  3. From 1921 Baghdad has been the capital of Iraq and is placed on the north side of the river Tigris. The city is the center of both traffic and trade in Iraq. Baghdad was founded in 960 A.C. but was later conquered by the Turks, who occupied the city from 1638-1917.
