SOIL CLASSIFICATION V2.00
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
This program is for the classification of soil per ASTM D 2487-85
and/or AASHTO M145-73 and gives you a print out that can be part of
your project calcs or submittal to Building Officials. Based on your
input of percent of material passing various sieves, liquid limit,
plastic limit, and diameter at which various percents are smaller, the
program will determine classification of the soil sample. The output
will show your input, percents retained on various sieves,
miscelanious info and classification of soil.
MACHINE REQUIREMENTS:
Computer:
This program is for a IBM or IBM compatible (XT or AT) machine
that has 93K of free memory. A hard drive is not required but is nice
to have (loads program faster and gets file info faster). At least
one 5 1/4" floppy disc drive (360 Kb or 1.2 Mb) is required for
running program, making back-up copies or hard disc installation. A
Numeric co-processor is not required but program will use it if
present and run faster. The monitor can be either color or mono.
Mouse, Joystick or Track-ball not required or used by program. Other
miscellaneous requirements, such as chair (Lazy-Boy or hardback),
liquids (water or soda), music (classical or rock), snacks (carrot
sticks or candy), atmosphere (home or office), etc., are at the
discretion of the user.
NOTE: A floppy disc is that flat square thing in a black jacket (not
leather) that is in a paper envelope. A hard disc is that thing-a-ma-
bob that is inside your computer that you never see.
Printer:
Most 80 or more column dot matrix printers will work with this
program if they support line drawing characters or IBM character mode.
If the chart on cover sheet of this document is made with lines, then
your printer should be acceptable. If chart does not have horiz. &
vert. lines (just rows of letters), then you need to change dip
switches on your printer (see your printer manual) or get a different
printer.
The use of printer cover, printer buffer, green bar paper, blue
bar paper, color ribbon, etc. is at the discretion of the user. We
have found that blank paper and black ribbon are best to use.
We were not able to try program with Daisy Wheel or Laser
printers. Try or use at your discretion.

SOIL CLASSIFICATION V2.00
SOFTWARE NEEDS AND FILES ON PROGRAM DISC:
The program disc has the following files on it that are needed or
help running of program.
GO.BAT TESTPRT.BAT MANUAL.BAT
GO.TXT TESTPRT.TXT SOIL.DOC (this document)
SOIL.EXE SOILNAME.TXT INVOICE
The GO.BAT file will clears screen and displays text in GO.TXT
file. The GO.TXT file contains information for first time users on
testing printer, printing this document and starting SOIL program.
The MANUAL.BAT file will clear screen, display message about
printing this document (SOIL.DOC) and print this document (if you have
printer on).
The TESTPRT.BAT file will clear screen, display message about
doing a printer test and then print the TESTPRT.TXT file (if you have
printer on).
SOIL.EXE file is the SOIL CLASSIFICATION PROGRAM and SOILNAME.TXT
file contains names used for soil classification. These two files
work togeather and must be in same directory.
INVOICE is text file with an invoice for registration. Do
COPY INVOICE >PRN or PRINT INVOICE for printed copy of file.
Your CONFIG.SYS file should look something like the following lines.
FILES = 20
BUFFERS = 10
DEVICE = ANSI.SYS
ANSI.SYS is a standard DOS file that comes with your operating system.
The ANSI.SYS file and DEVICE = ANSI.SYS line in CONFIG.SYS file
are needed by program to function properly. If these items are not
present, program will run but some of the features (like clear screen
or back up one question) will not function.
If DEVICE = ANSI.SYS is not in your CONFIG.SYS file, you can use
your favorite text editor to add the line. You should also have a
copy of ANSI.SYS file in your root directory. See your DOS manual if
you need more info on CONFIG.SYS and ANSI.SYS.
BACK-UP COPY:
It is a good idea to have a back-up disk in case of problems. If
you are installing to hard disk, this program disk is your back-up.
If your using floppy disk drive, you should make copy of this disk for
daily use and keep original as back-up. See Copying to another floppy
disk for info on how to make disk copy.
-2-
SOIL CLASSIFICATION V2.00
COPYING TO ANOTHER FLOPPY DISK:
When making a copy, please copy entire contents of disk using
DISKCOPY program that comes with your operating system (see your DOS
operating manual if needed). Steps are as follows.
NOTE: SOURCE disk is original disk (360 KB) and TARGET disk (360 KB)
is disk that you are putting copy on. If TARGET disk is not
formatted, DISKCOPY will format it before it makes copy.
1.a. One floppy drive (A:) - Put DOS disk in drive A:, at A: prompt
type DISKCOPY A: A: and push Enter key. Remove DOS disk and go to
step 2.
1.b. Two floppy drives (A: & B:) - Put DOS disk in drive A:, at A:
prompt type DISKCOPY A: B: and push Enter key. Remove DOS disk and go
to step 2.
1.c. Hard disk drive & floppy drive (C: & A:) - At C: prompt type
DISKCOPY A: A: and push Enter key. Go to step 2.
2. Follow instructions on screen of DISKCOPY program.
COPYING TO HARD DISK:
Most hard disks are drive C (C:). If your drive letter is
something else, use it in place of C in following steps.
1. Go to root directory. At C:> prompt type CD \ and push Enter key.
2.a. If you allready have a directory that you want to put SOIL files
in, change to that directory. At C:> prompt type CD directory name
and push Enter key. Check that there are no other files with the
names SOIL.EXE & SOILNAME.TXT in that directory. Type DIR SOIL*.* and
push Enter key. If file names not found, go to step 4 below. If file
names are found, you can go to step 4 and over-write old files with
new files or do steps 1. and 2.b. to put files in new directory.
2.b. If you don't have directory for SOIL files, make new directory to
put files in. I would suggest a directory name of SOIL, SOILCLAS, SC
or ENGR, but if you want you could call it ANYNAME. At C:> prompt
type MD SOIL (or MD ANYNAME) and push Enter key.
3. Go to new directory. At C:> prompt type CD SOIL (or CD ANYNAME)
and push Enter key.
4. Copy SOIL.EXE & SOILNAME.TXT files to directory. Put original SOIL
program disk in in drive A:. At C:> prompt type COPY A:SOIL.EXE and
push Enter key. When prompt returns, type COPY A:SOILNAME.TXT and
push Enter key. Both files should now be on your hard disk.
The SOIL CLASSIFICATION program should now be installed on your
hard disk. To run program, get in SOIL (or ANYNAME) directory. At
C:> prompt type CD \SOIL (or ANYNAME) and push Enter key. Then at C:>
prompt type SOIL and push Enter key.

