NG2TRH.EXE converts three Norton Guides files to
Tom Rettig's HELP format, so you can read the Turbo-C,
Microsoft-C, and Clipper files with Tom Rettig's HELP.
************************** DESCRIPTION *****************************
Tom Rettig's HELP works with your editor or word-processor, at the
command prompt in interpreters, and even over data-entry screens in
compiled applications. Touch a key and a window instantly pops up
with everything you want to know about any software command,
function, operator, keyword, or symbol.
Three components make up the TRHELP system: "Data Files" contain
compressed information about a programming language or software.
You use the "Reader" to quickly access Data Files no matter what
software you are using. The "Data File Maker" lets you create your
own Data Files or modify existing ones.
Intuitive menus make everyone an instant expert, and speedy hot-keys
let the power-user bypass all menus. The Reader never gets in your
way: it works the way you think instead of making you think about
how it works.
Powerful five-way search lets you find any entry by its name,
functional category, grammatical type, see-also pointer, or detail
text fragment. Functional and grammatical groupings let you view at
a glance all language features belonging to a group, and quickly
select the one right for your immediate needs.
Four versatile output options let you write syntax structures and
valuable source code examples directly into your editor while you're
programming. Or leave a temporary image on your screen and
return to using your editor. Or make a hard copy on any printer.
This pop-up Reader, TRHNG.EXE, is "tied" specifically to the three
Data Files converted by NG2TRH from the Norton Guides for Turbo-C,
Microsoft-C, and Clipper. It is a completely full implementation of
our commercial Reader, TRHELP.EXE, except that it reads ONLY these
converted Data Files and we give it away as "freeware." Our
commercial Reader reads all Data Files including those that we write
and publish for the latest versions of FoxPro, FoxBASE+, dBASE IV,
dBASE III PLUS, Clipper, Quicksilver, and dBXL.
We also publish a Data File Maker that allows you to make your own
TRHELP Data Files and convert Norton Guides files to source text
that you can modify. The Data File Maker is available from your
software dealer or directly from Tom Rettig Associates.
************************* INSTALLATION *****************************
The complete TRHELP system is contained in one file, TRH4NG.EXE.
It is a self-decompressing file that contains this NG2TRH.DOC plus
two TRHELP files.
Make the directory in which you keep your Norton Guides files the
active default directory. Insert the TRHELP diskette in drive A:,
and type A:TRH4NG at the DOS prompt. For example:
C:\NG> a:trh4ng
The two TRHELP files require 160K of disk space when decompressed.
- TRHNG.EXE is the pop-up Reader file that reads the
converted Norton Guides Data Files.
- NG2TRH.EXE is the conversion program that makes the TRHELP
Data Files from the Norton Guides databases.
***************************** USAGE ********************************
Before you can use the TRHNG Reader, you must make the TRHELP
Data Files that the Reader uses by running NG2TRH.EXE from DOS.
Note that NG2TRH requires available disk space about 2.2 times the
size of the Norton Guides file for temporary and final output files.
The resulting <guide name>.TRH file will be about 10% bigger than
the Norton guide file because we add information. For example, if
the .NG file is 500,000 bytes, you need about 1,100,000 bytes free,
half of which is used to store the output .TRH Data File, and half
of which is used for temporary working space and then released.
You can set a DOS environmental variable "TMP" to use another drive
for temporary files. For example, to put all temporary files in the
root directory on drive D:, type this at the DOS prompt before
executing NG2TRH.EXE:
SET TMP=D:\
Once the .TRH Data File is made, it and TRHNG.EXE are the
only two files you need in order to use Tom Rettig's HELP.
To start the Reader, type TRHNG at the DOS prompt. If you use no
options, TRHNG will be memory resident.
All documentation, including what you are reading now, is available
from the Reader's Help menu. Once activated, press F1 and read the
entries on the Help menu. The Reader does quite a lot, and you will
find everything fully described in the Help entries. For example,
the entry called "Start" has complete information on starting up,
optional parameters, and memory usage.
