  30. LOCAL FIX:                                                                      
  31. Installation of OS/2 should always be done with VGA, even if                    
  32. you have an SVGA card.  IBM OS/2 support is limited to VGA                      
  33. and XGA, with the exception of Trident, Tseng, ATI,                             
  34. Headland, and Western Digital chipsets, for which OS/2 has                      
  35. designed "generic" support.  listed in the readme file. The                     
  36. only SVGA support that is provided in the shrink wrapped                        
  37. version of OS/2 is the ability to switch away from a DOS or                     
  38. OS/2 fullscreen and have the current state of your video                        
  39. card saved.. and this is only after you have turned SVGA                        
  40. ON, and if you have one of the adapters listed in the                           
  41. readme..although everyone with a Tseng, Trident, ATI,                           
  42. Headland, or Western Digital chipset should try turning                         
  43. SVGA ON at least for a while to see if it fixes any                             
  44. unseemly video problems they might be having.

  90. If you have an ATI Ultra, Vantage, or other 8514/A hardware                     
  91. compatible adapter, install OS/2 using the 8514/A driver.                       
  92. For the Graphics Ultra and Graphics Vantage change the line                     
  93. DEVICE=...VVGA.SYS to DEVICE=...VSVGA.SYS in CONFIG.SYS;                        
  94. Shutdown, reboot, and proceed with SVGA ON as described                         
  95. above.                                                                          
  96.                                                                                 
  97. Problem: C0000005 is displayed on the screen during install                     
  98.                                                                                 
  99. Resolution: The problem occurs on Western Digital PVGA1D                        
  100. video cards, but may not be limited to them.  It is                             
  101. resolved in a fixed version of BVHSVGA.DLL available from                       
  102. IBM.                                                                            
  103.                                                                                 
  104. Replace the existing BVHSVGA.DLL on the system -- in the                        
  105.  OS2 directory.  Do this by booting from the OS/2 2.0                           
  106. install diskette, insert disk #1, press ESC at the next                         
  107. prompt.  At the A: prompt place the diskette with the                           
  108. replacement file into the drive and copy this DLL into the                      
  109.  OS2 directory on the installed partition.                                      
  110.                                                                                 
  111. Problem: My install hangs on Disk 1.                                            
  112. Resolution: In many cases, PCM hardware has disk caching                        
  113. enabled on the drive controller card. The hang can often be                     
  114. fixed by disabling the on-board caching. Another suggestion                     
  115. is if the card has asynchronous memory refresh                                  
  116. capabilities, turn it off. This too may fix the problem.                        
  117.                                                                                 
  118. Problem: Hang on Disk1 right after LOGO screen                                  
  119. Resolution: Ask the customer if he has an OAK video card.                       
  120. An INT10 call is made to the BIOS which causes the problem                      
  121. on OAK cards.  You will need to patch the OS2LDR file and                       
  122. make the following changes.                                                     
  123.                                                                                 
  124. Step 1. Make a backup copy of your Install Diskette 1.  Use                     
  125.         DOS DISKCOPY if necessary.  *DO NOT* perform this                       
  126.         modification on your original OS/2 2.0 Install                          
  127.         Diskette 1.                                                             
  128.                                                                                 
  129. Step 2. Boot DOS, make sure you have DEBUG.COM on that                          
  130.         diskette or on your hard drive where you can get to                     
  131.         it.  Change to the appropriate directory if necessary.                  
