- My opinion (which is mine, but as chair I do have a little influence :-) )
- is that dynamic linking could be within scope of POSIX.1. (It might
- take a PAR change, but I would personally read the current PAR to allow
- it if it came from "outside" POSIX.1 originally.)
-
- However, frequent readers of this group will be quite aware of the frequency
- of flames about "invention" being done by standards bodies. Dynamic
- linking definitely falls into that category.
-
- Of course we also get flamed for not "inventing" things. Such is life.
-
- In any case, dynamic linking is probably a useful area to start work on
- development of several models so it can be determined what works well and
- what doesn't. (Again, remember the flames we get for inventing something
- without trying it, and many of them have much more obvious solutions than
- dynamic linking.)
-
- If someone were to come forward with a proposal that had a pretty high
- level of consensus, and which was feasable to implement on a broad
- range of machines, specifically including those with non-traditional
- architectures (i.e. not like VAXes)), then I'm sure POSIX.1 would
- consider it, and determine if consensus on doing it can be reached amongst
- the participants.
-
- However, if YOU want dynamic linking (or anything else), it's YOUR job to
- make it happen. The meetings are open (but not free, unhappily...
- Sugar Daddies may apply at any time.)
