====================================================================== Microsoft(R) Product Support Services Application Note (Text File) PD0476: IBM(R) PS/1(R) FAILS AFTER MS-DOS IS INSTALLED ====================================================================== Revision Date: 4/93 No Disk Included The following information applies to Microsoft MS-DOS(R) versions 5.0, 5.0 Upgrade, 6.0, and 6.0 Upgrade. Introduction ------------ This Application Note discusses the symptoms associated with the IBM PS/1 failing after MS-DOS is installed, the cause of this problem, and how to correct this behavior. This information applies to MS-DOS versions 5.0 and 6.0, MS-DOS 5 Upgrade, and MS-DOS 6 Upgrade. Symptom ------- The IBM PS/1 stops running after MS-DOS is installed. Cause ----- By default, the IBM PS/1 uses system files located on a read-only memory (ROM) chip. The Setup program for MS-DOS installs MS-DOS files on either a floppy or a hard disk. Therefore, before installing MS-DOS, you have to change your default startup procedure so that it uses the system files on the Setup disk instead of those on the ROM chip. Solution -------- Use the following procedure to reinstall MS-DOS: 1. Press and hold down both mouse buttons. 2. Start your PS/1. The computer displays the System menu. 3. From the System menu, choose the Your Software icon. A group of folders appears. 4. Choose the DOS folder. A list of files in your DOS folder appears. 5. Double-click the CUSTOMIZ file. The How System Starts screen appears. 6. Use the DOWN ARROW key to select the Try Diskette First, Then Try Fixed Disk option. 7. Press the SPACEBAR to choose the option. 8. Use the DOWN ARROW key to select the Read CONFIG.SYS option. 9. Use the RIGHT ARROW key to select the From Disk option. 10. Press the SPACEBAR to choose the option. 11. Use the DOWN ARROW key to select the Read AUTOEXEC.BAT option. 12. Use the RIGHT ARROW key to select the From Disk option. 13. Press the SPACEBAR to choose the option. 14. Press ENTER to save the system startup changes. 15. Restart your computer by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL, and run the Setup program for MS-DOS again. If this procedure does not work, call IBM Product Support Services for assistance.