  132.                                                                                 
  133. Step 3. Insert your backup copy of Install Diskette 1.  Type                    
  134.         DEBUG A: OS2LDR<enter>                                                  
  135.         at the DOS command prompt.                                              
  136.                                                                                 
  137. Step 4. To unassemble OS2LDR, enter the following command:                      
  138.         U 4F7C<enter>                                                           
  139.                                                                                 
  140. Step 5. Enter the following:                                                    
  141.         4F7C<enter>                                                             
  142.         CD.  will be displayed. You will enter                                  
  143.         90<space> and                                                           
  144.         10.  will be displayed. You will enter                                  
  145.         90<enter>                                                               
  146.                                                                                 
  147. Step 6. To write changes to the file,enter the following                        
  148.         command:  W<enter>                                                      
  149.                                                                                 
  150. Step 7. To quit debug, enter the following command:                             
  151.         Q<enter>                                                                
  152. Step 8. You should now see your DOS prompt.  Restart the                        
  153.         installation using your newly modified backup                           
  154.         Install Diskette.                                                       
  155.                                                                                 
  156.                                                                                 
  157. Problem: Successful install, but the system hangs on the                        
  158.          next reboot at the LOGO screen                                         
  159.                                                                                 
  160. Resolution: Ask the customer if he has a FUTURE DOMAIN 16XX                     
  161. SCSI controller.  The .ADD file uses interrupt driven I/O                       
  162. rather than polling which is used by DOS.  An interrupt                         
  163. conflict likely exists.  You should check all IRQ settings                      
  164. on all cards to find the conflict.                                              
  165.                                                                                 
  166. Installation locks up at start of graphical install                             
  167.                                                                                 
  168. Symptom:                                                                        
  169.   After first set of diskettes is installed and                                 
  170.   installation program warm-boots the computer, the                             
  171.   graphical install portion does not appear.  Rather the                        
  172.   machine hangs at this point.                                                  
  173. Problem:                                                                        
  174.  Video card may be in set for non standard VGA mode, or                         
  175.   autosense capability on the card not working correctly                        
  176.   for OS/2.                                                                     
  177. Resolution:                                                                     
  178.   Make sure video card is in VGA mode with auto-sense                           
  179.   turned off.                                                                   
  180.                                                                                 
  181. Problem: White screen after installation with no system                         
  182. activity                                                                        
  183. Resolution: Try setting the video card to 8 bits and moving                     
  184. the video card to an 8-bit slot and disable the                                 
  185. auto-switching capability of the card if possible.                              
  186.                                                                                 
  187. "Autoswitching" on non-IBM EGA adapters should be disabled                      
  188. (usually with a DIP switch or jumper setting).  In rare                         
  189. cases it may be necessary to switch third party                                 
  190. VGA/SuperVGA adapters into 8-bit mode.                                          
  191.                                                                                 
  192. Limitation:  The WPS will not operate with the Monochrome                       
  193. Display Adapter or the Hercules Monochrome Graphics                             
  194. Adapter.  Usually the WPS will fail to work with monochrome                     
  195. EGA.  However, some EGA adapters (e.g. Paradise Monochrome                      
  196. EGA Card, ATI EGA Wonder) will emulate all color EGA modes                      
  197. on TTL monochrome monitors and, thus, will work with the                        
  198. WPS.                                                                            
  199.                                                                                 
  200. Limitation:  Make sure adapters with on board ROMs are not                      
  201. conflicting with other adapters.  For example, many                             
  202. SuperVGA adapters use large chunks of upper memory, and                         
  203. many hard disk adapters have on board ROMs which can be                         
  204. mapped into this area as well.                                                  
  205.                                                                                 
  206. Out of Synch/Install problems                                                   
  207. Symptom:                                                                        
  208.   May vary                                                                      
  209. Problem:                                                                        
  210.   Addressing of card in 16-bit mode.                                            
  211. Resolution:                                                                     
  212.   Switch card to 8-bit mode if available.  This                                 
  213.   will probably involve setting a jumper, or dip                                
  214.   switch according to the documentation that comes                              
  215.   with the card.                                                                
  216.                                                                                 
  217. Trap E switching a DOS fullscreen to a window                                   
  218. Symptom:                                                                        
  219.   When I window a DOS fullscreen running in                                     
  220.   SVGA I often get a Trap E.  Will be prevalent                                 
  221.   on overcommited (low-memory) systems.  The PM                                 
  222.   driver you are using can also have an effect.                                 
  223. Solution:                                                                       
  224.   Get the new VSVGA.SYS.                                                        
  225.                                                                                 
  226. Installation of OS/2 halts at Blue "IBM Logo" screen                            
  227. Symptom:                                                                        
  228.   OS/2 boots up to Blue IBM Logo screen and does not                            
  229.   finish printing "INSERT DISK #1 message".  Drive                              
  230.   light continues to stay on indefinitely.                                      
  231. Problem:                                                                        
  232.   Incompatible OAK Video card.                                                  
  233. Resolution:                                                                     
  234.   1.  Temporarily use another VGA card to get OS/2                              
  235.   installed.  Should be able to place card in after                             
  236.   install completes.                                                            
  237.                                                                                 
  238.   2.  NOT VERIFIED:  This should only be tried by more                          
  239.   experienced users.                                                            
  240.      a.  Make backup copy of INSTALL disk.
