- [Note to moderator: I don't know whether this applies to this
- group or not, but I just found out about this and thought I
- would send it to your group. I have separately posted it
- to comp.std.misc, comp.periphs, and comp.misc. Should
- this go to comp.unix.wizards, too? ]
-
- [ I generally try to avoid crosspostings involving comp.std.unix,
- because followups often end up going to only some of the groups
- involved, and if replies come in from the std-unix mailing list
- I have to remember to cross post them. However, an announcement
- of a new standards committee seems appropriate for this newsgroup.
-
- Any readers of comp.unix.wizards who are interested will probably
- be reading comp.periphs or comp.std.unix, so there should be no
- need to post to comp.unix.wizards. -mod ]

- Press Release for Inaugural Meeting of X3B11.1 31 March 1989
-
- New Technical Committee Formed
- To Develop Optical Disk Volume and File Structure Standards
-
- Washington, DC
-
- The ANSI Accredited Standards Committee X3, Information Processing
- Systems, has created a new task group, X3B11.1, to develop optical
- disk volume and file structure standards. X3B11.1 is responsible
- for U.S.A. positions and contributions on corresponding efforts
- in ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee 1/Subcommittee 15
-
- The standards created by X3B11.1 will facilitate the interchange
- of information on removable optical disk by specifying the format
- of the recorded structures that contain descriptive information
- about volumes and the files/directories recorded on the media.
-
- The program of work of X3B11.1 is to:
-
- 1) Specify volume and file structure standards for removable
- optical disk used in interchange.
-
- 2) Specify such standards so that they are independent, where
- possible, of the unrecorded and recorded format standards
- for the underlying media.
-
- 3) Specify such standards so that they are a coherent family
- of standards.
-
- 4) Assume the maintenance responsibility for the optical disk
- volume and file structure standards prepared by X3.
-
- 5) Establish and maintain liaison with other standards organizations
- in order to present proposals to them and to make comments
- on their proposals.
-
- 6) Represent U.S.A. on ISO/IEC JTC1 SC15.
-
-
- The first meeting of X3B11.1 will be held at the Holiday Inn of
- Nashua, New Hampshire on 27-29 June 1989.
