- The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and
- Digital Equipment Corporation will be presenting a live satelite
- videoconference on the coming POSIX standard and the impact of its
- development. Jim Isaak, POSIX Strategy Director for DEC; Roger
- Martin, Manager of the Software Engineering Group for NIST; and
- Karen Sheaffer, Senior Member of the Technical Staff for Sandia
- National Labs, will be presenting this three-hour seminar. There
- is a live question and answer session during which viewers can call
- their questions in live to the presenters.

- OVERVIEW
- Delivering Open Systems Portability - POSIX
-
- The US Government, the European Commission, and a wide range of
- private corporations have established policies of utilizing open
- system technology as the basis for future use of information
- systems. For all of these groups, POSIX is the cornerstone
- standard.

- With the rapid advances in computer technology from the laptop to
- the datacenter, open systems offer one of the few paths to moving
- forward with technology, without having to re-engineer networks or
- applications, or re-train personnel. Open systems offer the
- promise of interoperability, portability of applications, of data,
- and of trained personnel.

- Some users equate open systems with a form of communication, others
- to specific brand name systems like MS-DOS or UNIX, and others to
- specific standards like OSI or POSIX. However, as this
- videoconference will clarify, it is the combination of standards,
- augmented by technical management discipline that is needed to make
- an open system work. It is critical viewing for engineers, computer
- scientists and technical managers dependent upon open system
- portability, systems and application procurement, and applications
- developers responsible for portable applications software. Some
- knowledge in programming or programming management will be helpful.
- The viewer should understand the role of programming languages,
- operating systems and databases in supporting applications
- software.

- Jim is POSIX Strategy Director for Digital Equipment Corp.; Chair
- of the IEEE TCOS Standards Subcommittee and Convener of the ISO/IEC
- JTC1/SC22/WG15 (POSIX) Working Group.

- Jim is the POSIX Strategy Director at Digital Equipment
- Corporation, working in the Corporate Standards Consortia group.
- He chairs the IEEE POSIX standards efforts involved with operating
- system interface standards, and is the convener for his work at the
- international level. Jim is also involved in international
- standards for application portability and has previously served on
- the X/Open Board of Directors.

- Prior to his work at Digital, Jim worked for Charles River Data
- Systems, Data General, Intel, Calma, and IBM over the last 20
- years. Jim has received the Outstanding Contributions Award from
- the IEEE Computer Society "for outstanding technical achievement in
- the development of the POSIX Standard (P1003), and the Certificate
- of Appreciation from IEEE Computer Society TCOS "for contribution
- to the formation, growth and adoption of the IEEE P1003.1
- Standard."

- Jim is a graduate of Stanford University, with an MSEE-Computer
- Engineering degree. He is a Senior Member of IEEE, as well as a
- member of the IEEE Computer Society, and ACM. Jim has published a
- number of papers and articles, and given presentations throughout
- the world on open system standards efforts.

- Roger J. Martin, National Institute of Standards and Technology
- (NIST)
-
- Roger is the Manager of the Software Engineering Group of NIST
- Computer Systems Laboratory, responsible for the NIST Applications
- Portability Profile and Open Systems Environment Program. He is
- also responsible for the development of Federal Information
- Processing Standards and guidelines on software engineering.

- Previously, Roger was with the Executive Office of the President
- where he managed the development and evolution of the office of
- Management and Budget's (OMB) Budget Status System.

- He has received both the Department of Commerce Silver Medal Award,
- and the IAC/IRM (Interagency Committee on Information Resources
- Management) Award for Technical Excellence. He also received the
- IEEE/Computer Society Meritorious Service Award for "outstanding
- technical achievement in establishing conformance testing for the
- POSIX standards in the USA and internationally," and the IEEE Board
- Standards Medallion for "establishing POSIX Test Methods as
- standards and in practice on a world-wide basis."

- Karen L. Sheaffer, Sandia National Laboratories
-
- Karen is a Senior Member of the Technical Staff at Sandia National
- Laboratories, Livermore, California. For the past eight years she
- has worked in the supercomputing arena on both vector and massively
- parallel platforms. She is the founder and chair of the POSIX
- 1003.10 Supercomputing Working Group and POSIX 1003.15 POSIX Batch
- Extensions Working Group, whose purpose is to provide application
- and user portability in a supercomputing environment. Karen has
- also served as Vice President and President of the Cray Research
- Incorporated's User Group.
