  18.   Select which operating mode your file server
  19.  will use.
  20.  Select "Dedicated" if you will use the machine
  21.  as a file server only.
  22.  Select "Nondedicated" if you will use the
  23.  machine as both a file server and workstation.
  24.  Default: Dedicated  
  25.  The following screens explain each mode.

  27.   A dedicated server performs better and is
  28.  more reliable than a nondedicated server. It
  29.  cannot function as a workstation.
  30.  Use a dedicated server to run VAPs (such as 
  31.  the Macintosh VAP) in the server.
  32.  Memory requirements: At least 2.5MB of RAM
  33.  (more if you attach disks larger than 70MB). 
  34.  To boot a dedicated file server, boot from a
  35.  cold boot loader or run the NetWare operating
  36.  system file (NET$OS.EXE) from DOS.

  38.   A nondedicated server can run concurrently as
  39.  a workstation. 
  40.  IMPORTANT: If an application causes the
  41.  machine to crash while in workstation mode, it
  42.  brings down the whole network.
  43.  Memory requirements: At least 2.5MB of RAM
  44.  (more if you attach disks larger than 70MB). 
  45.  To boot a nondedicated server, run the NetWare
  46.  operating system file (NET$OS.EXE) from DOS.

  48.  Nondedicated servers don't perform as well
  49.      as dedicated servers (the processor is
  50.      shared between server and workstation
  51.      functions).
  52.  Nondedicated servers leave less memory for
  53.      programs when in workstation mode.
  54.  VAPs don't function as well as in a
  55.      dedicated server.
  56.  Nondedicated servers require more memory
  57.      than dedicated servers for the same
  58.      configuration.

  60.   The server name must be 2 to 45 characters
  61.  long. 
  62.  Valid characters: all alphanumeric
  63.  characters (A-Z, 0-9) and underlines (_).
  64.  The first character cannot be a period. Use
  65.  an underline between words. 
  66.  Servers on a network must have unique names.
  67.  To enter a new name, highlight this field;
  68.  then enter the name.

  71.  <Enter>.
  72.  If the driver you want isn't listed, press 
  73.  <Insert>. You will be instructed on how to
  74.  add a driver from a diskette.

  76.  contact the maker of your network board for
  77.  the correct driver file.
  78.  If your network includes Macintosh machines,
  79.  you may need to specify a driver with 
  80.  AppleTalk (listed as "w/AT1" or "w/AT2").

  103.   Communication buffers temporarily hold
  104.  information arriving from network stations.
  105.  Each buffer uses about 1/2KB of server memory.
  106.  To free memory, decrease the number of
  107.  buffers.
  108.  To change the number, highlight this field,
  109.  then enter the new number.
  110.  Default: 150 (the default should be enough) 
  111.  Maximum: 1000
  112.  Minimum: 40

  114.   Press Y for Yes if you are running INSTALL on
  115.  the machine that will be your file server.
  116.  Press N for No if you are running INSTALL on a
  117.  machine other than the one that will be your
  118.  file server.
  119.  If you choose No, the operating system will be
  120.  generated and linked; however, you must
  121.  complete the remainder of INSTALL at the
  122.  server.

  124.   To finish the installation on the file server,
  125.  complete the rest of this screen, exit, then
  126.  enter the second half of INSTALL (type
  127.  INSTALL -L at the DOS prompt of the server).

  130.  INSTALL options.
  131.  Nondedicated Network Address       Help 1 of 1
  132.   You must assign the server a nondedicated
  133.  network address if your server operates in 
  134.  nondedicated mode.
  135.  This identifies the machine when it is in 
  136.  workstation mode.
  137.  The address is a unique hexadecimal number
  138.  used to identify the nondedicated mode
  139.  address.
  140.  Each address must be unique; you can't have
  141.  duplicate addresses.

  143.   The summary screen shows default settings for
  144.  your operating system configuration. 
  145.  To change any information, highlight a field,
  146.  then press <Enter>. You can then enter the 
  147.  correct information.

  153.   Operating system mode
  154.      Shows which mode your operating system
  155.      will use (dedicated or nondedicated). If
  156.      you use nondedicated, you must assign
  157.      a nondedicated network address.

  160.      nondedicated server (appears only if you
  161.      select nondedicated mode).

  198.      corresponds to your network board

  222.      Shows the configuration option that 
  223.      corresponds to your hard disk controller.
  224.      This number is often set by the
  225.      manufacturer.

  228.  for your network board driver.
  229.  Highlight the option that corresponds to your
  230.  board settings, then press <Enter>. 
  231.  If the option isn't listed or if it conflicts
  232.  with other settings (indicated by an asterisk
  233.  by the option number), you may need to change
  234.  the settings on the board to match an
  235.  available option.

  237.   Change the network address if it is
  238.  incorrect. 
  239.  The network address is a hexadecimal number
  240.  (up to 8 digits long) used by the network
  241.  board driver to identify the cabling system
  242.  attached to the driver's network board.
  243.  Each network board attached to the same
  244.  cabling system must be set to a unique node
  245.  (board) address. (Many are set by the
  246.  manufacturer.)

  309.      Use this option to modify an existing
  310.      NetWare v2.2 system.
  311.      The Operating System Generation portion
  312.      of INSTALL can be run from a workstation
  313.      or file server.
  314.      The File Server Definition portion can
  315.      be modified only on the file server.
  316.      INSTALL will relink and reconfigure your
  317.      system to reflect the changes.

  319.   Upgrade from NetWare v2.x
  320.      Use this option to upgrade your server
  321.      from previous versions of NetWare v2.0a
  322.      through v2.15c.
  323.      Do not use this option on NetWare v2.0 or
  324.      v3.x servers.
  325.      This option will not destroy data on the
  326.      server's hard disk.

  329.   To select a disk driver for this channel,
  330.  highlight the driver, then press <Enter>.
  331.  If the disk driver you want isn't listed,
  332.  press <Insert>. You will be instructed on how
  333.  to add a driver from a diskette.

  335.  listed, contact the manufacturer of your disk
  336.  controller or HBA for the correct driver file.

  358.  HBAs, you may want to distribute the printing
  359.  services to a dedicated NetWare print server
  360.  machine rather than use core printing
