  2.                     CHARACTER TRANSLATION FOR YOUR PRINTER

  5.     Suppose you have drawn a box on your screen like the   ┌─────────────┐

  7.     your file.  If your printer is not able to print the   │             │
  8.     characters which make up the box, you may end up with  │             │
  9.     a box on your printed sheet that looks like the one    │             │

  43.     To set up your Translation Table you must enter the "Modify Defaults"
  44.     Panel and select the "Character Translation Table" option by tabbing
  45.     to that field and then pressing the F10 key.

  49.     You can always return to your edit screen by pressing Esc once or
  50.     twice and answering No to the question "Do you want to save..."

  53.     Okay, take a look.  You get to the Modify Defaults panel by pressing
  54.     F8 and then F2.  Just look at the table and escape back to here.

  61.     You may have noticed that there was a symbol highlighted under the
  62.     '' character and a period under the '·' character.  (The symbol under
  63.     the '' will appear any time you want to replace a character to be
  64.     sent to your printer with a space.)

  66.     The '' is the "Hard-Space" marker which will be translated into a
  67.     normal space before being sent to the printer, and the '·' is the
  68.     "Soft-Period" marker which will be translated into a normal period
  69.     before being sent to the printer.

  72.     In general, to read the table:
  73.     (1) Any character with no highlighted character beneath it will be
  74.         sent to the printer with no modification.
  75.  
  76.     (2) Any highlighted character will be sent to the printer instead of
  77.         the unhighlighted character above it.

  81.     To cause a capital 'A' to be sent to your printer every time a small
  82.     'a' is encountered in a file being printed, you must move the cursor
  83.     in the Translation Table to the 'a' character and then press F10.

  85.     In the new display panel of characters, move the cursor to the
  86.     character 'A' and press F10.  If you do this, you will see that a
  87.     highlighted 'A' will appear under the unhighlighted character 'a'.
  88.     Try it.

  90.     (In both panels you may use the Enter, End, Home, ... keys.)

  92.     (Remember, F8/F2 gets you to the Modify Defaults panel.  Tab to the
  93.     Print Character Replacement option and press F10.  The Esc key will
  94.     get you back to here.)

  96.     If you now printed a file within PC-TYPE+, every 'a' in the file would
  97.     be sent to your printer as an 'A'.

  104.     The change you just made to the Printer Translation Table will not be
  105.     permanent until you exercise the "Save Defaults" option under F8 or
  106.     answer 'Y' to the question "Save Modifications" when exiting the
  107.     Modify Defaults panel.

  109.     We suggest you go back and change the translation back to normal.
  110.     If you do, notice that the highlighted 'A' disappears.
