SHAREWARE MARKETING
What is shareware?
Shareware is a marketing concept in which copyrighted software
products are distributed by allowing duplication of the program
for evaluation by interested parties. The program developer
receives payment from the users after they have determined that
the product meets their needs. The motivations for making
payment for a shareware program are honest payment for a valuable
software tool, desire for support, updates, enhancements and
documentation, and finally to help encourage shareware authors to
produce additional quality programs.
Shareware Distribution
We allow, in fact encourage you to pass along a copy of this
program to any interested friends, co-workers, PC user groups,
bulletin board systems, etc. Companies who distribute shareware
programs for a fee (shareware distributors) may distribute
Brainstorm as long as they
1. Charge no more than $10 per diskette.
2. Do not include any other programs on the diskette with
Brainstorm.
3. Make no alterations to either the documentation or
program files.
What happens when I register?
Mustang Software believes that a registration of one of our
shareware products is a commitment of support from an end user.
Every registration of every Mustang Software product is followed
by an immediate acknowledgment and shipment of the latest version
of the program and documentation. Orders are shipped UPS 2nd day
air on the same day payment is received. Registered users are
placed on our mailing list and receive automatic notifications of
all updates and future product releases.
Will my registration matter?
YES! Mustang Software employs programming, technical support and
administrative staff on a FULL TIME basis. Your registration
ensures that we can continue to grow, improve our product, and be
here when you call for support. Without registrations we could
not remain in business to SERVE YOU! If Brainstorm meets your
needs as a network utility, we encourage you to support the
shareware concept by sending in your registration. See the
Registration form at the end of this documentation for details.
You may make as many copies of Brainstorm as you wish, give the
────────────────

program to anyone you wish, but you may not sell it. If you find
the program useful and you continue to use it, you must make
payment of $149.00 to Mustang Software. You may not alter,
decompile, disassemble, or reverse-engineer the Software, remove
or obscure the Mustang Software copyright and trademark notices,
or take any action which would in any way be in derogation of the
proprietary rights of Mustang Software to the program or related
materials.
In the event that you write a review or article about Brainstorm,
please forward a copy for our information. Reviews and user
input provide the basis for product improvement, and we do not
want to miss your feedback.
This program is produced by a member of the Association of
Shareware Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the
shareware principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve
a shareware-related problem with an ASP member by contacting the
member directly, ASP may be able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can
help you resolve a dispute or problem with an ASP member, but
does not provide technical support for members' products.
Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at P.O. Box 5786, Bellevue, WA

REQUIREMENTS
IBM or compatible computer
256K of memory
1 diskette drive of any kind
Monochrome or color display
Network compatible with Novell 2.0a and above, Banyan Vines 2.x
or above, or any network which supports DOS 3.x file and record
locking or the Share command
-------------------------------------------------
OVERVIEW & INSTALLATION
Welcome to the shareware version of our Topic Orientated Message
System designed for use on Local Area Networks. BRAINSTORM is a
new approach to Group Problem Solving. It is designed to
facilitate group discussions on a network by allowing users to
respond to any number of defined topics in an organized manner.
Most E-MAIL Packages which come with a network allow user "A" to
send a message to user "B", and perhaps send a carbon copy to
user "C", "D" and "E". While this type of message management is
ideal for individual communication, it falls short when the goal
is to gather feedback from a group while keeping everyone abreast
of the project status.
Brainstorm (BS) is not "user" structured, but rather "topic"
structured. Messages and replies do not even include a reference
to whom the message is addressed. The focal point of a
Brainstorm message is the SUBJECT, or in Brainstorm terminology,
the TOPIC. As users read the first message in a topic, they add
replies which start the formation of a Topic "thread". A thread
is nothing more than a continuous listing of messages WITHIN A
SINGLE TOPIC, PRESENTED IN THE ORDER THEY WERE ENTERED. During
each BS session, users are automatically prompted to read the new
messages threads in those topics selected for viewing. BS keeps
track of each user's last message read marker and allows re-
reading of old topic material if desired. As a user finishes
reading the new thread on one topic, the next selected topic
thread follows.
Brainstorm is not meant to be a replacement to your existing
EMAIL package, but rather as a supplemental program to structure
communication between your network users. Topics may include
virtually anything you might need: New ISDN Protocol; How to
rearrange the shipping dept.; Can the REDSKINS go the Super Bowl
────────────────

again?; etc. Many of our users have serious company specific
topics as well as break-time recreational items.

