Before you connect, verify that the telephone line is analog (if you can't find an analog voice line, find a fax machine and use its line).

Warning

Do not connect your modem to a digital telephone line. Modems are designed for use only with analog telephone lines; connecting to a digital telephone line may damage the modem (this is particularly true for older PC card modems).

If your location requires that you dial 9 to get an outside line, make sure you've configured dialing properties to do this.

Some telephone systems may be slow to provide a dial tone after the modem connects and thus may not be ready when the HPC starts dialing the number. If you suspect this problem, select Wait for Dial Tone before Dialing on the Call Options tab when setting modem configuration.

If your international call is being canceled before it goes through, the modem may not be allowing enough time for the dialing process. If you suspect this problem, clear Cancel the call if not connected within on the Call Options tab when setting modem configuration (if you don't want to disable this option, increase the number of seconds allowed).

If you are using a PC card modem, make sure the card is firmly seated and the card switch is in the locked position.
