  28. This workshop is the fifth in a continuing semi-annual series on
  29. the NIST APPLICATIONS PORTABILITY PROFILE (APP).  OPEN SYSTEMS
  30. ENVIRONMENT has been added to the title as that is the goal of
  31. the APP endeavors, and helps define the work going on within NIST
  32. in this area.  The APP defines a common set of standards and is
  33. designed to address the broad functional areas of applications
  34. portability.
  35.  
  36. These APP Users' Forums are designed to provide users and
  37. providers with the opportunity to get information about, and
  38. provide feedback on, NIST proposals regarding the adoption and
  39. evaluation of an integrated set of standards to support the APP
  40. and Open Systems.
  41.  
  42. As currently defined the APP identifies seven functional areas:
  43.  
  44.      1)   operating system services;
  45.      2)   program services;
  46.      3)   data management services;
  47.      4)   data interchange services;
  48.      5)   user interface services;
  49.      6)   graphics services; and
  50.      7)   network services.
  51.  
  52. This workshop will provide a status report on standards and
  53. activities in the APP, OSE, IEEE, and JTC1 (international
  54. activities) areas, and solicit users' opinions of what priorities
  55. should be applied to future work items.  As usual, specific
  56. issues will be covered in more detail.  When possible, experts
  57. from other organizations or users' groups may present their
  58. particular viewpoint on given issues.
  59.  
  60. While the APP Users' Forums are intended primarily to address
  61. users' concerns, both users and vendors/integrators are
  62. encouraged to attend.