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
SETUP
BS fully supports File and Record locking for Network use. It
automatically functions properly with Novell 2.0a or above and
Banyan Vines 2.x and above. It also operates automatically with
any LAN that makes use of DOS 3.x file and record locking
internally. Note that networks which do not emulate the DOS
Share operation internally may require loading the Share program
before running Brainstorm (Share is included on your DOS
diskettes). Novell and Vines do not require Share. If you want
to operate the program on a non-network drive (even if the PC is
connected to a network), you'll have to run SHARE first. If
BRAINSTORM doesn't find a network it understands or the SHARE
code it will complain with a message indicating that SHARE must
be loaded first.
The first step in installation is to create a subdirectory to
contain the BS files. We will assume the subdirectory name is
BS, although it may be any valid subdirectory name. Set your
network security for this area so that users who will be involved
in Brainstorm sessions have access to read and write files. In
the event you wish to exclude a certain class of users from the
BS session, set that group of users' security to prevent them
from having any access to this area. You may establish numerous
BS directory areas with different user access and topics, and the
Brainstorm program may be started from any of these areas. These
secondary Brainstorm directories need not contain a copy of the
Brainstorm program as long as the file BS.EXE is available
through a path or map statement. Multiple Brainstorm sections
are permitted under your license agreement as long as all are
managed by the same file server.
Copy the files from the distribution disk to your newly created
BS subdirectory. To start Brainstorm, simply change to the
Brainstorm area and type BS at the DOS Prompt. Remember, if you
want to operate the program from a drive which is not located in
a network server you'll have to run SHARE first. If you are
using a monochrome monitor and you find the screen display is not
easily readable start Brainstorm with the monochrome command
option BS /M instead.

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
OPERATION
When Brainstorm is started it asks for the first name, last name,
and phone extension of the user who is logging in. Once a user
has logged in the first time this information may be included on
the startup command line in a batch procedure. The phone
extension is included to allow easy voice contact with another BS
user after reading a message, if desired. Passwords are optional
and the default BS configuration does not use passwords.
Implementation of the password feature is covered under the
MAINTENANCE section later in this manual.

The Main Topic Screen lists each topic with the date of the most
recent message, the topic name, and the name of the originator of
the topic. Upon each entry into BS, most users will simply press
[R]ead and begin reading new messages on a topic by topic basis.
The additional commands on the Main Topic Screen allow [C]reation
of a new topic, [P]rinting the contents of all messages in a
topic or group of topics, [S]election of a specific starting
topic rather than accepting the default of the oldest messages
first, [M]aintenance of the BS database, and finally [Q]uitting
the BS program.
Brainstorm features automatic, real-time screen refreshing while
the program is running. While the above screen is displayed,
Brainstorm is constantly checking to see if any new topics have
been started by other network users. As soon as a new topic is
detected, every users screen display is updated to reflect the
added information. This advanced feature allows users access to
information that is literally only seconds old!

READING MESSAGES
The [R]ead operation takes a user directly to the message read
screen for the oldest message in the first topic. Reading
continues through that topic and then begins at the oldest
message in the next topic containing unread messages. While
reading any specific message a number of choices are available.

