  1. This is the latest in a series of similar mod.std.unix articles.  The
  2. information previously posted in one article has been broken into two:
  3. one about user groups and publications, the other about standards (this one).
  4. This posting clears up some problems with the IEEE 1003.1 Trial Use Standard
  5. ordering information.

  18. The IEEE P1003 Portable Operating System for Computer Environments Committee
  19. is sometimes known colloquially as the UNIX Standards Committee.
  20. They have recently produced the 1003.1 "POSIX" Trial Use Standard.

  25.     UNIX Operating System documentation to support application

  43. The Trial Use Standard will be available for comments for a period
  44. such as a year.  The current target for a Full Use Standard is Fall 1987.
  45. IEEE has initiated the process to have the 1003.1 effort brought into
  46. the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) arena.

  81. There are two Institutional Representatives to P1003:  John Quarterman
  82. from USENIX and Heinz Lycklama from /usr/group.  As the one from USENIX,
  83. one of my functions is to get comments from the USENIX membership and
  84. the general public to the committee.  One of the ways I try to do that
  85. is by moderating this newsgroup (currently known as mod.std.unix,
  86. eventually as comp.std.unix).  An article related to this one will
  87. appear in the September/October 1986 ;login: (The USENIX Association
  88. Newsletter).  I'm also currently on the USENIX Board of Directors.

  91. contains a report by Heinz Lycklama on the /usr/group Technical Committee
  92. working groups which met in February 1986 on the areas of Networking,

  207. Volume 1 is essentially equivalent to the whole previous SVID;

  219. a document intended to promote the writing of portable facilities.
