The New Parents' Question & Answer Book
1 Year to 2 1/2 Years: Introduction
Between one year and two and a half years of age, your toddler will go
through an amazing transformation. By the end of this period, your largely
nonrational, nonverbal "baby" will have been replaced by a thinking, talking
"child" full of determination and imagination. He will still be dependent
upon you in important ways, but he also will be exhibiting a significant
degree of independence. His world will expand enormously to include many
out-of-home experiences. He will also show interest in interacting with
people outside the family, especially children his own age. Furthermore, he
will progress from a primarily reactive participant in social relationships to
an active initiator and full partner with a strong and distinct personality.
This transition will not always be smooth and easy. It is likely that you
will find your patience and stamina tested by your toddler's ever-growing
physical skills, his increasingly sophisticated mental abilities, and his more
complex emotional states. However, as long as you appreciate the changes your
toddler is going through and continue to encourage him as appropriate and
control him as necessary, your pay off will be great. Your reward will be a
competent and confident child who will be a source of pride and a challenging
but delightful companion as well.