│ [E] - Edit [ENTER] - Next Unread Message [R] - Reply │

╘════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
The above represents the message reading screen which prefaces
each message with the name of the author, the topic name, date
and time of creation, message reference number and the phone
extension of the author. If the message is the first UNREAD
message in a topic during the user's session the header also
includes the flag [NEW TOPIC] as a note that the topic has
changed.
The message text follows the header information and may contain
up to two screens of text. This message length limitation is
imposed to promote full reading of messages and is supported by
studies which indicate that the average message length in a
network is about seven lines. If the message uses more than one
screen it may be scrolled with the up and down cursor arrows and
────────────────
10
Brainstorm ver. 1.1
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
PgUp/PgDn keys. Small up and down arrow symbols located at the
upper and lower left margins indicate a message that continues
either up or down beyond the screen display.
There are several choices available to a user after reading a
message, the most common of which is to proceed to the next
unread message in that topic with the ENTER key (or to the next
topic if the current message is the last in a topic). The second
choice is to [R]eply to the message on the screen. Reply places
the user in the message editor, adds to the thread, and returns
to the message which was being read after the reply is saved. All
replies within a topic are added to the end of the topic thread
in the order they are entered. Complete information on text
entry and the Brainstorm editor will be covered under CREATING A
NEW TOPIC later in this documentation.
[P]rint message thread is the third menu choice, and further
prompts whether the text should be sent to the printer or a file.
In either case, the contents of the ALL messages in the thread
are included in the printout. This is a handy way of capturing
all messages in a topic, and results in the same output as the
[P]rint Topic Thread choice on the Main Topic Screen.
Users also have the option of reading messages in the current
thread both forward and backward using the left and right arrow
keys. Although the right arrow will present the next message,
use of the ENTER key is recommended as a method of moving to the
next unread message.
If the current message is authored by the reader the [E]dit
option is also available. The [E]dit prompt will not even appear
on the screen unless the message was authored by the user.
Editing a message returns to the original location in the thread
after the edit is completed.
Finally, [Q]uit or ESC return a user to the Main Topic Screen.
If a user quits prior to reading all new messages, any unread
messages will be presented at the next login. Reading continues
until all new messages have been read or until ESC is pressed to
exit the [R]ead function and return to the Main Topic Screen.

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
CREATE A TOPIC
Now that we have finished discussion of [R]eading messages from
the Main Topic Screen, we will review Topic Creation. [C]reate a
Topic allows adding new topics to the BS system. Any user may
initiate new topics. A description window requests the topic
name which may be any text up to 30 characters in length. After
establishing a new topic a user is placed in the BS Editor to
create the first message in the new topic. This message will be
the first one read by all users, and should help establish the
scope and purpose of the discussion. The features of the
Brainstorm editor for message creation, reply and editing are
listed below.
EDITOR FEATURES
Message entry within Brainstorm makes use of a sophisticated full
screen editor which supports IBM keyboard functions as well as
many WordStar (TM) commands. Keys include:

CTRL Q-Y delete from cursor to end of line.
CTRL T delete word to right of cursor.
CTRL W scroll display up one line.
CTRL Z scroll display down one line.
CTRL O-I toggle auto-indent on & off. In auto-indent mode
pressing <ENTER> while in insert mode will cause
the new line inserted to have the same indentation
level as the previous line. Auto-indent mode also
affects the way that text is reformatted when word
wrap occurs -- the new line will have the same
indentation level as the previous line -- and
hence the behavior of the reformatting commands
CTRL B & ALT R.
CTRL O-W Toggle word wrap on and off. When word wrap is
on, any attempt to insert or append text beyond
the right margin will cause a new line to be
inserted following the current line and all words
that are at least partially beyond the right
margin to be moved to the new line.
CTRL B reformats the current paragraph.
ALT R reformats the entire message.
CTRL Q-L restore the original contents of current line
after a deletion, while still on the line.
F10 saves a message and returns to the Topic Screen
or, if replying, to the message reading screen.
The above editing commands are active within Brainstorm during
entry of new messages, replies to existing messages as well as
when editing a message previously entered.

SELECTING A STARTING TOPIC
The [S]elect starting topic choice allows a user to override the
default order of topic selection (oldest to newest), and begin
reading at any selected topic. It rarely needs to be used except
to review old messages in a specific topic area without reading
other new responses. After pressing [S]elect a user may move the
horizontal highlight bar using the cursor keys to select a
starting topic.

and assumes a user will most often want to select a recent topic
rather than an older one. The date field reflects the date of
the newest message in the topic. Once a topic is highlighted
pressing [S] allows reading and reply to unread messages in that
topic. Keep in mind that selecting a starting topic will only
show messages in the selected topic and any more recent ones
(those ABOVE it in the listing). Unread messages in topics below
the highlight bar that remain unread will be presented again at
the next login.

PRINT A TOPIC THREAD
Users may easily obtain a hard copy printout of all messages in
multiple topic threads using this choice. A topic selection
screen identical to the [S]elect Starting Topic screen allows
easy selection of the topics to be printed. The highlight bar is
again used to select a topic to be tagged with the ENTER key.
Tagged topics are indicated by a small arrow in the left margin,
and may be untagged with a second press of ENTER.

