G/NET CABLING
CHOOSING A CABLE TYPE FOR THE G/NET LAN
Gateway supplies RG-59/U 75ohm LOW LOSS coaxial cable with their starter kits.
When you buy additional cable to use in the G/NET LAN, it must be the
correct type. The wrong kind of cable could seriously impair G/NET
performance.
Although G/NET uses RG-59/U 75ohm as a default, the LNIM may be
configured to accept RG-58/U or RG-62A/U as an alternative. The type of
cable is selected by configuring STR1 on the LNIM.
Cables of different impedance cannot be intermixed on the same LAN.
RG-59/U CABLING
Recommended RG-59/U type cables are; Belden #9274, 9243, 9291, 9242; or
Columbia #5780 or equivalent. Standard RG-59 coaxial cable will not perform as
well as the above cables (RG-59/U refers to an industry standard specification
for a particular size of 75 ohm cable).
The following chart includes loss characteristics and other properties of an
example RG-59/U cable:
Nominal
Nominal Nominal Nominal Nominal Attenuation
O.D. Imp.% Vel.of Cap. Per 100 Ft
(inches) (ohms) Prop. PF/FT MHz DB

NOTE 1: RG-62A/U (93 ohm) coaxial cable (commonly used in IBM 3270
installations) may be used instead of RG-59/U. The RG-62A/U cannot be
intermixed with RG-59/U.
NOTE 2: RG-58/U (50 ohm) coaxial cable (commonly used in Ethernet
installations) may be used instead of RG-59/U or RG-62A/U providing you have
a Revision 05 LNIM. RG-58/U cannot be intermixed with RG-59/U or RG-62A/U.
NOTE 3: The Wang RG-59 dual-coax cable (model 420-0057, style 20063) has
been tested successfully on G/NET. This is actually two 75 ohm cables in a
single jacket, allowing a much tidier office network configuration. An example
configuration might have a length of Wang cable connected on one end to two
bulkhead receptacles in a wall-plate, and connected to the PC BNC Tee adapter
(see below) by two Amphenol right angle female-male BNC adapters (p/n 31-009,
Mil Spec UG306/U). Because the Wang cable is 75ohm impedance, it
may be mixed with the RG-59/U cables described above.
