MEGAPUPS
The dog racing handicapping program
INTRODUCTION
====================
MEGAPUPS runs on the Foxbase database program. Foxbase requires
that your computer be configured with FILES=20 and BUFFERS=20 in the
CONFIG.SYS file used by the computer when it first boots up. If you
do not have a CONFIG.SYS file in your root directory, use the one
that is provided with MEGAPUPS. It will configure your computer to
reflect the needed FILES & BUFFERS changes. To do this, you will
have to copy the CONFIG.SYS file onto your root directory. Use the
following commands.
Floppy disk users:
===================
Place disk #1 of MEGAPUPS in drive B and your boot disk in
drive A. Enter the following commands followed by a return.
A:
COPY B:CONFIG.SYS
It should look like this. A>COPY B:CONFIG.SYS
Hit enter
(When you have completed this, reboot your computer)
Hard disk users:
==================
Place disk #1 of Megapups in drive A. Enter the following
commands followed by a return.
C:
cd\
COPY A:CONFIG.SYS
It should look like this. C>COPY A:CONFIG.SYS
Hit return
(When you have completed this, reboot your computer)
Megapups requires 576K of RAM. A hard disk is preferred, but it
will run on two floppy disk drives. A 8Mhz clock time is preferred.
A 4mhz clock will run a little slow but keep in mind - the program
is processing a huge volume of data!
GETTING STARTED - This is an archived disk & it must be un-archived
Place the original disk in drive A and do the following:
=========================
Floppy disk users - have three formatted floppy disks ready
=================
Enter the following: UNARC B: Then hit enter
The computer will automatically un-archive the disk in its
proper sequence onto three floppy disks.
Hard disk users
================
Enter the following: UNARC C: or UNARC D: or UNARC E:
or UNARC F: Depending on which hard disk you wish to
un-archive too. Next hit enter. The program will
automatically make a new directory on the designated drive
and un-archive the program.
STARTING THE PROGRAM
====================
Floppy disk users
=================
Place disk #1 in drive A and disk #3 in drive B.
Enter MEGAPUPS
When the menu screen comes up, remove disk #3 from drive B and
replace it with disk #2. THIS STEP IS IMPORTANT AT THIS TIME.
Hard disk users
===============
Change to the drive where you placed MEGAPUPS. For example:
enter C:
Then enter the following:
CD\MEGAPUPS
It should look like this C>CD\MEGAPUPS
Next: Hit enter
Next: enter MEGAPUPS
Next: Hit enter
This will start the program. The Foxbase runtime screen appears and
then the leading presentation screen for MEGAPUPS. Then the
copyright screen appears. Press any key to advance screens.
The copyright screen appears first, then main menu. It looks like
screen on the next page.

SELECTION A
===========
This program mode allows for the addition, deletion and modifica-
tion of the individual dog's history. It also includes the addition
of individual races run by each dog, and should be updated as each
race is run by each dog. This will keep the records current and
allows the best possible selection process and race calculation.
SELECTION B
===========
This program mode allows for the actual race setup. The program will
establish race results using the statistics entered for each dog and
the biases that you have placed on each statistic using selection D.
SELECTION C
===========
This program mode allows you to setup for a color monitor, assign
the data drive, and establish the classes of dogs. The classes are
currently setup for A,B,C,D,DD, and Maiden. You may charge these
any way that you choose.
SELECTION D
===========
This program mode establishes the biases that you, as a handicapper,
see as the most important to the least important. These biases are
then reflected in the performance of each dog for the calculated
race.
SELECTION Q
===========
This selection ends the program and returns the user to the DOS
level.

The lower line represents commands that are available from the
prompt line.
Ret - Retrieve - This will retrieve a dog that is currently in the
file by its name or partial name.
Beg - Beginning- Goes to the beginning of the database file.
End - - Goes to the last entry in the file
Next- - Goes to the next entry in the file
Prev- Previous - Goes to the previous entry
Stat Add - Adds a new statistic and already existing file.
This will drop the last one out the bottom if
necessary to make room for the new one.
Modify - Allows modification of the current record
Add - Adds a new dog into the file
Del - Delete - Deletes the current record from the file
Tally - Counts the number of records in the file
Help - Displays a help screen
Quit - Returns the user to the main menu
The program's screen form is normally updated and new entries added
directly from the racing form. The original entries take the most
time, but the updates using the Stat Add function are easy. Be sure
that all information is entered correctly. The race results are a
direct reflection of the accuracy of your entries, and how you
established the biases on the statistics screen (option D).
We've made the additions and modifications so as the number pad can
be used for most of the entries. When the field is filled it jumps
to the next field so be careful about striking the entry key.

Up - Moves the prompt line up to the previous position
Retrieve - Retrieves a dog by it's full or partial name
Help - Brings up the help screen
Fix - Fixes the selected dog into the current pole position
Next - Moves the database to the next dog in the file
Previous - Moves the database to the previous dog in the file
Quit - Returns the user to the main menu.
Please note that on 4mhz machines, the FIX selection may perform
slowly. Don't get impatient. The computer has to do a lot of figuring
to come up with the proper selections. The time to compute increases
as the selection gets closer to the ninth slot.
The positions depicted are the finish positions. These are determined
by the statistics you put in for each dog and how you have set the
biases on the statistics screen (Option D)

The race grades are currently set as for A, B, C, DD, D, and Maiden.
These can be changed to suit the particular grading at the track you
visit. The configuration is also set for no color and the data storage is
in drive C.
You may change any of these parameters. THIS IS PROGRAM IS A MUST WHEN
STARTING THE PROGRAM FOR THE FIRST TIME. After the initial selections are
made, there is no further need to use this program, unless you change your
computer system, or move to a different track.

╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
Greyhound's age percentage:
The race brackets are for evaluating the experience and age of the dog.
If you feel that this has no effect, enter 100 for each of the catagor-
ies. Otherwise, grade each age bracket as a percentage of 100 as we
have done in the initial setup.
Race grade weighting:
The race grade is averaged for all the races that the dog has run in
the history. Set the percentage as to how you feel this experience
effect the overall performance of the dog.
The remaining values should add up to 100. The biases are run as
follows:
Pole position, Break position, 1st call, 2nd call and finish. The
preference is from 1 to 9 if you enter a positive number, and 9 to 1 if
you enter a negative number. For example:
On the Pole Position, entering 5 will give a weighting of 5% and the
finish of the race, if no other factors were considered, shows up as
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. Entering a -5 reverses the finish, if no other
factor were considered. If you feel being in position 1 is an ad-
vantage, enter a positive number. If you feel position 9
has the advantage, enter a negative number. If you feel it doesn't
matter, enter 0
The same can work for running time, time ahead, or being behind. But I
can't see where entering a negative number here would be of any
benefit.
The Dog's weight, using a positive number, favors the heavier dog. A
negative number would indicate that you feel the lighter dog has the
advantage.
This program is shareware. Your continued use of it requires registra-
tion with the author. The un-registered program holds 150 dog's
history. The registered program has the capacity for over 1 million
dogs. That of course is dependent upon the capacity of your hard disk.