CHANGE MAINTENANCE PASSWORD
Your password to the maintenance section of BS may be altered
from time to time as a simple security function, or may be a
necessity brought on by staff changes. As a new password is
entered there is no echo of the characters being typed. A series
of dots will show how many characters have been entered. A
second request for the password is made to confirm a change prior
to placing it in effect. THIS PASSWORD IS ENCRYPTED WITH A
32-BIT CRC CONVERSION AND CANNOT BE DETERMINED BY INSPECTION OF
THE FILES ON DISK. IF A MAINTENANCE PASSWORD IS LOST OR
FORGOTTEN IT CAN ONLY BE RECOVERED BY SENDING A COPY OF THE DATA
FILES TO US WITH A $50 RECOVERY FEE FOR INDIVIDUAL PROCESSING.
THIS SERVICE IS ONLY AVAILABLE TO REGISTERED BRAINSTORM USERS.
THE ALTERNATIVE IS TO RE-INSTALL BRAINSTORM WITH THE LOSS OF ALL
MESSAGE DATA. PLEASE REMEMBER YOU MAINTENANCE PASSWORD -- WE DO
NOT WANT YOUR $50 FOR PASSWORD RECOVERY!!

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
SYSTEM STATUS [OPEN]
By default BS is an OPEN system, meaning that any network user
who has access to the subdirectory will be able to start the
program and perform all functions, except maintenance. The
[S]ystem status option allows changing to a CLOSED system which
limits user access. If BS is CLOSED, new users will not be
allowed to access the message data through BS. Names of users
who will be allowed access to a closed BS system must be added
prior to CLOSING. These names may be added individually by the
users themselves or by an administrator prior to CLOSING the
system. If additional users are to be added, the system
administrator should OPEN the system, log in with the name and
phone extension of the new user, and then CLOSE the system.
SECURITY NOTE !!
A closed system is NOT secure. Any network user who has read
access to the subdirectory where Brainstorm resides will be able
to view the message text using the DOS type command or more
sophisticated viewing program. The actual message text wilL be
unformatted under these conditions, but easily discernable. A
CLOSED Brainstorm system simply prevents new users from joining
the BS sessions on an interactive basis.
---> IF SENSITIVE INFORMATION IS TO BE EXCHANGED IT IS THE
RESPONSIBILITY OF THE NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR TO RESTRICT
SUBDIRECTORY ACCESS TO THE PROPER INDIVIDUALS OR GROUPS.

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
TOPIC DELETION
As the number of topics in a BS system grows, some will proceed
to an eventual conclusion while others seem to continue forever.
As topics need to be purged the system administrator may want to
first create an archive of the message contents using the PRINT A
TOPIC THREAD command on the Main Topic Screen. After making a
copy of the topic information, this menu choice presents a full
screen list of all topics.

Thread screens. The date field reflects the date of the most
recent message entry in the topic. During topic deletion the
highlight bar is again used to select topics to be tagged with
the ENTER key. Tagged topics are indicated by a small arrow in
the left margin, and may be untagged with a second press of
ENTER. After tagging the topic threads to be deleted press [D]
to start the delete process.

EDIT A USER'S RECORD
This maintenance choice is used to change a user's name, phone
extension or password.

A user name may need alteration simply because it was entered
incorrectly or due to marriage or other legal events. Phone
extensions often change and may easily be corrected here. User
passwords may be altered by the system administrator, but are not
visible even in this area. This approach allows an administrator
to set a user password if it is forgotten, but prohibits covert
use of the user's name without his knowledge. User passwords are
also stored in an encrypted format which cannot be determined by
viewing the files on disk.
USER PASSWORDS [NOT REQ]
By default Brainstorm does not require users to enter or make use
of passwords for access. This may be changed to require
passwords either prior to starting BS for the first time, or at
any time after operation has begun. User's who names have
already been stored in the user database will be advised that
passwords are now required, and prompted to enter a password of
their choice. Passwords may consist of any keyboard characters
except control keys and F-Keys, and must be at least one
character in length.
Brainstorm login information may be included on the command line
for automatic operation from menu systems and batch files. All
user parameters with the exception of passwords may be included.
The syntax for command line invocation is as follows:
F:\BS > BS [FIRST LAST] [PHONE] [/M]
────────────────

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Items in brackets are optional. During a user's initial login to
BS, the PHONE item must be included for complete automated login,
but is not necessary during subsequent logins. For example, once
a user has been entered in the BS database the following line
will perform auto-login directly to the Main Topic Screen:
F:\BS > BS RICK HEMING
The monochrome switch, /M, may be included at any location on the
command line, either before or after the name and phone
information.
