  8. The following information applies to Microsoft MS-DOS(R) versions 5.0,
  9. 5.0 Upgrade, 6.0, and 6.0 Upgrade.

  15. This Application Note discusses the symptoms associated with the IBM
  16. PS/1 failing after MS-DOS is installed, the cause of this problem, and
  17. how to correct this behavior. This information applies to MS-DOS
  18. versions 5.0 and 6.0, MS-DOS 5 Upgrade, and MS-DOS 6 Upgrade.

  20. Symptom

  23. The IBM PS/1 stops running after MS-DOS is installed.
  24.  
  25. Cause
  26. -----
  27.  
  28. By default, the IBM PS/1 uses system files located on a read-only
  29. memory (ROM) chip. The Setup program for MS-DOS installs MS-DOS files
  30. on either a floppy or a hard disk. Therefore, before installing 
  31. MS-DOS, you have to change your default startup procedure so that it 
  32. uses the system files on the Setup disk instead of those on the ROM 
  33. chip.

  35. Solution
  36. --------

  38. Use the following procedure to reinstall MS-DOS:
  39.  
  40.  1. Press and hold down both mouse buttons.
  41.     
  42.  2. Start your PS/1. The computer displays the System menu.
  43.     
  44.  3. From the System menu, choose the Your Software icon. A group of
  45.     folders appears.
  46.     
  47.  4. Choose the DOS folder. A list of files in your DOS folder appears.
  48.     
  49.  5. Double-click the CUSTOMIZ file. The How System Starts screen
  50.     appears.
  51.     
  52.  6. Use the DOWN ARROW key to select the Try Diskette First, Then Try
  53.     Fixed Disk option.
  54.     
  55.  7. Press the SPACEBAR to choose the option.
  56.     
  57.  8. Use the DOWN ARROW key to select the Read CONFIG.SYS option.
  58.     
  59.  9. Use the RIGHT ARROW key to select the From Disk option.
  60.     
  61. 10. Press the SPACEBAR to choose the option.
  62.     
  63. 11. Use the DOWN ARROW key to select the Read AUTOEXEC.BAT option.

  65. 12. Use the RIGHT ARROW key to select the From Disk option.
  66.     
  67. 13. Press the SPACEBAR to choose the option.
  68.     
  69. 14. Press ENTER to save the system startup changes.
  70.     
  71. 15. Restart your computer by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL, and run the Setup
  72.     program for MS-DOS again.
