CHECK BOOK directly from your shareware disc.I strongly suggest you make
a backup copy of CHECK BOOK on a second disc,in case you accidently erase
part or all of CHECK BOOK.CHECK BOOK VERSION 2.0 includes full

USING THE CHECK BOOK VERSION 1.0
CHECK BOOK Balances your checking account. You will be asked to enter
information concerning the account;and CHECK BOOK will create a balanced
account statement. This statement is written to a file and can be
saved, updated, and corrected. When using CHECK BOOK make sure you use all
CAPITOL LETTERS.Press the Caps Lock key on your keyboard.CHECK BOOK
is able to handle 485 transactions in each file. The number of files
you can make is endless.
TO BEGIN
Go to the the drive and the directory you have CHECK BOOK and type CHECK.
Example: C:\ACCOUNTS>CHECK (C:) is the drive and (\ACCOUNTS>) is the
directory where you have CHECK BOOK.Then you type CHECK and hit
the enter key.You have now started CHECK BOOK.
You should see the greeting
WELCOME TO CHECK BOOK 1.0
The first question will be
Is output file old or new?
CHECK BOOK ASKS YOU QUESTIONS
Once you begin CHECK BOOK you are asked questions. The basic idea in using
CHECK BOOK is for you to enter each transaction in your checking account
and let CHECK BOOK make you an easy to read account statement. You are
also encouraged to edit your account statement and let CHECK BOOK
recalculate all balances and totals automatically the next time you enter
a transaction. The following are descriptions of the questions CHECK BOOK
asks you and how you should answer them.
IS FILE OLD OR NEW?
Tells CHECK BOOK to either create a new file or reference an old one.If
the file is new, enter NEW.If the file already exists and you want to add
more to it,enter OLD.
FILE NAME
Is the name of the account statement you want to create or reference. When
entering file name, first enter the drive where you want it created or
where it already exists.
Example:A:MYFILE
CHECK BOOK goes to drive A and creates or references MYFILE.Your total
entry must not exceed 14 characters. If it does your file name will be
truncated. If you are creating or referencing a file in the drive and
directory you are already in,you may enter only the file name and not the
drive letter.
Example: If CHECK BOOK is in drive A.A is the drive you are working
in.If you want MYFILE to be created in or referenced from drive
A,just Enter MYFILE.
ACCOUNT NAME,ACCOUNT I.D.,AND OPENING DATE
Are information asked on new accounts.Account name need not be the same
as file name.Account I.D.may be anything up to 20 characters, usually an
account number.Opening date should be in the form: number/number/number.
BEGINNING BALANCE
The amount of money your starting with. This is information asked on a new
account.
TRANSACTION DATE
The date of the transaction you wish to enter into your account. If you
have no more transactions to be preformed and want what you have done
written to your account statement, enter WRITE.CHECK BOOK writes the new
transactions to you statement. If for some reason you want to quit without
writing anything, enter END.No action will be taken by CHECK BOOK.
TRANSACTION CODE
The check or deposit number. The first character of TRANS.CODE must be
either a D or C.This tells CHECK BOOK to either credit or debt your
account.
Example: D100 Means you will be asked how much to debt from your
account.100 stands for check number 100.
Example: C.DEP Means you will be asked how much to credit your
account.DEP could stand for deposit.
Example: D.FEE Means you will be asked how much to debt from your
account.FEE stands for fee charged by bank.
As long as the first character is either a D OR C the rest of Transaction
Code is for your reference.
In CHECK BOOK VERSION 2.0 you may also enter code letters
to tell CHECK BOOK that the check you are entering into
your checking account is a payment on a loan.CHECK BOOK
updates the loan payment file and automatically calculates
the interest and principal payed and calculates the
remaining principal.
DEBT OR CREDIT
Depending on how you entered the transaction code you are now asked to
enter the amount of debt or credit.Enter only numbers.Do not enter dollar
signs or commas.
