  1.             Convert PCDOCS 4.2 database to SoftSolutions 4.x.

  5. Conversion Steps:
  6.  
  7. 1. Install SoftSolutions with an empty dataset.  The dataset should not be 
  8. modified after it is installed (other than the "Control" File).
  9.  
  10. 2. Make sure the "default path" in PCDOCS is correct.  The "default path" 
  11. field is converted to the SoftSolutions Control file field called "Loc" 
  12. (ie., location).  The "Loc" field is the bases for the document location for 
  13. each Profile.  An example of how the "default path" field might look is as
  14. follows: \dms\%a
  15.  
  16. 3. Write down the following:
  17.      .    The SoftSolutions datapath. (The path to the SoftSolutions data 
  18.           directory followed by a colon and then the data set ID.)
  19.      .    The directory that contains the PCDOCS 4.2 database files.
  20.      .    The directory and file name of the SoftSolutions strings file 
  21.           (eg., f:\softsol\prog\softsol.ctx).
  22.      .    The name you want for the log file (eg., ssdocs.log).
  23.  
  24. 4. Type the following and press enter:
  25.      brequest /d:4096 /r:32
  26.      This will start the BTRIEVE requestor.
  27.  
  28. 5. At a DOS prompt, type the conversion programs' file name with the appropriate 
  29. switches.
  30.         Required Switches:
  31.                 /data           Points to a SoftSolutions dataset (append a 
  32.                                 ":" and the dataset id).
  33.                 /docsdata       Points to the PCDOCS data directory
  34.                 /string         Points to softsol.ctx
  35.                 /logfile        Name of your conversion log file.
  36.  
  37.         Optional Switches:
  38.                 /onLine         This switch tells SoftSolutions which files
  39.                                 are considered "on-line archive" documents.
  40.                                 NOTE 5 below discusses this switch in detail.
  41.                 /splitData      This switch allows you to convert from PCDOCS
  42.                                 in to several SoftSolutions datasets.  In other
  43.                                 words, you can split a PCDOCS database into 
  44.                                 more than one dataset.  See NOTE 6 below for 
  45.                                 more details.
  46.                 /restart        This switch allows you to quit the conversion 
  47.                                 before it is done and restart it later where 
  48.                                 you left off.  No parameters are needed--ssdocscv.exe
  49.                                 will detect where you left off.  This switch will 
  50.                                 ONLY take effect if you had quit the conversion 
  51.                                 either during the Profiles or Versions conversion 
  52.                                 (these two take 95% of the conversion time).  
  53.                                 It is not recommended to use the /restart switch if 
  54.                                 the reason you are restarting is because your server
  55.                                 crashed.  /restart can be used with the /splitData
  56.                                 switch (e.g., you are restarting a split).  
  57.                                 ONLY USE THIS SWITCH IF YOU HAVE CONVERTED
  58.                                 SOME PROFILES OR ALL PROFILES WITH SOME VERSIONS.  
  59.                                 THIS IS BECAUSE OTHER FILES ARE SKIPPED DURING 
  60.                                 THE CONVERSION WHEN /restart IS USED.  THOSE 
  61.                                 "SKIPPED" FILES ARE NEEDED WHEN CONVERTING A 
  62.                                 DATASET FOR THE FIRST TIME.
  63.                 /damagedIndex   This parameter is used when the PCDOCS indices are
  64.                                 damaged (specifically Profiles and Versions).  When 
  65.                                 /damagedIndex is used then this conversion utility 
  66.                                 will not use any index but will read sequentially 
  67.                                 through the database.  The limitation of using this 
  68.                                 switch is that the /restart and /splitData switches 
  69.                                 can not be used.  If you need to use the /splitData 
  70.                                 or /restart options and your PCDOCS indices are 
  71.                                 damaged then you must reconstruct the PCDOCS 
  72.                                 indices first.
  73.  
  74.      An example would be.
  75.      ssdocscv.exe /data=d:\Softsol\data:softsol /docsdata=i:\dms
  76. /string=c:\Softsol\prog\softsol.ctx /logfile=Docscon.log
  77.  
  78.      The first 4 switches are required.  The conversion will not work
  79.      without them.
  80.  
  81. The following is a list of files that are converted:
  82. 1. Control
  83. 2. Applications
  84. 3. Document Types
  85. 4. Users
  86. 5. Profiles
  87. 6. Versions
  88.  
  89.  
  90. NOTE 1: Profile numbers are preserved during the conversion.
  91.  
  92. NOTE 2: Make sure that the PC you are running the conversion on has 550k or
  93. better free conventional memory before starting.
  94.  
