-
- What is "Netiquette"?
- Since its inception, a code of
- conduct has developed among those
- who use the Internet to regulate
- certain practices and procedures.
- This code is referred to as
- "Netiquette".
-
- Here are some tips on correct
- Netiquette practice:
-
- It's considered polite to greet and
- sign off your e-mail messages as
- you would a regular letter - though
- the tone your e-mail takes will tend
- to be more informal.
-
- If you get involved with Newsgroups
- or Chat Rooms, remember that each
- has its own culture and rules.
-
- - Watch to see what the forum is all
- about before participating, and never
- criticise a discussion when you have
- only just arrived - it probably won't
- be appreciated!
-
- - Whether using e-mail or
- participating in a forum, try not to
- type whole words in upper case. You
- will be seen to be shouting! 'Caps'
- are only used to emphasise certain
- words, such as: "HELP! I don't know
- what to do next!"
-
- What is "spam"?
- Something to watch out for on the
- Internet is "spam", the Internet's
- equivalent of junk mail.
-
- Once you're online and participating
- in forums and communities, you
- might even receive abusive e-mail. If
- this should happen to you, the best
- thing to do is to complain to the
- sender's Internet Service Provider,
- by forwarding them the offending
- message along with your comments.
- It is highly likely that the individual's
- account will be closed.
-
- In many cases, those who send
- spam hide their identities, knowing
- that they are being offensive. Should
- you receive spam from an unknown
- source, forward your complaint to M-
- Web and we will attempt to block
- future mail from that address.
-
- How is security handled on the
- Internet?
- Your most important security tool on
- the Internet is your password. Never
- give it to anyone, never share it, and
- never leave it lying around on a
- piece of paper.
-
- Microsoft Internet Explorer enables
- you to protect yourself from security
- hazards on the Internet. With it, you
- can:
- - restrict access to inappropriate
- sites if you have children or
- employees who are likely to use your
- connection to surf the Internet; and
- - prevent data being implanted on
- your computer in the form of
- "cookies" that tell a website when
- last you visited and what you looked
- at on that site.
-
- If you think someone has got hold of
- your password, contact our
- Technical Support department -
- details at the top of this page - who
- will help you change it immediately.
-
- Is there a way of monitoring
- children's access to the Internet?
- Yes. Several parental guidance
- software programs have been
- developed which you can download,
- and which allow you to block access
- to websites with sensitive or
- offensive content.
