  1. This is the first article in Volume 17 of comp.std.unix.
  2. These volumes are purely for administrative convenience.
  3. Feel free to continue any previous discussion or start new ones.

  5. The USENET newsgroup comp.std.unix is also known as the mailing list
  6. std-unix@uunet.uu.net.  It is for discussions of standards related
  7. to the UNIX operating system, particularly of IEEE P1003, or POSIX,
  8. including IEEE 1003.1, 1003.2, etc.  Other related subjects include
  9. but are not limited to ISO/IEC SC22 WG15 (the ISO and IEC version
  10. of POSIX), X/Open and their X/Open Portability Guide (XPG),
  11. the Open Software Foundation (OSF), UNIX International (UI),
  12. the AT&T System V Interface Definition (SVID), System V Release 3,
  13. System V Release 4, 4.2BSD, 4.3BSD, 4.4BSD, Ninth Edition UNIX,
  14. the UniForum Technical Committee, the USENIX Standards Watchdog
  15. Committee, the X3.159 C Standard by the ANSI X3.159 committee and
  16. the corresponding ISO committee, and other language standards.

  18. The moderator is John S. Quarterman, who is also the institutional
  19. representative of the USENIX Association to IEEE P1003.

  24. The mailing list is distributed on the Internet, UUCP, and elsewhere.
  25. There is a redistribution list on BITNET for BITNET, EARN, and NetNorth.
  26. Please send submissions from those networks to std-unix@uunet.uu.net
  27. nonetheless, because messages sent to the BITNET LISTSERV will not reach
  28. the whole list.

  30. If you have access to USENET, it is better (more efficient, cheaper,
  31. less effort for me to manage) to subscribe to the newsgroup comp.std.unix
  32. than to the mailing list.  Submissions should still go to the above
  33. addresses, although many (perhaps most) USENET hosts will forward
  34. attempts to post directly to the newsgroup to the moderator.

  36. The hostname cs.utexas.edu may be used in place of uunet or uunet.uu.net.
  37. Postings from the moderator may also originate from longway.tic.com.
  38.  
  39. Permission to post to the newsgroup is assumed for mail to std-unix.
  40. Permission to post is not assumed for mail to std-unix-request,
  41. unless explicitly granted in the mail.  Mail to my personal addresses
  42. will be treated like mail to std-unix-request if it obviously refers
  43. to the newsgroup.

  45. Finally, remember that any remarks by any committee member (especially
  46. including me) in this newsgroup do not represent any position (including
  47. any draft, proposed or actual, of a standard) of the committee as a
  48. whole or of any subcommittee unless explicitly stated otherwise
  49. in such remarks.
