, the two teammates climbed to the road and the          │
  1413. │  limousine. But instead of getting into the car, Hymie led them to the     │
  1414. │  rear end where the driver and his assistant had set up a small dining     │
  1415. │  table and two chairs.                                                     │

  1421. │  emanating from the trunk of the limousine set their taste buds throbbing. │
  1422. │  The entire trunk was filled with food and Debbie awaited the enjoyment of │
  1423. │  it with delight.                                                          │
  1424. │                                                                            │
  1425. │  It was during the decanting of the Cabernet Sauvignon that they heard the │
  1426. │  noise. Out in the scrub brush Debbie heard the shuffling of muffled foot  │
  1427. │  steps. Soon she saw a face, a dirty face, staring at them. Then a second  │
  1428. │  face joined the first; then a third & a fourth. Debbie thought they must  │
  1429. │  have followed the scent of food & realized that there could be others     │
  1430. │  living in the hills. The faces emerged boldly from the brush & made their │
  1431. │  way to the couple seated at the table.                                    │
  1432. │                                                                            │
  1433. │  "Evenin', folks," said the first dirty face. "How 'bout sharin' a bite or │
  1434. │  two?"                                                                     │
  1435. │                                                                            │
  1436. │  The driver and his assistant positioned themselves between the diners and │
  1437. │  the filthy men, but too many of the homeless arrived for them to hold     │
  1438. │  back. As the crowd spilled around the table, tempers rose and Debbie was  │
  1439. │  sure they would soon steal the food and ransack the car.                  │

  1445. │  grabbing handfuls of food from the trunk. But as the dirty men approached │
  1446. │  the table caught sight of the Krausmeyer, they fell back. Some of them    │
  1447. │  mumbled & Debbie heard 'Hymie' in the mist of the controlled arguing.     │
  1448. │  Slowly the men placed the food back on the plates and turned to leave.    │
  1449. │  That was when the understanding dawned on Debbie.                         │
  1450. │                                                                            │
  1451. │  "Hymie, do you know these men?" she asked. The little man stared at the   │
  1452. │  ground and remained motionless. By that lack of denial, Debbie received   │
  1453. │  the whole picture.                                                        │
  1454. │                                                                            │
  1455. │  Hymie must have been one of them! she thought. They were going to take    │
  1456. │  the food but when they recognized Hymie they stopped. But why?            │
  1457. │                                                                            │
  1458. │  Debbie looked into the Krausmeyer's lowered eyes and found shame,         │
  1459. │  embarrassment. And she knew it was not from his being where he was, but   │
  1460. │  from his not helping his former companions.                               │
  1461. │                                                                            │
  1462. │  And the men in turn were embarrassed for trying to steal from one of      │
  1463. │  their own who had made it out of the hills - from living like an animal.  │

  1471. │  She looked from the men to her companion and back again, wondering what   │
  1472. │  they would do. But the hungry men were leaving; they were not thieves,    │
  1473. │  just people who were cold and dejected.                                   │
  1474. │                                                                            │
  1475. │  As she watched the men walk toward the darkness, she heard Hymie's feet   │
  1476. │  scrape the ground as he jumped up from his chair.  Then he ran after the  │
  1477. │  men and handed one of them his plate of food. With his free hand he waved │
  1478. │  the men back, toward the trunk of food; he was inviting them to share     │
  1479. │  what he had.                                                              │
  1480. │                                                                            │
  1481. │  It wasn't long & the area behind the limousine was filled with dark men   │
  1482. │  enjoying the expensive catering provide by one of their own.              │
  1483. │                                                                            │
  1484. │  Debbie knew she had learned more about her companion; she knew she had    │
  1485. │  seen a side of him that his fellow employees had yet to see.              │
  1486. │  A side that endeared him to her.                                          │
  1487. │  A side that appealed to the warm glow she was feeling inside.             │

  1499. │  presented himself before her, she handed him the plate, smiled and asked, │
  1500. │  "Would you like gravy?"                                                   │
  1501. │                                                                            │
  1502. │  The smile that accompanied the nod on the stranger's face told Debbie     │
  1503. │  something else. It told her that the new year held a promise - a promise  │
  1504. │  of friendship and good fortune and possibility that she had not felt in a │
  1505. │  long time.                                                                │
  1506. │                                                                            │
  1507. │  "Happy New Year," she said to the filthy stranger who was gobbling the    │
  1508. │  food in front of her. And she knew she meant it.                          │

  1708. │ The lady stood doing her job when suddenly something touched her.  Quickly │
  1709. │ she turned around but no one was there.  She went back to her cooking.     │
  1710. │ Within moments someone touched her again, again she turned, again no one   │
  1711. │ was there.  Finally the third time someone touched her and she turned      │
  1712. │ quickly, spinning on her heels.  There before stood the shadowy figure of  │
  1713. │ a woman.  A moment later the figure disappeared into thin air.  But that   │
  1714. │ was not the end of her, not by a long shot.  A minute or so after being    │
  1715. │ seen the ghostly lady began throwing pottery around, crashing it on the    │
  1716. │ kitchen floor.                                                             │
  1717. │ This was not the first time the ghostly figure had been reported nor was   │
  1718. │ it the first time she threw things.  Some months earlier a young man rent- │
  1719. │ ed the apartment above the restaurant and he reported having strange dreams│
  1720. │ of a woman.  A woman he didn't know.  He described the woman as someone who│
  1721. │ had her hair piled up on her head, wearing an old-fashioned dress.  It was │
  1722. │ not long after this that he saw this very woman in the restaurant.  He was │
  1723. │ quite shaken by her appearance; for he could see right through her.        │
  1724. │ Frequently the lady would be seen in the restaurant but with no head.  Only│
  1725. │ from her shoulders down would appear, frightening a great many people.     │
  1726. │ Other things would happen as well, like the bells on the front door would  │
  1727. │ begin jingling frantically, as though someone was deliberately striking    │

  1733. │ there and the bells were not moving.                                       │
  1734. │ No one reported feeling very frightened by the activities of the lady.     │
  1735. │ Instead most had the feeling of annoyance.                                 │
  1736. │ The history of the house, now restaurant, is that it was built in the 1890s│
  1737. │ but the exact year is uncertain.  Sometime in the 1960s there was a fire   │
  1738. │ at the house which could never be explained.  People living next door to   │
  1739. │ the house purchased it and restored it.  Being experts in architectural    │
  1740. │ restoration helped a great deal.  Once the house was completely renovated  │
  1741. │ they leased it out to two sisters; who turned the downstairs portion into  │
  1742. │ a restaurant.  The restaurant is called Victorian Facades.                 │
  1743. │ The ghost is believed to be that of a woman named Lydia who once lived up- │
  1744. │ stairs in the house.  She never married and lived there through a great    │
  1745. │ number of personal tragedies, including the death of her only sister.      │
  1746. │ A great many people have seen the ghostly lady.  Even more have seen things│
  1747. │ fly through the air by unseen hands.  There have been some investigations  │
  1748. │ but nothing can be found to prove the psychic impressions.  Every psychic  │
  1749. │ who has entered the place has the feeling that someone was murdered.  No   │
  1750. │ evidence can be found to this.  The restaurant is located at: 1244 South-  │
