  5. This document contains the following information:

  13. System Requirements for the Macintosh
  14.  
  15. DiscPassage requires:
  16.  
  17.     Ñ A Macintosh Plus, SE, SE/30, II (any model), Classic, LC,
  18.         or IIsi with CD-ROM drive.
  19.  
  20.     Ñ 400K of available space on your hard drive.
  21.  
  22.     Ñ System software 6.0.7 or greater, 32 Bit QuickDraw, Foreign File       
  23.       Access and ISO 9660 File Access in your System folder and driver       
  24.       software for your CD-ROM drive in your System folder. 
  25.  
  26.       For instance, if you have an AppleCD SC drive, the init is named       
  27.       "Apple CD-ROM."  
  28.  
  29.     Ñ A minimum of 2 MB of RAM (2.5 MB for System 7).
  30.  
  31.     Ñ Color images require a color monitor; they are displayed
  32.       in 640x480 resolution in 256 colors.  You need to have 32-bit
  33.       QuickDraw in your System Folder.  Images automatically convert             
  34.       to black and white for the SE, Plus, and Classic. 
  35.  
  36.     Ñ DiscPassage operates under Finder or Multi-Finder environments,
  37.       as well as System 7.

  40. Installing & Using DiscPassage
  41.  
  42. To install the DiscPassage application, insert the floppy diskette
  43. (or CD-ROM), and open the Desktop.  Drag the icon labeled "DiscPassage"
  44. to the area on your hard drive where you wish to install it.
  45.  
  46.     Ñ Launch DiscPassage by getting to the hard drive, then double             
  47.       click on its icon. 
  48.  
  49.     Ñ DiscPassage first presents you with a database selection menu
  50.       representing databases on the disc.
  51.  
  52.     Ñ Selecting a database by double-clicking will display the
  53.       contents for this database.  You can navigate the disc by            
  54.       searching or browsing from the menu bar or traversing the            
  55.       hierarchically structured contents windows. 
  56.  
  57.     Ñ An item with a folder icon to the left of the entry indicates               
  58.       that there are levels beneath this.  Individual entries which             
  59.       can be called up directly will be labeled by one of these types       
  60.       of icons:

  62.     T:             text file
  63.     Pict Icon:     image
  64.     audio speaker: audio selection

  67. Features
  68.  
  69. DiscPassage offers powerful search and retrieval features, including:
  70.  
  71.     Ñ The File menu allows you to Save text and images, Print
  72.       text or images, get comprehensive on-line Help, Eject the              
  73.       DiscPassage disc, see which Discs are available, or Quit.
  74.  
  75.     Ñ The Edit menu provides basic text editing functions including            
  76.       Cut, Copy, Paste, Clear and Select All.
  77.  
  78.     Ñ The Format menu on the main menu bar supports various operations
  79.       on text files.  Once a region of text has been highlighted, you       
  80.       can change its font, point-size, and style.  Text files are               
  81.       saved in Microsoft Word format. Format does not affect files on       
  82.       the CD.

  84.     Ñ The Related Items menu shows you the entries for images, audio,       
  85.       or text files related to the file you are viewing.
  86.   
  87.     Ñ The Search menu lets you perform on-line searching on various
  88.       indexes:  Words, Authors, Titles and Subjects.  
  89.       You may search for phrases, wild cards, proximity and combine             
  90.       search terms with the AND, OR, or NOT Boolean operators.  See              
  91.       on-line Help for more information.  Click on the Titles button             
  92.       to see the titles of the documents matching your search                  
  93.       criteria.

  95.     Ñ Browse lists every word of every document on the disc and the
  96.       number of documents that contain the word.  Click on the Titles       
  97.       button to see the titles of these documents.  You may cut and              
  98.       copy a word found in browse to the Search template, and build            
  99.       phrases this way.

  101.     Ñ The Find menu allows you to search a document for a search or            
  102.     browse term or any word or phrase you are looking for.

  105. Troubleshooting
  106.  
  107. Installation of the DiscPassage software should be easy.  Problems may
  108. arise, however, with installation of the CD-ROM unit and its drivers. 
  109. Be sure you have the proper inits in your System folder (they have to
  110. be inside the System folder or they will not get installed at system
  111. startup). 
  112.  
  113. You need to have the following:
  114.  
  115.     Ñ System Software 6.0.7 or greater, Foreign File Access and
  116.       ISO 9660 File Access inits
  117.  
  118.     Ñ An init supporting the type of CD-ROM you have, for example:
  119.       AppleCD-ROM init
  120.  
  121.     Ñ 32-bit QuickDraw 
  122.  
  123.     Ñ You should see an icon for the CD-ROM disc on the desktop. If
  124.       you don't, the system is not mounting the drive properly.  Check       
  125.       to be sure your SCSI cable is securely connected and there are             
  126.       not multiple devices assigned to the same SCSI address.  If            
  127.       trouble persists, check the SCSI termination.

  130. Some commonly encountered problems
  131.  
  132.     Ñ An Apple CD-ROM drive requires the Apple CD-ROM init
  133.       version 2.0 or greater to properly mount ISO-formatted CD-ROMs.
  134.  
  135.     Ñ If your CD-ROM disc is not mounting on the desktop
  136.       consistently, you may have an init conflict.  Be sure to only
  137.     ╩ install the init for the CD-ROM drive you are using, and hide             
  138.       the others (create a folder inside your System Folder to save            
  139.       them).
  140.  
  141.     Ñ Other inits besides drivers may conflict with your CD-ROM
  142.       inits.
  143.  
  144.     Ñ "The selected index is not available on this Disc"  You must
  145.       be in a text database to access indexes.  Some discs, as well as       
  146.       some databases, do not have indexes associated with them.
