  1. BURIAL ALLOWANCE 
  2.  
  3.     a. Service-connected Death Burial Allowance.  If a veteran dies
  4.     as a result of a service-connected disability, an amount not
  5.     to exceed $1500 may be paid toward the veteran's funeral and
  6.     burial expense including the cost of transporting the body for
  7.     burial in a national cemetery. 
  8.  
  9.     b.Non-service Connected Death Burial Allowance.  If a        
  10.  veteran's death is not service-connected, an amount not to    
  11. exceed $300 may be paid towards the veteran's funeral and    
  12. burial expenses including the cost of transporting the body to   
  13.  the place of burial.  Claim must be filed within two years    
  14. after permanent burial or cremation, which is an option the VA   
  15.  recognizes for payment of burial benefits. 
  16.     
  17.     Entitlement is subject to the following conditions: 
  18.  
  19.      1. at the time of death the veteran was in receipt of pension 
  20.         or compensation (or but for the receipt of military      
  21.         retirement pay would have been in receipt of compensation); 
  22.    or 
  23.  
  24.      2. the veteran has an original or reopened claim for either 
  25.         pension or compensation pending at the time of the       
  26.  veteran's death 
  27.  
  28.    c.Death While Properly Hospitalized.  If a person dies from   
  29.      non-service connected causes while properly hospitalized by
  30. the      VA, there is payable an allowance not to exceed $300 for
  31. the      actual cost of the person's funeral and burial and an   
  32.   additional amount for transportation of the body to the of     
  33. burial.  Payment is also made if a veteran dies while a     
  34. patient in a nursing home under VA contract. 
  35.  
  36.    d.Provision is also made for the payment of a $300 burial 
  37.     allowance for unclaimed bodies of wartime veterans for deaths
  38.     occurring after Sept. 30, 1982 (this relates to indigent    
  39. veterans)

  42. PLOT ALLOWANCE:  A $150 allowance is payable to any veteran who 
  43. is eligible for a burial allowance, who was discharged from 
  44. active service for a disability incurred in or aggravated in line
  45. of duty, or who is a veteran of any war and is not buried in a 
  46. national cemetery.