LOOKING AT FILES
When CHECK BOOK saves your account statement to a file, you can access
that file through a word processor (not included).Treat your file as you
would any other file you would edit with your word processor. It would be
advisable to put a word prossesor in the same location (directory) that
you have CHECKBOOK:this will make for easy editing.IMPORTANT when editing
an account statement colomns that are lined up must stay lined up.You may
deleate a transaction (date, trans#,debt, credit, bal)but you may not leave
that line empty.Bring the rest of the file up one line. You may change
the value of any entry, but the new entry must line up with the rest of the
colomn.Debts, crebits, and beginning balances MUST line up on the right
side.Dates and trans# must line up on the left side.
You may also view a file without a word processor as such:
Example:C:\ACCOUNTS>TYPE MYFILE
TYPE tells the computer to type MYFILE on the
screen. You enter this command by hitting the ENTER key.
You may print a file without a word processor.First prepare your printer
as you would for any print-out.Then do as such:
Example: C>TYPE MYFILE Same as a above BUT,before you hit the ENTER
key hold down the CTRL key and hit the letter P on your
keyboard. Now release the CTRL key and hit ENTER.MYFILE will
print on your printer. After the file is printed, hold down
the CTRL key and hit the letter P on your keyboard. Now
release the CTRL key. This will stop further printing.
ERRORS
CHECK BOOK tells you when you have made an error that will not able it to
continue. Some errors are not checked by CHECK BOOK.Errors that do not
stop CHECK BOOK from doing its job, will not be detected.
FILE ERROR
This error means the file you have entered can't be opened or another
problem exists.Common mistakes are:
Example: You have declared your file as OLD:but, the file does not
exist. This will cause error message 'Error opening file: MYFILE'.You can
only update an old file if it already exists in the location you tell
CHECK BOOK to look for it.
Example: You have declared your file as NEW:but, the file does already
exist. This will cause error message 'Error opening file: MYFILE'.A file
that exists is an old file. You must declare it as OLD.
!! CHECK THAT YOU DO NOT MAKE THIS ERROR !!
You are able to go to your files for changes. For instance,if you want to
change something in MYFILE you may access it through any word processor
(NOT INCLUDED).If you alter the position of any column CHECK BOOK can no
longer read from that file.To delete a transaction, delete the whole row
and bring the rest of the file up one row.Do not leave any blank rows in
your file. When changing debts or credits, make sure the new values line
up,on the right side, with the rest of the colomn.Your file is in a
special format that CHECK BOOK can read.It must stay that way.Sides of
colomns that are in line must stay in line. When you do make changes, the
next time you run CHECK BOOK it will automatically update all balances
and totals.
FORMAT ERRORS
Format erros are usually erros in the way you have input data.If you are
supposed to enter a transaction date and you enter something that CHECK
BOOK can't read a date from, such as a word, you will be asked to re-
enter.A date must be in the form of 10\5\91.
If you have edited a file and accidently changed a numerical value to a
alphabetic value (ie..a debt of 100 dollars to a debt of10B dollars):the
next time CHECK BOOK references that file it will not be able to
understand what a debt of 10B means. You will get an error telling you
CHECK BOOK has found a non-numerical character and to go to file and
correct it.
Other errors exist and CHECK BOOK will alert you of them. The most
important thing, that I have stated before,is that when you edit an
account statement,a file, you must not alter the format in which CHECK
BOOK has written it.Any number can be changed:any transaction may be
deleted:but, you can't alter the format (the positioning) of the rest of
the account statement. Also, where numerical data is needed for CHECK BOOK
to do calculations, numerical data must be availiable. If by accident it
has been changed to non-numerical data, you will be asked to make a
correction.
REMEMBER
CHECK BOOK can only read 485 transactions in each file.Do not store
more than 485 transactions in one file.

BOOK or can't run it,first, follow all directions carefully.Reference your