SOIL CLASSIFICATION V2.00
SPECIAL KEY USED BY PROGRAM:
The program uses a special key that it sets up when program
starts and re-sets to normal when program ends.
F1 key - This key is the back-up one question key. When pushed, the
program will display the previous question. Continued pushing of F1
key will continue back-up process till you reach first question of
input.
NOTE: The F1 back-up key only works if it is the first key-stroke of a
new question. If you press a key and then press F1, the program will
end your input and go to next question or display a error message and
ask question again.
FORM OF INPUT QUESTION:
The form of the input question is to display the question,
display the old or previous input and have blinking cursor waiting for
response. Below is example of how question would look on screen.
Input Question: = Last Value = New Value
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Percent passing #200 sieve .......... (xx.xx) = 36 = _
REPEAT INPUT:
To repeat or reuse input value from last run (Last Value) for
current run, just push Enter key. If value is different, enter new
value and push Enter key. Most of the questions have repeat input
capabilities. When you first start the program up, it will use input
from pre-defined starting values built into program.
INPUT EDITS:
The program will edit your input to see if its reasonable. It
will check the number that you input to see if it is within the
allowable range that the computer will accept. Example - Dia. at
which 10% is finer has range of 0.003 to 50.0 - If your input is
greater or equal to 0.003 and is less or equal to 50.0, then program
will accept input. If not, computer will beep and display acceptable
range of input and ask question again. Text input (such as Project
Name, Project Number, etc.) can not be edited.
Most questions need a numeric input. If you press a wrong key or
a letter key for input and press Enter key, computer will beep and
display comment and ask question again.
INPUT ERRORS:
Typo error - If you push wrong key during input, use back-space key to
move cursor backwards and retype input.
Wrong input and Enter was pushed - If you input a value and push Enter
and then realize it is wrong, push F1 key to back-up one question and
re-do input.

SOIL CLASSIFICATION V2.00
INPUT ITEMS & TERMS USED BY SOIL CLASSIFICATION PROGRAM:
Before starting to do a computer run, you will need to determine
needed input for running of program. Below is list of input items
program will ask for. Limits and diameters questions will be asked
only if needed. I would suggest making some written notes on input
before running program (it may save you time and errors).
INPUT ITEMS:
Project Number
Project Name
Sample Number or ID code
Method - ASTM, AASHTO or both
Percents of test sample passing #200, #40, #10, #4, 0.50", 0.75",
1.00" and 2.00" sieves.
Cobbles (Yes or No)
Boulders (Yes or No)
Liquid Limit (LL)
Liquid Limit (Ovendried)
Plastic Limit (PL)
Diameter (mm) at which 10%, 30% and 60% is finer (D10, D30 & D60).
SEE INPUT QUESTIONS ON FOLLOWING PAGES FOR MORE DETAIL ON THESE ITEMS.
TERMS:
Field Sample - The total sample as taken from the field.
Test Sample - The test sample is that portion of the field sample
that passed the 3 inch sieve.
Boulders, Cobbles, Fine, Coarse, Gravel, Sand and Etc. - See next page
for breakdown.
Plasticity Index (PI) = Liquid Limit (LL)-Plastic Limit (PL)
Organic - If Liquid Limit (Ovendried)/Liquid Limit is less than 0.75,
then sample is organic.
"A" Line - The equation of "A" line is horizontal at PI equals 4.0
to LL equal 25.5, then PI = 0.73(LL-20). The "A" line is the
theoretical break point between Clay and Silt. Clay above and
Silt below.
"U" line - The equation of "U" line is vertical at LL equal 16.0 to PI
equal 7.0, then PI = 0.9(LL-8). The "U" line is the approximate
"upper limit" for natural soils. Test results that plot above or
to the left of "U" line should be verified.
Cu = Coefficient of Uniformity of particle-size distribution curve.
Cu = D60/D10
Cc = Coefficient of Curvature of particle-size distribution curve.
Cc = (D30)²/(D10 x D60)

COMMENTS and SUGGESTIONS:
What makes a computer program great? It is feed-back from the
users. I will be working on Version 2.xx of the program in the future
sometime and I need your comments and suggestions to help with the
changes and improvements.
Use the program for a while. Show the program to other engineers
for their comments and suggestions. Show the output to building
officials for their comments and suggestions. Give others a copy of
the shareware disk for them to try.
After you have done above, put together a list of comments and
suggestion and send it to:
