  3. If you haven't done so already, be sure to read README.1ST. 
  4.  
  5. The installation procedure copies the following programs to your
  6. hard disk: 
  7.  
  8. ApiSpy and MGWalk -- two utilities for developers that let you
  9. explore API calls and display information about the heap. 
  10.  
  11. BizWiz Financial Calculator and M-B-A-nalyst -- Use your HP-12C
  12. skills online in Windows with BizWiz Financial Calculator, or use
  13. M-B-A-nalyst for algebraic and scientific calculation. 
  14.  
  15. Castle of the Winds -- For dungeoning fans and Windows game-
  16. players alike, Castle of the Winds remains my pick for Best Windows
  17. Game Ever Created. 
  18.  
  19. CCIZip -- The CCIZip shell lets you compress, decompress and view
  20. program archives without having to exit Windows. CCIZip works with
  21. all popular archiving programs 
  22.  
  23. Destroyer for Windows -- Battleship was never this good! Watch the
  24. shells streaking across your screen and animation when you hit one
  25. of the computer's ships. 
  26.  
  27. File Commander -- One of two great programs from Wilson WindowWare
  28. on these disks. File Commander lets you edit your .INI files, zip
  29. and unzip files, and create scripts. 
  30.  
  31. Fish! -- Fish! is the premiere screen saver. It turns your computer
  32. into an animated aquarium. 
  33.  
  34. Fleurons -- An outstanding and unusual font, Fleurons is found in
  35. the FONTS subdirectory. 
  36.  
  37. Mah Jongg for Windows -- Take pairs of tiles off the board until
  38. all the tiles are gone or you can't move anymore. Be sure to try
  39. out the different tile sets! 
  40.  
  41. MicroLink -- Every Windows user needs a good communications
  42. program, and this is it! 
  43.  
  44. Plug-In for Program Manager -- Plug-In improves on the Windows
  45. Program Manager, giving you extended capabilities such as changing
  46. your cursor, assigning individual folder icons and displaying
  47. system information.

  49. Reminder -- The second program from Wilson WindowWare, Reminder for
  50. Windows is a very good day-planning utility. 
  51.  
  52. Scan for Windows -- Scan for Windows is the benchmark for all virus
  53. detection programs.

  55. Sidebar Lite -- Sidebar Lite is a first-rate alternative to the
  56. Program Manager's menus. 
  57.  
  58. Warheads for Windows -- For guilty fun in the style of the classic
  59. "Missile Command" arcade game, defend your cities against 
  60. incoming nuclear missiles. 
  61.  
  62. Whiskers -- Expand your mouse's capability to perform keystrokes
  63. and launch macros. 
  64.  
  65. Whoop It Up! -- Now you can assign sounds to system events in
  66. Windows.

  68. World Empire II--Conquering the world is definitely an enjoyable
  69. way to spend an evening. Wrestle the computer to stake your claim
  70. as unconditional world leader.

  72. NOTE: Some of the programs need to be installed after the
  73. installation program has copied them from the Windows Shareware 500
  74. disks. These programs are

  78.    -Reminder for Windows 
  79.    -Scan for Windows

  81. To install each of these programs, double-click on the icon in the
  82. Windows Shareware 500 program group. The program's installation
  83. program will step you through the installation process. 
  84.  
  85. To install the Fleurons font, start the Windows Control Panel then
  86. click on the Fonts option and follow the instructions for adding
  87. a font. The Fleurons font is copied to the FONTS subdirectory. 
  88.  
  89. FINAL COMMENT: There are lots of really wonderful programs that I
  90. wanted to include with this book, but I just didn't have room
  91. enough on the disks. There's only so much you can squeeze into
  92. three high-density disks, darn it! However, all of the programs in
  93. the book appear in the Ventana Press Windows 500 Library (keyword:
  94. WIN500) on America Online. The America Online disk included with
  95. this book gives you 10 free hours on America Online, plenty of time
  96. to download dozens of great programs. If you don't want to continue
  97. with America Online, you can always cancel after your 10 free
  98. hours, but I'm betting you'll like it enough to stay. For more
  99. information about how to install the America Online software,
  100. please refer to the enclosed America Online starter disk and to
  101. Appendix B of The Windows Shareware 500.