  95. NOTE 3: If your command line is longer than the 128 character DOS limitation,
  96. you can put your command line in a response file (or configuration file).
  97. Your commandline would look like this: 
  98.         ssdocscv.exe ^ssdocs.cfg
  99. The "^" in front of the file name is required.  The response file is a text
  100. file containing all of the switches listed above.
  101.  
  102. NOTE 4: There is a number stored with each PCDOCS profile card that specifies
  103. where the document was archived.  This number is translated into the 
  104. SoftSolutions format (eg. ARC00001) during the conversion.  If, for example, 
  105. your PCDOCS archive number was 36 then the "Archive Set" in SoftSolutions 
  106. would be ARC00036.  The Control File in SoftSolutions is also updated with 
  107. the highest number from PCDOCS plus 1.  For example, if the highest archive 
  108. number in PCDOCS was 36 then the Control file would say ARC00037.
  109.  
  110. NOTE 5: For PCDOCS users who are using the Online Archive feature you can use
  111. the /online switch to specify which documents are online.  Telling SoftSolutions  
  112. which files are "Online Archive" will denote each of those Profiles as Archived 
  113. which means the Profile will be automatically changed in the following ways: 
  114. a) The Status field will be changed to Archive.
  115. b) The last Opened date will be copied to the Archive date field. 
  116. c) The last segment from the location field will be copied in to the Archive 
  117. location (see the additional information screen). 
  118. d) The Profile's location field will be changed to point to where the 
  119. document will reside if the Profile/document is Restored.
  120.  
  121. You must make some changes:
  122. a) The "OAMResto" application record must then be changed manually BY YOU to 
  123. point to the online archive location so that restorations can be made by an
  124. end user.  
  125. b) The file name expected by the SoftSolutions restore routine is 
  126. "Profile#.Version#" (e.g., 149.1).  You must either change all of these 
  127. "Online Archive" documents to have this naming convention or you would have 
  128. to put the restore process in a batch file and translate the file names.
  129.  
  130. The usage for the online switch is as follows: if I had all of my 
  131. online documents on server "ARCHIVE" (and I am using the server volume name 
  132. in the document location field) then I would add to the conversion command 
  133. line "/online=archive".
  134. There is an optional parameter you may use with the /online switch.  This
  135. parameter tells the conversion program where the "Online Archive" documents
  136. will be restored to.  The way to use this optional switch is to append a 
  137. comma (e.g., ",") and the name of the fileserver/volume name
  138. that you would like the "Online Archive" documents restored to.  For example,
  139. if my "normal" documents are kept on fileserver/volume "DOCS/SYS" then I 
  140. would add to the conversion command line "/online=archive,docs/sys:".  Let 
  141. me give another example of how this works: If my online archive path starts 
  142. with "F:\SOFTSOL\DOCS" then I would have "/online=f:\softsol\docs" or,  
  143. optionaly, you could have "/online=f:\softsol\docs,h:".  The optional value
  144. (or parameter) after the "," will not only be placed at the begining of 
  145. each "Online Archive" Profile's location field but will also be placed at
  146. the begining of the control file's "Loc" field.
  147.  
  148. When the /online switch is used then "Online Archive:" displays at the bottom
  149. of the conversion screen.
  150.  
  151. If you have online archive documents in PCDOCS but you don't use the /online 
  152. switch then the document is not considered "Archived" by SoftSolutions and 
  153. thus when a user opens one of these documents they would be editing the 
  154. document in the online location.
  155.  
  156. NOTE 6: If you wish to split your PCDOCS dataset into mutliple SoftSolutions 
  157. datasets then an optional switch called "splitData" can be use.  The reasons      
  158. for using this switch are as follows: a) Your conversion takes much less time.  
  159. By taking the first 200,000 PCDOCS profiles, you can startup another conversion
  160. which will convert from 200,001 to 400,000.  If you had 400,000 profiles then
  161. the conversion would, theoretically take half the time.  b) SoftSolutions is 
  162. much more managable when the dataset has 200,000 or fewer Profiles.

  164. This switch only affects the Profiles and Versions files.  All other files
  165. (Control, Users, DocTypes, and Applicat) will be converted as usual.
  166.  
  167. The syntax for the splitData switch is as follows: /splitData=<FROM #>,<TO #>
  168. The from number can be any number from 0 to 99,999,999 (or a "-" which means 
  169. to start from the beginning of the database).  The TO number is any number 
  170. from 1 to 99,999,999 (or a "-" which means to go to the end of the database).

  172. The following is an example of how this switch could be used when converting 
  173. a PCDOCS database of 400,000 Profiles in to two SoftSolutions datasets 
  174. (using two PCs for the conversion):
  175.         First Dataset:  /splitData=0,200000
  176.         Second Dataset: /splitData=200001,400000
