- The Open Software Foundation (OSF) is the body that produces the Motif
- window manager and is in the process of producing the OSF/1 operating
- system, which will be used as a basis for future Unix(tm)-like operating
- systems by DEC, HP, IBM and a number of other vendors. OSF also produces
- a Distributed Communications Environment (DCE) and Distributed Management
- Environment (DME). These are software products for intersystem communications
- and file system sharing (DCE) and security and system/network management (DME).
- Finally, OSF produces the Application Neutral Distrribution Format technology,
- a product aimed at allowing software to be developed on one architecture
- and moved WITHOUT recompiling to another architecture. (Yes, this
- does work today, on about four or five platforms.) (Note that the
- term "product" could probably be argued. I mean a package of
- software and documentation, delivered to those OSF members who
- choose to license it.)
-
- The US Chapter of DECUS, the Digital Equipment Corporation Users' Society,
- has been a member of OSF since its inception. We have two dedicated
- representatives who serve on the End User Steering Committee as well as
- various technical Special Interest Groups. This activity, to date,
- has been under the DECUS standards committee. In order to save money,
- the standards committee's executive body has elected to drop DECUS'
- membership in OSF. (If you are a DECUS member or DEC user this means
- YOUR representation.) The reason is cost. OSF dues are currently
- $5,000 per year to a nonprofit organization. (We're trying to get
- those reduced.) We also spend money travelling to meetings, though
- a fair amount of those costs turn out to be borne by the rep's or
- their companies instead of DECUS.
-
- That brings us to THE QUESTION.......
-
- Should DECUS-US drop out of OSF? Do DECUS members want a voice in
- what happens to Motif, OSF/1, etc. or should we expect the
- various vendors we buy from, including others besides DEC, to
- properly represent our interests as end users? I've posted
- this note to A LOT of groups. How about directing follow ups
- to comp.org.decus. I'll track them and ship a response in to the
- DECUS hierarchy.
-
- Thanks,
